2 pointsAll I will say is that there is a reason most of us will say what we listen to most are acts like X, MM, Versailles, GazettE etc...where are the newer acts that inspire us like those ones have? But, this is largely because I feel there isn't a lot of genuine intent in it right now. Compared to having musicians that used vk as a way of self expression and adding a new dimension to the music, you mostly have standard rock bands that want to dress up because of the history of its success. I also believe the imagery has grown really homogeneous. You get people dressing exactly like more successful acts before them with no improvisation. How often do we have to see a rhythm guitarist that looks exactly like Teru? The lack of creativity is born from a place of dis-ingenuity. Visual kei has become synonymous with marketing gimmick. Of course, there was always a marketing aspect to it, but there was also a rebellious nature to it, a way of expressing one's inner self and rejecting conformity. Adults on the large seem really afraid to be this way these days. So it's quite sad! But, I believe like all things, a resurgence will come. There are people who experience the artists I enjoy for the first time now and think "This is really interesting!" For example, that youtuber who makes all those reaction videos where he experiences Japanese artists and usually really enjoys them! This has been my experience showing Japanese music to others as well. Anything that is or was a pop culture phenomenon will fade out for a bit and come back eventually in full force. Remember how vaporwave was 'ironic' at first, "haha it's so corny and 80s isn't that silly" and now so many people are creating new genres to tap into sounds and moods of the 80s and obsessing over cyberpunk themes and imagery. I don't think visual kei will be too different in the end. Let's do our best to help it grow further!

1 pointDIMLIM CAN'T GET OUT OF THE VISUAL KEI! It's one of the few really good bands on the scene these days. It's my favorite band of my whole life. I love visual kei, and I love that my favorite band is from this scene, it can't happen! I'm very sad about this new "logo type". I look at him and give me the impression that everything to come will be really bad ... I'm not even so excited for this second album. I hope to be wrong. DIMLIM is everything to me! 😞

1 pointTWOM really does sound like a mash up of several ideas. It's pieced together so poorly though with no real cohesion. Cool sounds here and there, I like the doom-metal vibes in the first third of the song and the more post-metal-y vibes in the latter third. But, this might be one of the worst songs they've released. 10 minutes of no direction and no real hooks or riffs. No offense, but next time please kindly leave your ideas at the door Kyo.

Retsu does keep posting on instagram stuff like "where do you want us to play overseas?" and such so possibly so! Tbh I'm not really surprised about them dropping the V Kei image, especially as they've always been easily able to be part of both V Kei and the more "extreme" metal scene. I've always had the impression they don't fully want to market themselves as a full on V kei band, that may sound a bit weird but they're not the kind of band who are releasing singles every month or two and take a long time between releases which keeps things higher quality. (+They're probably all trying to run part time jobs as well as doing the music) And the way they are focused on putting out albums, instead of single after single, even the way they promote themselves seems more like Dir, or any of the other bigger bands in the Japanese scene do, like they don't tend to drop so many lyric videos, sample music videos, album snippets (not in the same way most v kei bands do at least) and such. They've not had the easiest ride so far, but they've managed to recover from losing members before so aren't so worried about them coming back from this. But at the same time will not be surprised if they did decide to call it quits and focus on other projects or whatever, would be a bummer but they've made some quality stuff that'll be around forever so that's good enough for me. -

1 pointI... hate to say it but I agree that the single is boring. If I wanted something that was identical to this song in terms of length and experimentation, I’d go and listen to anything else they’ve put out in the past 10 years or so. This single was honestly probably just a Sukekiyo outtake and decided to release it as Dir en grey just for the sake of keeping the band name still relevant.

Huh, this sounds very interesting. I can imagine that being the case. And yes, I also thought most fans were into decora 😂 Oh boy, was I wrong.... I still remember people buying sex pot revenge in online shops 🤣 Seems like such a long time ago. The style of sub cultures in general is in such a decline....15 years ago there were a lot of punks and goths around, nowadays people still enjoy the music, but the stores are all closing up because people don't tend to dress to such an extreme. Ahhh, the good old 90s/early 2000s...I feel like such a grandma now. -
1 pointChedoara and Rijin are still available digitally anywhere digital music is sold. I bought mine via Amazon. Rijin is literally $1.99. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth here, but buying albums shouldn't be a radical death saving throw we don't do until things get dire.

I'm a sucker for simplistic designs, so pretty much every KEEL album cover is perfect in my opinion. Plus I love consistent designs throughout a band's oeuvre and with a couple exceptions, they've kept the + pattern consistent. -

Post your "UNPOPULAR" music opinions!
YuyoDrift reacted to GreatNorthernVK for a post in a topic
Part of this is a combination of nostalgia, selection bias, and increased access to the scene. Sure, I’ve done it too when I’ve gone through discographies of the prominent 90s and 00s bands, and thought “Wow, I don’t think the scene will ever produce classics like this again”. But then I remember that there were probably tons of cookie cutter, derivative bands back in the day that didn’t even reach the West, because no one gave a shit enough to keep and upload their discographies. Now that we have access to the entire scene by means of the internet, and social media in particular, we see all of the shit that the OG hipsters would have left behind 15+ years ago (except perhaps to mock it, see: Glam Japan). Because most of us don’t live in Japan, nor regularly attend Japanese lives, it can be hard to really gauge where these bands fit in the hierarchy of the Japanese fandom. Having access to the entire fandom now also means that we have access to all of the cringe that the fandom has to offer. How much of the observed idolfication of the scene is “new”, and how much of it is just innovating the sentiment that was already there is difficult, because most of us have no real clue of how Japanese fans acted on a daily basis in the 1990s. We can make observations on how the Western fandom has evolved, because most of us have over a decade of experience with that crowd. The only thing I’ve noticed over the years is the increasing openness to pop music, especially J-pop and K-pop. Also, a slight trend towards fixating on one band in the scene, or even one member (specifically, from the fans who also listen to K-pop). -

I never said he wasn't entitled to his opinion. I was just making a point. Of course he's entitled to think there's been an objective decline in quality, but I am entitled to disagree with him. Not every statement I make has to be either emblematic of an "inferiority complex" of which you speak or some huge manifesto about some band I like, so stop putting words in my mouth. -

Wait, everyone is entitled to their opinions except this one? Unless one cries out #allvkmatters then the breath exits the realm of acceptability and becomes free game to be called butthurt etc. ? I've always written like this with this very same tone by the way, and I like arguing with people who's education and taste I don't respect both irl and online. The only people who take other people trashing shit they like seriously enough to comment with such shite are the ones who are out there either to swipe under the rug their inferiority complex and lack of argument or white knight some shitty band that will disband in two years without a wikipedia article with the balance book of bataar. -
