his vocals were a perfect fit for avelcain. rands mostly got too ambitious for his very limited natural talent he doesn't seem keen on upgrading so most of the time he outright sucked at whatever he attempted there with a few exceptions that were basically AC redux.

vkgy latest interview, with a famous vkei writer! Also I worked hard on this one so it's a cross post with JROCKNROLL Nagasawa Tomonori (長澤智典) is a music journalist of note, having written for most major visual kei magazines and bands. We had the chance to ask him questions over several weeks, and so we explore his career, and his decades-long view of visual kei from the inside. Choose your favorite platform vkgy or jrocknroll If there are people who still have any questions about the "visual kei" history, we can do another round So if you do have any questions, throw them to me and I'll will ask them!

It's not even Halloween yet, and there's already some trickery or treating going on! A man from Nara had been arrested on October 22 on suspicion of fraud after reportedly scamming his in-laws for thousands of yen by impersonating Kyo, the frontman of Dir en grey and Sukekiyo. 39 year old Yoshikazu Kasahara was able to fool the family of his common-law wife into believing he was the prolific singer and scammed them for what would amount to 54 million yen (roughly 515,268 US dollars). He had previously been arrested three times (!!!) for scamming a previous lover's family for a total of around $24k and for assault. A longtime fan of the band's, Kasahara was apparently so committed to this gimmick that he even told his mother 10 years ago and gave her concert tickets to see "him" perform, when in reality he was actually unemployed. He even got identical arm and neck tattoos as Kyo himself and would find time to leave home on the days that Dir would be performing. He would even state that Dynamite Tommy, the owner of Free-Will, had taken his bank book, which is why he frequently demanded money. @secret_no_03 The whole discussion about the necessity or estrategy of whether a centred or winged political position could be interesting at some point, but the actual scandalous way that you've constantly showed at the moment of bringing up serious stuff like a raging teeanger makes you no more different from the "SJWs" that you love to blame to, with all the generalizing, fanatic, ilogic and rude behaviour over it. Although considering "their" failures, at least they comitted (along other forces) to bring a 5% of decent media representation to lots of mislabeled 'minorities', among other stuff. Btw, I said "ilogic", because I obviously can't pass over the fact that while you are blaming, let's say, "gender-non-conforming lifestyles" for instance, at the same time you speak out all your words of admiration over the work of transvestite underground musicians and discuss about weird porn and sex practices that are very far from the standards for sexuality that your self-proclaimed 'liberal' messiahs share. Perhaps I could have more respect for your opinion if you were more consistent, that is, instead of talking out that 'schizophreniac', you could show your whole disrespect for these topics arguing from, for example, a conservative vision over sex and gender, and consider Közi a sick dude with 'gender dysphoria' (if that ever existed), or the fellows at the Sex/porn thread to need 'God' in their lives, whatsoever... I mean, have you ever, EVER, considered what the authors you cite here supporting your delusional 'free-speech' ideas would think about your hobbies or sexual interests? Sometimes I doubt I you are not more than a bored troll just trying to reach attention from people really concerned about these matters, because reading you is REALLY hillarious... MH was really a different place before you started your whole rant waterfall in every corner of it...

Everything you said is true, except for the LGBT identitarions and them going nuts if you say that there are two genders, don't give them what they want whether it's calling them by whatever pronoun they want or what they identify as. It's funny how people so anti-free speech are so fascist when it comes to pushing their believes on others. I'm sorry, but I don't have to adhere to your crazy doctrine because you have body dysmorphia or some other personal problem. 🙄

Marvel hasn't done a good movie since X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) apart from the X-Men installment itself and Wolverine. The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is pandering so heavily towards the millenial meme-generation with its constant usage of comic relief, 4th wall breaking and lightheartedness, and has little respect for the original comics. I'll take DC over Marvel any day.

    Visual kei among friends

To be honest, I have gotten more friends, although most of them being in their 40s or 50s, in real life for being a fan of Loudness and EZO than VK ever did for me. However, VK did manage to snag me my boyfriend of 15+ years. It's hilarious to tell people that we started to date because I had pictures of Dir en grey and Malice Mizer hanging in my locker in the 8th grade and my SO overreacted when he noticed because he was a closeted VK fan and thought he would never find another VK fan in our tiny, country bumpkin town. We ended up getting a lot of our close friends into VK during high school, but I'm pretty sure most of them don't listen to anything related to VK anymore.

Regarding to Kamijo, I don't think it can be said that he simply changed his vocal range and that's it. Rather, I think Kamijo changed his range because he learned how to sing properly. That is to say, he realized that songs like Lareine's (tenor range) are not suitable at all for his own natural range (clearly baritone). This is easy to prove to anyone who listens just to a single Lareine song. And in fact I think it was clear to Kamijo himself ; in fact, several songs from Lareine's repertoire were tuned down for live performances. Check "Metamorphose" as an example: Album version (on C minor key) Live version (on B minor key, and also an epic performance) However, Kamijo might be still heard not so comfortable. Add to this the feminine and in-pain characterization that Kamijo tried to build for his on-stage persona. What you get is a voice that sounds like choked, it is clear that he is making a huge effort to be able to reach every high note. Also, I think that Kamijo smoked at that time, right? Much worse. Either way, Kamijo had a very good vocal performance in Lareine. Not only because he always kept himself into the key (which in visual kei is like asking a lot lol), but because, despite all this I said, he managed to keep a flow of voice that was voluminous, and all that while charaterizing it in a very convincing and beautiful way. Either way, fortunately he has decided to adjust to his natural range since Versailles began. His voice now sounds much more natural and versatile; he even can reach the tenor notes, which as I said are not natural for him, through some falsetto, which is actually heard very nice and dramatic. I think the same can be said regarding Gackt. Check the following "Mizerable"versions: Album version (on key of D flat minor) Live version (on key of C minor) Now there are other vocalists, that actually improved over the time, but in the beggining didn't try to lie to themselves proving that their range was higher than what their throats could actually offer without killing themselves into the process lol Ruki have always had a beautiful voice and a decent technic, but I feel that songs like "Wakaremichi" or "Miseinen" sounds legitly good nowadays. Ruki now can manage to run trough the different notes and volumes very smoothly, while managing to bring out a strong flow of voice, even while delivering this gothic-inspired deep voice that is one of the trademarks of the 'visual kei' sound, but that makes singers of the scene really -like, REALLY- bad 90% of the times. Album version (2002): Live version (2012, and also another epic performance) Also, Miku from Antic Cafe and Asagi from D can other great examples of vocal improving.

    Naziploitation in Visual-kei

I wish I could find this picture right now, but when Chanty popped up on the scene they did it with blackface. That's what turned me off the band entirely. But did they mean anything with it? Probably not, because they live in a pretty homogeneous country and they don't have the cultural conditioning to understand why it is wrong. I would say they lack that conditioning so much, it wraps around the continuum and becomes something so foreign to them that it's not even shocking. Does that make any sense? I agree with some of the points you made, but not with the conclusion. People do edgy shit all the time for attention. That doesn't mean they actually believe what they're doing. Visual kei bands appropriated nazi imagery years ago, but that doesn't mean they are automatically all neo nazis. Most bands have never appropriated this imagery, so by your logic most bands aren't neo nazis! We're going to need Akane-level outbursts on twitter saying they hate gays, jews, and blacks, or lyrics or interviews that say as much, before I would be willing to point to a band member and say "yep, that's a neo nazi right there". If you wish to educate us some more, exactly who is it that you are thinking of and what proof do you have? Proof is the coin of the realm here on MH.

    Lareine

Hello! I have copy number 14 of the DVD. It contains a concert, but actually much more. Two PVs (Fleur and ROMANCIA), the Fleur is much better then the VHS release we only have, it contains many many pictures in a slideshow that were released nowhere else, over 100. It also contains a slideshow of lots of unseen concert footage, but with just a song over it. And it contains excerpts of yet another major era concert, with about 15 seconds per song, it has Billet in that! The only live Billet footage there is. This DVD just shows as a love letter how much love KAMIJO has for his fans, he didn't have money to print any more copies probably, because he had to print more compilation CDs at that time like Imperial Concerto, but it's still a big love letter. Good news, I PUT A PART OF IT ON YT!! Share it like widefire guys. But I love this DVD so much, it's my favourite part of my collection besides their 1st demo tape (100 limited), and I want it to keep it's huge value among collectors, being sold for 100s the rare times it shows up, so I'm not going to put anymore online. BUT I'm going to make an entry of this DVD in Discogs with a detailed tracklist guys I'm already doing a lot for the fanbase by giving info and that one vid, cus there's litirally NO info at all about this at all on the internet besides the Puresound entry. Oh yes, if you have this DVD, YA BETTER NOT SHARE IT TOO It must stay valuable. And OMG I read your long post about their disbandment! This made me sooo sad.... I already knew some of this but not with this much detail! I always knew LAREINE had so much love for each other and their fans, even though I hear people sometimes say KAMIJO is an asshole. Or even a few posts before that they didn't like each other LOL. APPLAUSE RECORDS was the only reason why LAREINE could still make music, I'm so grateful KAMIJO made it when he still had money in Fierte era. And their late era music has so much gems! Imperial Concerto, Sakura, Drama, 愛されていた日々-Ever Love-, 月の狩人, basically the whole Winter Romantic EP, but there's a lot of just good and some decent tracks too so that's why people think it. But I've listened to NEVER CAGE and Imperial Concerto sooo much times, hundreds that I love it all hahaha. Only 眠れぬ恋は真珠 I actively dislike and avoid. It might be one of the worst LAREINE songs ever lol. I didn't know they actually COULDN'T find a drummer, that's soo sad! 😢 Also almost ALL releases of LAREINE after 2003 are expensive ASF and rare and rarely show up: NEVER CAGE, the main album of that time is rare, the three versions are all three rare, normal, Deluxe and Limited... The main singles: Trailer, Sakura, Drama and Sakura -Second Season-, 雪恋詩, 道化師の舞曲 and Cinderella Fantasy are rare too! It's exeptional that these are on puresound at the moment actually, they're KINDAAA overpriced, but are still expensive items. And let's not talk about Best Album Ballad and Fleur, Imperial Concerto, Winter Romantic, Deep Forest, 白蝶 and 女王という名の貴公子 that are each worth over 100.... A prime example of releasing REALLY GOOD music on limited batches of prints. They actually also had a revival of the Fleur fanclub magazine in 2004 that had a few issues, these seem to be so rare that I've never ever seem them on sale. Heck, even the Fleur magazines from the major era BARELY go on sale... I'm dreaming of ever seeing a Bara wa live performance, question: Did they perform this and Billet in their late era concerts? Or songs like ピンクの傘 and パリは秋色 from Fierte, two of my favourites and sooo underrated. Sadly these four are not on the THE LAST OF ROMANCE I DVD main concert. And some good info: I'm working on a huge LAREINE fansite! With scans of every release booklet, a full discography AND miscellanous items like the many many message CD/VHS/Tapes, lots of information, magazine and book scans! It's sitll in early stages so no link yet, but I will make a topic and a new LAREINE thread here (this one's from 2007 lol) when it's close to done and presentable! Using a paid domain and a very good Wordpress theme with many plugins. I think I am very fitted to make the website since I own almost every item ever except the FC magazines that I barely own. Inertla thank you so much for your post!! Can I use info of it in my site? I will credit you! This might also be my favourite post on this whole site lol! Bye Also if anyone is wondering why Reine de fleur I and II sound so weird, it's because it's a compilation of pre-BLUE ROMANCE LAREINE except for Detest Off Doll and a version of Féerie. KAMIJO's voice was completely untrained in some of the songs on it. When I first started listening and downloaded Reine de fleur I and II I was also very confused by this LOL. I put on 季節風 and Dir en gray at random and was like "WTF??" lol

    Lareine

I lived in Tokyo and went to all their local shows and many of the away ones too during their second period in the 2000s. Something that I think isn’t fully appreciated among international fans is just how unpopular and broke Lareine was during that time, and how desperately and passionately they worked despite the obstacles. But every concert was magical. It had to be. There was no reason to do it otherwise, and a million reasons to quit. It felt like borrowed time, and I was always so happy and grateful to be able to see them despite the bittersweet feeling they would have been better off doing something else. They always looked exhausted at events, rarely had new costumes, rarely even had new goods because I think they had trouble coming up with deposits. Cheki didn’t start to become a thing until late in their history (2005-ish?) when they’d already spent years grinding away with little return. I suspect the reason why they were able to put out as many releases as they did is because back during Lareine’s Sony days Kamijo invested in buying a bunch of his own production equipment. I think normally an indie band at that level wouldn’t have had those resources. But time to write and rehearse seemed like a scarce commodity too back then. There were times when Kamijo looked half dead. And every time Lareine did a little tour we could watch Kamijo perk up day by day, at the same time as us fans with normal lives were getting more and more tired as the tour went on. It always made me wonder what on earth kind of awful schedule he normally had in Tokyo, juggling the band and probably a part-time job, that going on tour would feel like a vacation to him. (Later on when I read Versailles interviews, they mentioned that Kamijo and Hizaki first met while working at Third Stage.) Unfortunately by 2003 Lareine was already perceived as old, out of date, and uncool. A ‘90s band. If they hadn’t paused in 2000 maybe things would have been different, maybe they could have built a solid base like Dir or Pierrot. But coming back in 2003 it was too late, the trends had already changed. Lareine had few fans back then, and it seemed like all of us were fans from before. I never met any Japanese fans who said they were new. (only international fans) Young VK fans didn’t care. Lareine wrote some of the currently trendy themes into their music in ways that were interesting instead of pure copy/paste, and us old fans had fun, but nobody else cared. They did some amazing experimental stuff on stage, and nobody saw it except us few old fans. To give you an idea of how young fans perceived them, there was a big outcry when Versailles was announced because people didn’t think a pansy weak vocalist with a thin high voice like Kamijo should be playing with awesome (but unknown) guitarists like Hizaki and Teru. They really got outraged when we heard Versailles was going to have a heavy sound. I got in a lot of arguments online at that time with people who clearly thought I was a delusional fangirl for saying that Kamijo’s voice is powerful enough to sing heavier music. In February 2006 Kazumi announced that he was leaving Lareine and retiring from music. I never blamed him, I was thankful that he had done his best to help bring us great music for so long despite the hardships. But this was really the beginning of the end. Lareine put out big ads in the major VK magazines looking for a new drummer, and they even went out of their way to explicitly write that they would take applications from anybody regardless of age or sex or nationality, as long as they could play and would love the band. I think that would be shocking to see in a band’s want ad even today, and this was in 2006 before the explosion of international tours had happened. But they weren’t able to find a drummer, and then during the summer Mayu vanished again. Honestly I can’t even blame Mayu either for wanting to quit under the circumstances, but it was terrible that he vanished without communication or warning. The Club Citta live they did in October was originally supposed to be a Halloween Party event live with multiple bands, not their last live. I went to as many of Kamijo’s anniversary tour dates as I could, since it was so special. The Tokyo final with everyone was amazing. So glad I went. p.s. “Drama” was so great live that to this day I can still half-hear the performance in my memory, even though they only played it twice in Sapporo in February 2006 before Kazumi left. It was so powerful. Kazumi and Emiru were much louder than on the studio version; this song actually has a really sexy rhythm when you can hear them. Mayu took the electric part instead of the acoustic one. They came together solid and strong booming on the beat in that last chorus on the song, Kamijo singing powerfully instead of gently, and hard on the beat like the others. I regret not bringing my MD recorder to Sapporo, but I never imagined that those 2 nights would be the last times we could enjoy Lareine normally.

    Lareine

Any thoughts on their disbandment? I've always felt that 95% of the stuff after Fierte was pretty generic, thus boring. I deeply believe it reflects an atmosphere of low creative energy, clearly derivated of the loose bonds between the members, with their easy comes and goes. This is something I've never came to understand fully, since there is much evidence that, although they never reached the mainstream attention bands like Shazna had, neither the levels of popularity bands like Dir en grey or Pierrot enjoyed in those years, Lareine was indeed a solid band with a strong concept, decent musicians and organic compositions, that had marked with fire the scene for ever. In fact, it is obvious to me that they started the prince and princesses trope back in the day. I will always praise their contribution of a very genuine and refreshing approach to the visual kei clichés that will never be forgotten. A tragic-concept band project met an actual tragic end...😢 P.D.: the tears I shed while watching Kamijo sing Fiançailles during his anniversary tour date in my country were the worthiest ever. 💗🌹

    Laputa

I think Laputa is just one of those bands that will always be appreciated more in the Japanese VK scene than the overseas one, and there's not too many VK shows I've seen in Nagoya where the band didn't mention them at some point while joking/MCing. My fave songs by them are "Yurenagara..." and "Eve ~last eve for you~". But for the latter, it sounds nicer on the album with the piano intro imho. Aki has one of those really unique voices in VK, so if you're feeling it, might be worth checking out his solo work after Laputa disbanded.

    VK and Kpop....why?

i saw a tumblr post addressing this recently as a lot of the fandom are converting their visual blogs to kpop ones. the point they brought up was that its a shame to go from a subculture with so much fun and individuality to a genre with one set ideal of beauty, talent and composition. its fucking true--where else you find bands like buglug, keel, DIV, pentagon, avelcain, DADAROMA, DOF, grieva, gazette and MORE basically all operating under the same label of "visual kei" but with incredible differences in sound and image? from metal to pop to alt rock to jazz to dance rock/electronic its all represented in the current scene. from what i understand, kpop isn't all one genre but its nowhere near the level you see in visual kei. in that respect its hard to compare the two, but either way its sad to see ex-visual fans become huge kpop stans where all the boys and girls look, dress, rap and sing the same with the same cute squeaky clean image. like come on, raise ur freak flag with pride go look like a visual idiot its better than being like allllllll the rest of 'em

    ZORO will disband

This is a sudden announcement, but ZORO will disband on 2015.05.05. There's no regret in this decision, since it had been made precisely because ZORO is more important than anything else and is what we love most. This definitely wasn't an answer that I can give alone; it's one that Tatsuhi and I came up with together. I'll make a promise here. Until our final live on 2015.05.05, ZORO will become even better [than we've been]. We'll end in the best way we can. To all who have been supporting us, thank you. -Ryuuji For 7 years we've kept things going till now. Thanks to the support of various people, and most importantly everyone who has cheered us on, we could continue ZORO hitherto. I also won't have any regrets in our decision to disband. We'll keep going till the end. And we'll continue to bring great music to everyone till the end. -Tatsuhi (took some liberties with certain parts as it's real difficult to type on mobile..)

You dont seem to have the slighest idea of what Nazism was, is and will be. You really should read something!!! First, deniying the Holocaust is EXACTLY what neo nazis do. And Visual Kei Artists, do so, as posted by the japanese guy that lives in germany. Second, IMPERIAL JAPAN WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT ALLY OF GERMANY AND THE WHOLE AXIS IN WW II BESIDES ITALY !!!! How do you not know this???!! THE ALLIES threw 2 NUCLEAR BOMBS to japanese cities full of people. Third: Swastika is originally indo-aryan (vedic) symbol, before it became buddhist, iranic (scythian) and Pagan (european) symbol. Visual Kei artists are secretly neo-nazis, and they are angry at ex-communist and ex-allies countries. Is this good or bad? well, depends of who you ask. Same goes for capitalists/communists.
