Welcome to the 3rd annual most notable VK looks presented by yours truly, The Reverend. As usual, we're here to celebrate the 'Visual' in Visual Kei. Suggest your favorite or least favorite or weirdest looks from the past year in the comments below! Hello from Austria!

Hello everyone, I am a female graphic designer from Austria and I work for a local weekly newspaper. It has been a while since I was actually active in a forum, since every other one got deleted due to inactivity. That's why I mainly used Facebook and Twitter, but at the moment I'm a little fed up by social media, so I thought it would be a good idea to go "back to the roots". When I was a teenager I already listened to J-Rock – mainly since I watched lots of Anime shows and it helped me discover quite a few great bands back then. My clothing style changed over the years, but I have Visual Kei like hairstyles since 2009 – so around 10 years. I enjoy drawing, listening to music, going to the movies, watching tv shows, reading and I am interested in tattoos and piercings, Anime and Manga, Buddhism, japanese culture and language in general, animal welfare and I am also a vegetarian. I currently got two cats – a long haired black and white one and a short haired red and white one. If you got any further questions, feel free to ask or message me.

Second opinion time. So I got a copy of the album, listened to it through a few times in CD quality, and it's really grown on me. There's more variety than people make out (admittedly mostly thanks to songs not written by Issei) and the mixing isn't god-awful. Agreed, it's not quite professional studio-level quality but for a first release recorded in an apartment, it's not bad at all. I would say that the second press is a good purchase since it includes most of the good tracks and leaves out the instrumental fillers. I do really like unknown though and Blink is good apart from the highs. As for the whole 'Issei is a dick' conversation, all I have to say is that his personality or private life don't have any bearing on his musical talent or whether or not you can enjoy the band's music. The dude's a good drummer, has a good ear for upcoming talent, and writes decent stuff. Not condoning his attitude or behaviour in the past, but as far as the music goes it's irrelevant in my opinion.

Sure. Most of them are credited as 'Music: Issei' but there's a couple of exceptions. 受難 (junan) is credited to Uta, Believing to Yoh, another DAY to Mio, and 色失 (shokushitsu? iro-ushinai?) and SAD[ist.] were apparently composed by Tsubasa (ex-DIMLIM, I guess). Lyrics are all credited to Mio, and it seems Issei produced the instrumental tracks solo.

I just watched the entire Kamijo 20th Anniversary DVD "La Vie En Rose" and I don't even know how I feel right now. It feels like I've ascended to another realm. It just amazes me how GOOD Kamijo is on stage. I think I'm feeling my past 12 years of love all at once, since I mentioned before that I had to like him in secret, since my friend would get mad if I even mentioned him without her saying something first (Versailles was the exception because I liked Jasmine). But oh man, I feel so happy that I watched that. It was a great dvd. I really really hope that he's performing when I go on my trip to Japan, because I NEED to actually experience one of his lives. He has gained the number two spot as far as favorite bands go. Sorry D'espairsRay, I love you, but the only other band that has ever made me feel this way is D. I just. I can't even describe it right now. But I feel so good. I could feel the love he had for his fans in his music. It's so lovely. Even though this was from 2015 and was pre-recorded, I still felt the love through the screen. Such a weird feeling. But bless you, Kamijo. I hope I get to see you live one day. ❤️

drunk & wanted to try making vintage magazine/booklet-esque photos. getting back to VK really pushed me to be more theatrical outside my art again, it's funny all I want to do is perform but I have the 'no mouth & must scream' art ability instead lol... Growing out my hair is going well, oddly i feel more confident. I think I will grow it all the way and maybe one day do some sort of real vk inspired look, but right now it's at too awkward a phase (also no, no eyelashes i have trich)

Another chapter has been written and filed away into the ever growing library of visual kei history, so we resume our customary annual review of all of the great albums that saw the light of day in 2018. Unlike previous years, we elected to wait until the middle of January so the stragglers of the year had their fair chance to weigh in. This list is also not in any specific order, although DIMLIM's CHEDOARA deserves a mention for getting the most votes internally and therefore kicks the list off with a bang. Even in our most challenging years, there's always something fresh and new around the corner waiting to be discovered. Like always, this isn't an exhaustive list and plenty of the hidden gems slip through the cracks, so if you have anything to add to the list tack it on at the end so the entire community can find something new to enjoy. Without further ado, here are some great J-Rock albums of 2018. DIMLIM -- CHEDOARA @The Reverend @emmny @helcchi Sigh - Heir to Despair @The Reverend @helcchi Dir en grey - The Insulated World @emmny emmurée - lightless @The Reverend キズ - 「傷痕」 @platy Mass of the Fermenting Dregs - No New World @The Reverend @Zeus 陰陽座 (Onmyo-Za) - 覇道明王 (Hadou Myouou) @Zeus The GazettE - NINTH @Zeus グリモア - プシュコマキア @platy DADAROMA - dadaism#4 @helcchi @platy lynch. - XIII @YuyoDrift Thanks for reading!

I booked my hotel room for my trip to Japan in October. And I'm definitely going to go both concert hopping, and visual Kei shopping. But the only bands that I really like that are still doing concerts are Dir En Grey, D, Matenrou Opera, Kamijo and One Ok rock! What are some bands that I should check out? Maybe buy some cheaper cds of theirs while I'm at Closet Child? Also what places should I go to? I'll be staying right in the heart of Shinjuku, right by the subway/train, so I can literally train anywhere. I know that I'm going to go to Like An Edison, Jishuban Club, and Closet Child. But I definitely want to explore Tokyo. The last time I went, I didn't get to do what I wanted to, but this year I'm going to be ONLY in Tokyo, so I want to experience as much of it as I can! And go to concerts! (I only went to one because I had pre-purchased tickets.) I just hope the bands that I want to see are playing while I'm there haha! I'll be there October 24th - November 7th, so if anyone has suggestions as to what I should do during that time, I would LOVE to hear them!! ❤️

Eh, I went to check out the website; the blu-ray DVD will only consist of 15 songs in total from both concerts. WHY WHY WHY????? A BLU-RAY CAN CONTAIN BOTH CONCERTS IN FULL!!!!

    KRAD will disband(?)

I didnt understand everything myself but its basically how they feel about the disbandment, how they thought Krad would be like but the result didnt pay out as they wanted it to and we see it ourselves actually. They didnt get enough out of it and thats what happens usually when bands dont meet their expectations. I think the vocal of schwartz;mist mentioned something like that a while ago aswell, like if you dont sell and people dont attend the lives, which is really sad, cause(as the most might know) I am a huge fan of KRAD(and SHEDIA obv.) and not knowing when and if they will be back really sucks. I just hope they will be more successful with their next bands/projects 🙏

    BUCK-TICK

Pretty cool day today! It's bassist Higuchi Yutaka's 52nd birthday, and 29 years ago on this day the band's single "Aku no hana" was released! What makes it extra special is that the B-side "UNDER THE MOON LIGHT" (which is exclusive to this single, not appearing on the later album) has writing credits from U-ta, penning the lyrics. This makes this track the only one in B-T's history where U-ta contributed writing something. It's a fun little song but personally I'm not too crazy about it. I'd link it but no one has uploaded it on YT (awww ).

It's not overpriced. It's self produced. So of course it cost more money than being produced by huge label.

    Dir en grey

22 years ago, on January 24, 1997, DIR EN GREY played their first ever show at Nagano J. Kyo, Kaoru, Die and Shinya arrived the day before and met Toshiya in a parking lot. They stayed at Toshiya's parents' house over night and on the next day, they booked two hours in a studio to rehearse. In the evening, there was an event and the future members of DIR EN GREY performed on stage together for the first time. Since they had not thought of a band name, they called themselves DEATHMASK and played around four Kuroyume cover songs. Toshiya also performed with D+L as their support guitarist on that evening. So since it's already the 24th in Japan, today marks 22 years since the true beginning of DIR EN GREY! 😊

What newer VK band interests you?

I'm not wild about every single thing they've released, but I think Kizu definitely have potential because it seems like they've managed to draw in both "dark" visual kei fans and people into the more accessible stuff. Whoever is managing them also clearly knows what they're doing, which seems to be pretty rare these days. Plus they've got Lime, who is basically exactly the type of singer I like, so I can't not pay attention to them. I don't see them revolutionizing VK or anything, but I feel like Asty has the potential to be a really solid band if they keep going long enough. The songs are catchy, Takeru's voice stands out a bit, and their looks seem to be getting more polished with each release.
