  3. This has probably been asked, but can anyone name VK bands that got better towards the end of their career? (Not counting bands that were only active for like 2 years)

I'm trying to honestly assess if I have an everlasting nostalgia hard-on, or if bands just tend to lose that youthful passion they needed to once prove themselves once they've already made it. With literally every longer-lasting VK band I like, I favor their earlier/first releases (Versailles, Vidoll, Matenrou Opera, Mucc, Nightmare, Kagrra,, 12012, Ayabie, Miyavi, blah blah).

I feel like the GazettE might get mentioned, and I fucked with them for the most part until DIM, but as I get older I find myself caring less about their high-budget modern metal sound (which they continue to pursue, arguably quite well?) in favor of many of their early recordings that may have been slightly rough around the edges in some way, but oozed with passion and desperation. This all despite the fact I discovered GazettE around the stacked rubbish area and didn't care for much before it until many years after.

Thoughts????? DO bands ever get good™ again??

oh and I'm not sure it counts (because they seem to be active and going strong), but DIAURA's latest ablum is a huge step-up over their previous discog (which I only have a fragmentary knowledge of, but from what I've heard it's p mediocre until recently.)

  4. Favorite early ガゼット release? I love them all dearly, but the Zakurogata no Yuutsu/Zetsu/Miseinen maxi is just one of the most perfectly crafted releases I've ever heard. Anyone else feel similar?

  12. Is there a reason Wagakki Band isn't associated with Visual Kei? I just watched one of their really popular videos for the first time and everyone looks the part. Went to look at their wikipedia page (lel), and vk isn't mentioned at all

    2. CAT5

      CAT5

I believe it's because these bands were originally rooted in the doujin/touhou scene which, from my understanding, isn't traditionally associated with Visual Kei. Though I doubt the two are entirely mutually exclusive.

    3. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

@CAT5 For Wagakki Band, they were initially a vocaloid cover band, which is definitely a completely different continuum from Visual Kei (but that hasn't stopped Gackt or Yohio from jumping in on making a vocaloid lol).

    4. KrumpingChihuahua

      KrumpingChihuahua

I remember that i thought at first also they are a visual kei group. Beside the visual kei connections from some band members i think the main reason comes from them wearing costumes on stage, then their bassist asa crossdresses often, it comes easy to someones mind they could be visual kei.  There is a high chance that the vk refusal had to do with them being a major band like Himeaimichu stated. (They was contracted to avex)

Also Machiya is Machiya in Waggaki Band but Shin Oumura(its his real name) in m:a.ture and his solo stuff.

      reminiscing2004

@lichtlune That song makes me Nostalgic of listening to Cure's short-lived online radio station in 2009 (curemediausa.com). The DJ (was his name Shion?) wasn't shy about his taste and would basically play DELUHI, ALSDEAD, アンド and similar bands over and over again.

That was an exciting time and it really felt like those bands were all going to blow up in popularity..

  14. Anyone have examples of bands that were way better in their later discography?? I feel like all of my favorite music is from the first half of an artist's career, even outside of VK.

There are so many bands/artists that I even feel like I need to explicitly mention that I only like their old stuff in conversation, because they've gone from really great to really not great imo. Thoughts?

mucc for sure for me, i like their older stuff but right around 2010 they got hella more interesting imho.
Boris as well, for a non-vk answer; Flood and Feedbacker are masterpieces but aside from those i think their songwriting's just gone up from Pink on.

not sure how popular either of those opinions are tho.

    3. Spectralion

      Spectralion

Royz is getting better every album. Their last album was a hard banger.

    4. Tokage

      Tokage

IMO cali=/=gari peaked around the period when they released Dai 6 - Dai 8, which was after 2 vocalists had come and gone already, does that count?

Malice Mizer's first stuff w/ Tetsu is distinctly worse than everything that came after imo, so i guess they fit the bill for me

I somehow like Dead End's newer stuff more than their older material, possibly because I dig Morrie's "new" voice more than how he used to sound back in the day

The Gallo's like this for me if only cuz their older material's sort of iffy in terms of production values from time to time

Buck-Tick and Merry are examples of bands that are consistently good for the most part

For a non-VK example, for some reason I enjoy P-Model's later stuff more than their older material, idk why

fast forward 10 years, and kamijo is one of the vk queens I'm really fond of these days.

I'm only listening to versailles once in a while, but I def. mostly prefer their earlier singles, their b-side output was phenomenal, but lead track often had an exaggerated sense of pathos, which I'm not really fond of.

And I do feel you on the whole excessively melodrama vibe on a lot of their singles.

  20. I don't understand why the bass level is so low in Leda's projects. I just assume that someone who was such a heavyweight sick bassist would want some sick bass action on their recordings. For DELUHI, I can kind of understand, as Aggy seemed to be a pretty barebones, unnoticeable bass player, but ryu from FED seems to be pretty great. *seems* because I can hardly ever hear him, but it looks like hes doing some tough shit in the live dvd

Oh well, the new FED single slams, so I finally care :-P

It really bothers me aswell, but I've accepted that this is just the way he intends for his music to sound. Yggdalive was a beast of release crippled by some real poor mixing table decisions, and this is more or less the case for everything after that. He also does that to the drums, which further proves my point. it's like he separates the base/percussion to serve as stepping stone to guitar lines and vocals. That's why everything he does sounds better live (he can't damp Sujk live, lol). and the thing with the 8-string does make sense, listen to Inhale's 03:02~03:30. The bass is there, you can listen to it in several moments, but the base guitar basically does the job for it. Nadir is another song with some killer bass lines that could've gotten some spotlight. The oddness in all of this is that Leda was a bassist in first place, so it's not like that's just guitarrists being guitarrists, lol

Hasn't Sujk always used triggered drums? I always hated that about him

    4. reminiscing2004

      reminiscing2004

@rekzerpretty much every (metal) band uses triggered drums for the last decade or two, but most of the time it will be mixed in with the original signal. a lot of the DELUHI stuff probably had triggered kick/snare samples, but it was layered with the actual drum kit. If you listen to like the single version of Two Hurt for instance, you can actually hear the dynamics of the snare (unlike this current FED stuff)

@MamoYeah, I'm just going off of the songs they posted on Youtube.

  22. (Without cheating) can you name any releases exact release date that you still remember from being once so hyped?

I've thought long and hard and this is my list:

    Versailles - Jubilee : 2010 Jan 20th

    Versailles - History & Lemon Hall DVD's : 2009 May 20th

    DELUHI - Flashblack CD/DVD : 2009 May 20th

    DELUHI - Yggdalive : 2009 November 4
