Welcome to the 3rd annual most notable VK looks presented by yours truly, The Reverend. As usual, we're here to celebrate the 'Visual' in Visual Kei. Suggest your favorite or least favorite or weirdest looks from the past year in the comments below! Thanks to the ORZ team for helping out and contributing, and especially @platy for making like five banners for me and letting me choose which one I liked best. マーブルヘッド (Marblehead) ユメリープ (Yumeleep) キズ (Kizu) lynch. Hello from Austria!

Hello everyone, I am a female graphic designer from Austria and I work for a local weekly newspaper. It has been a while since I was actually active in a forum, since every other one got deleted due to inactivity. That's why I mainly used Facebook and Twitter, but at the moment I'm a little fed up by social media, so I thought it would be a good idea to go "back to the roots". When I was a teenager I already listened to J-Rock – mainly since I watched lots of Anime shows and it helped me discover quite a few great bands back then. My clothing style changed over the years, but I have Visual Kei like hairstyles since 2009 – so around 10 years. I enjoy drawing, listening to music, going to the movies, watching tv shows, reading and I am interested in tattoos and piercings, Anime and Manga, Buddhism, japanese culture and language in general, animal welfare and I am also a vegetarian. I currently got two cats – a long haired black and white one and a short haired red and white one. If you got any further questions, feel free to ask or message me.

Second opinion time. So I got a copy of the album, listened to it through a few times in CD quality, and it's really grown on me. There's more variety than people make out (admittedly mostly thanks to songs not written by Issei) and the mixing isn't god-awful. Agreed, it's not quite professional studio-level quality but for a first release recorded in an apartment, it's not bad at all. I would say that the second press is a good purchase since it includes most of the good tracks and leaves out the instrumental fillers. I do really like unknown though and Blink is good apart from the highs. As for the whole 'Issei is a dick' conversation, all I have to say is that his personality or private life don't have any bearing on his musical talent or whether or not you can enjoy the band's music. The dude's a good drummer, has a good ear for upcoming talent, and writes decent stuff. Not condoning his attitude or behaviour in the past, but as far as the music goes it's irrelevant in my opinion.

Sure. Most of them are credited as 'Music: Issei' but there's a couple of exceptions. 受難 (junan) is credited to Uta, Believing to Yoh, another DAY to Mio, and 色失 (shokushitsu? iro-ushinai?) and SAD[ist.] were apparently composed by Tsubasa (ex-DIMLIM, I guess). Lyrics are all credited to Mio, and it seems Issei produced the instrumental tracks solo.

drunk & wanted to try making vintage magazine/booklet-esque photos. getting back to VK really pushed me to be more theatrical outside my art again, it's funny all I want to do is perform but I have the 'no mouth & must scream' art ability instead lol... Growing out my hair is going well, oddly i feel more confident. I think I will grow it all the way and maybe one day do some sort of real vk inspired look, but right now it's at too awkward a phase (also no, no eyelashes i have trich)

    Favorite J-rock Guitar Solos!

Yeah, I know. You'd think a thread like this already existed here, but somehow, it doesn't. (well, there was this old thread, but that's not exactly the same thing.) So yeah, what are some of your favorite guitar solos in J-rock? You know, those solos that are so damn soulful that they sucker punch you right in the feelz, those solos that absolutely melt your face off with their sheer technical prowess, or those solos that are just inexplicably memorable! Whatever the reason, what are some of the guitar solos that have spoken to YOU? .... A somewhat recent solo that's become a favorite of mine is in "PHANTOM" by lynch. It actually caught me off guard, since I wouldn't typically expect it from this band, but man, I found this one to be pretty powerful. It's very clean and traditional, but it's also very soulful. They definitely hit all the "right" notes, and for me, the solo is the apex of this song. Listening to this was what initially prompted me to search for a thread like this, and subsequently make this one. The solo starts at about 2:48. This is probably the most recent J-rock solo that's cemented itself in my head. Though I'll probably post more at a later date. What are some of your favorites? (also, please use spoilers if you add video)

Another chapter has been written and filed away into the ever growing library of visual kei history, so we resume our customary annual review of all of the great albums that saw the light of day in 2018. Unlike previous years, we elected to wait until the middle of January so the stragglers of the year had their fair chance to weigh in. This list is also not in any specific order, although DIMLIM's CHEDOARA deserves a mention for getting the most votes internally and therefore kicks the list off with a bang. Even in our most challenging years, there's always something fresh and new around the corner waiting to be discovered. Like always, this isn't an exhaustive list and plenty of the hidden gems slip through the cracks, so if you have anything to add to the list tack it on at the end so the entire community can find something new to enjoy. Without further ado, here are some great J-Rock albums of 2018. I have very mixed feelings about this band. I was on board with the hype in the lead-up to their first single, but after hearing it, it was mostly forgettable other than the title track. This new preview also sounds pretty generic to me. I think the members are talented but I'm worried they won't take off because the most memorable thing about them is their outfits. I think someone involved has a lot of money to throw at this project because Muku's costumes in particular are insane. And of course the 3D projection mapping at their first one-man was really cool but can't have come cheap.

It's almost as if Isseis skills are in talent scouting and not making music (DIMLIM improved after he left) and certainly not in mixing/mastering (everything sounds awful that he's had a hand in the recording process). Perhaps he should form a label instead of bands, being an asshole is pretty much mandatory for that job anyway.

    BUCK-TICK

Pretty cool day today! It's bassist Higuchi Yutaka's 52nd birthday, and 29 years ago on this day the band's single "Aku no hana" was released! What makes it extra special is that the B-side "UNDER THE MOON LIGHT" (which is exclusive to this single, not appearing on the later album) has writing credits from U-ta, penning the lyrics. This makes this track the only one in B-T's history where U-ta contributed writing something. It's a fun little song but personally I'm not too crazy about it. I'd link it but no one has uploaded it on YT (awww ).

    Dir en grey

22 years ago, on January 24, 1997, DIR EN GREY played their first ever show at Nagano J. Kyo, Kaoru, Die and Shinya arrived the day before and met Toshiya in a parking lot. They stayed at Toshiya's parents' house over night and on the next day, they booked two hours in a studio to rehearse. In the evening, there was an event and the future members of DIR EN GREY performed on stage together for the first time. Since they had not thought of a band name, they called themselves DEATHMASK and played around four Kuroyume cover songs. Toshiya also performed with D+L as their support guitarist on that evening. So since it's already the 24th in Japan, today marks 22 years since the true beginning of DIR EN GREY! 😊

What newer VK band interests you?

I'm not wild about every single thing they've released, but I think Kizu definitely have potential because it seems like they've managed to draw in both "dark" visual kei fans and people into the more accessible stuff. Whoever is managing them also clearly knows what they're doing, which seems to be pretty rare these days. Plus they've got Lime, who is basically exactly the type of singer I like, so I can't not pay attention to them. I don't see them revolutionizing VK or anything, but I feel like Asty has the potential to be a really solid band if they keep going long enough. The songs are catchy, Takeru's voice stands out a bit, and their looks seem to be getting more polished with each release.

We all know that the GazettE - バレッタ (Baretta) is one of the most OG solo works to ever exist lol (Solo starts at 3:11) but to name a few favorites: 蜉蝣 (Kagerou) - 腐った海で溺れかけている僕を救ってくれた君 (Kusatta Umi de Oborekakateiru Boku wo Sukutte Kureta Kimi) (Solo starts at 2:49) ayabie - 桜舞う季節に (Sakura Mau Kisetsu Ni) (Solo starts at 2:35) and surprisingly, An Café (but at that time they were known as アンティック-珈琲店 (Antic Café)) - Aurora (Solo starts at 2:19) and I gotta throw in my own fave from lynch. with their song "Fallen" (Solo starts at 1:43)
