  2. thanks to @Kelrya for enlightening me abt the fact mewithoutyou are dropping a new album, between that, the new Diru and the upcoming Clarence Clarity material the next couple of months are gonna be nnnnnnice af

  3. Anyone here ever got a headache / hurt their ears listening to VK? Not talking 'lol bad music hurrrr' here, I'm talking like 'music causing actual physical discomfort'. For me one band that seems to cause it is 12012 with their earliest material. Something about the production on their older releases just makes me feel uncomfortable, maybe it's that weird tin can-like filter over the vocals.

      If it's about loud masterings, all B. P. records catalogue from 2015 onwards. Kiryu's "Irodori" makes me regret liking them (not actually, maybe?). But I was about to make a joke about bad music ;-;

      Himeaimichu

Ironically for me, a lot of early Kiryu stuff rather than later Kiryu stuff. Mostly because their early stuff (especially on Shuugetsu Heika) were engineered with too much treble, and ripped in low quality.

DEG's Schwein no Isu, like all the Rammstein songs, bring more pain to my ears than whatever in my life... nothing has beaten that at all...

  6. lack.co's cover of mannequin is not good :( the other 2 cali gari covers are nice tho

      Elazmus

I agree, idk if mannequin was a good choice 😕

It kind of replaced all the WeIrD aNd ZaNy parts and made them edgy. They did a good job at adapting it to have two guitar parts, but this isn't my favorite version of the song.

    3. Tokage

      Tokage

honestly, the main problem with the Mannequin cover is just simply the fact that it's not weird and noisy enough compared to the original, something feels off about the energy

  7. someone should really make a vk version of this

    1. zombieparadise

      zombieparadise

This sounds like it was produced by Sakurai Ao and recorded on the set of Bob's Burgers.

    2. Tokage

      Tokage

i'm honestly completely unable to come up w/ any other bands that did the 'jazzy' sound as well as they did

    3. xriko

      xriko

I've never listened to Sugar, but I've saw More in live, the vocal was pretty good !

I also loved a lot Moran, which had 2 Sugar on it.

      Better try sugar !

  9. i feel like i've listened to like.. less than 10 albums that actually came out this year

    1. reminiscing2004

      I'm at 2. jaded forever

    2. Tokage

      Tokage

i don't know if i should  just blame it on the fact that this year seems rather lacking in terms of stuff i'm actually hype for (both in terms of Japanese music and just generally speaking) or if it's just because i've been digging into older stuff too much

    3. Tokage

      Tokage

but... this year genuinely does seem to somewhat be lacking in exciting new releases. 2016 and 2017 both had quite a fair amount of good stuff all over the world... i think i havent felt this disconnected from what's going on in the contemporary scene since like.. 2015

    3. Tokage

      Tokage

the genre crossover NOBODY expected, no idea that the other covers are though

  12. the worst shit is when a band says they're gonna be aiming for a more 'mature' sound on their next release and the end result is that you're stuck with an album consisting mainly of ballads instead

    1. Tokage

      Tokage

yeah i don't know exactly what's up with that whole ''mature'' = ''let's slow everything down'' approach either, i guess having any kind of energy at all is seen as juvenile or something? it doesn't really make sense

it's on the same level of red flag material as a band saying 'our next release will be a return to our roots!'

    2. WhirlingBlack

      WhirlingBlack

"return to our roots" should mean that they got lazy and just recycled some old scrapped demos from twenty years ago with some EQing on top. Would probably be a more interesting result.

    3. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

I hate this too. I'd take a "juvenile" sound over a "mature" one anyday. Just because you've been playing for so long doesn't mean you have to get rid of all your energy. Your music doesn't have to sound elderly and worn out

  15. Shuuji #1-era cali gari = the original Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Shuuji #2-era cali gari = that weird Dr. Caligari movie from 1989 w/ the penis arm and the giant mouth growing out of a wall

      zombieparadise

That's a tough one! I think I like them both equally.

These two bands have single-handedly revitalized my interest in 'newer' VK bands.
