Bands / Artists with unique sounds

Lab. / Lab the basement: is pure gold for me, since Ao is a beast of a composser, they sound like a more post-punk version of cali≠gari, and I don't want to compare both because they are in different games, but yeah both bands are awesome (I'm not comparing because @Tokage already speak of c≠g) Kagerou/蜉蝣: they were a HUGE game changer in the scene, they weren't the first doing awesome things in VK, but they do it very well, in one album you were going from pop to rock, from folk to metal, they were so awesome, a unique voice, an AWESOME work in the melody of the compossisions, one of a kind L'arc~en~ciel: maybe I'm just being nostalgic, but I think no one sound like them, even in the western, they are just unique, and like cali≠gari the side projects of the members aren't as good as their main band KYOKUTOU GIRL FRIEND: another one of a kind band, they weren't doing something new but like a lot of unique bands the blend of the musicians were awesome and they sound unique in a style that existed Kagrra,: the blend of traditional japanese music and rock, the voice of Isshi (R.I.P) for that reason they were huge in western audiences, something I haven't found in newer bands MERRY/メリー: again, the blend of the voice and the composition make a unique sound, making them the first band I really dig in, the guitar work (when first listened them I was learning guitar) is flawless, never heard something like that And pretty much any angura kei bands cof cof グルグル映畫館 -

Sena can read, write, and understand English pretty well but yeah he's too shy to speak it. Even when my Japanese was terrible he refused to speak to me in English, but he was always extremely patient with listening to me. He's a good dude. Never knew he studied in Seattle though ??? That's interesting That being said, if you write to him or speak to him in English he will understand. He's long gone but Roji (ex-XAA-XAA) is pretty good at English. He's not fluent but his listening comprehension is quite high and he can maintain conversations if he tries. He knows quite a bit of slang as well. I still wonder where he learned English. -
2 pointsMana (of Malice Mizer fame) speaks fluent English, but inexplicably has a very thick cockney accent

2 pointsYou from The Sound Bee HD speaks fairly good English and understands a lot. Though I've had very basic conversations with all the band. Hide-Zou from D speaks some English, and is actually a huge languages enthusiast, he's asked me to teach him Spanish. He has some certificate but idk which level and whether he renewed it or not (probably not) Sena from Jiluka allegedly knows English, he stated in an interview he studied in Seattle, but the shy fucker refuses to speak it (even though he told me "you can talk to me in English if you want" -.-)

1 pointI wanted to make a topic dedicated to the bands and artists in the Japanese music industry with a truly 'unique' sound of their own (within the sphere of the Japanese music industry anyway), ones that as of yet haven't been heavily imitated, homaged or whatever. This isn't just about the VK scene specifically, non-VK bands and artists are more than welcome as well. Still, I think it'd be interesting to first of all look at some VK acts that can be called relatively unique within the scene as well - so many people write off VK as a whole because of its supposedly homogeneous sound, but I feel like there's quite a few bands out there that definitely did do their own thing. Note that 'unique' doesn't necessarily have to equal 'good', so extremely bizarre examples of shit kei are also more than welcome I'll start off with a couple of examples of my own: cali≠gari: I honestly don't think I've ever stumbled upon all that many bands in the VK scene with a sound similar to these guys, at least none that weren't side-projects connected to any of the cali≠gari boys anyway. Although the 90s VK scene especially was pretty strongly influenced by music from both the Western and Eastern post-punk and goth scenes, I don't think all that many groups in the VK world ever did blend influences of post-punk, noise rock and synthpop quite the way they did. There's also this particular guitar tone Ao uses in quite many of their songs (I don't know exactly how to explain it, but this kind of 'scratchy' sound like in Hakkyou Channel) that I haven't really heard much in other VK bands. Schwarz Stein: Pretty clearly a bunch of odd ducks when you look at them within the context of their other goth-y peers. While they definitely still feel like they could be just your typical symphonic metal-influenced VK act if you just take their aesthetic at face value, their sound is something I've never really heard any other VK bands try to attempt, especially in that early '00s period before their hiatus, when quite a lot of bands were gradually starting to adapt to this more nu-metal / alt metal-influenced sound. Even nowadays in 2018 I think you can probably count the number of well-known acts with a sound like theirs on one hand.

JROCKERS AGES (facts and guesses)
monkeybanana4 reacted to Miku70 for a post in a topic
memna the bassist of tensai was born 2 th January 1997, you find this on his Twitter Hanabi one a guitarist of tensai was born 5th july 1996 , you find this here Naoya was born the other guitarist of tensai was born 1st april 1997, you find this here But I dont'know for Cult maybe he's the same age ( 20 or 22 years old) and the birth of Junia are unknown (and I know just him and Hanabi , they know each other since many years. ). Maybe he's the same age of Hanabi or he's more younger (18 or 20 years old). I don't know really ;-;. But yes they are really young. I read the same thing for him 😉. For Mamireta, I think the members are twenties and Karu is probably 26 ou 27 years old because Mamireta is not his first band ( it was FULL EFFECT' since 2010 or 2011 and to 2017). So it's very difficult >.<". -
1 pointMan, I love Sena tho. I'm glad he can read the dumb shit I write to him on Insta. 😂 Also, I don't know why or how, but when I met exist trace, Miko was speaking English really well. Like, really, really well. She's hella chill.

That's her ex-husband. She wasn't cheating. Personally, I don't believe she should be blamed for the abuse. The abuser (KISAKI) should be blamed for the abuse. Shame he got away with it, though. The epitome of "disappointed but not surprised" for me. I hope the child is getting the help required and doing better now. -
1 pointWhat makes me baffle is all this people believing in everything written in a forum where people are notorious known for trolling. Expecially the kyo parts, the guy was always a fucking hermit(there are pictures of him where the guy was the only one drinking soda in a sea of wasted fuckers, he also always gtfo as soon as the showd ends most of time) and you are believing things like he getting wasted and shoving arms inside school girls and trying to fight randoms in izakaiyas even though he is a fucking dwarf and probs would get brutalized. I cant deny that probably some things are true cuz there are a lot of vk guys who confirm these type of behaviour in parties in interviews( even kyo himself told he was made to do a lot of bs when he was a junior in those drinking parties.) But maybe it's true , i dont know cuz Kyo never shreded my clothes, told my woowoo smelled like rotten fish and robbed my empty wall after ravishing me. LOLOLOL

1 pointWell, I was only like half serious about that, but it isn't really such a far fetch theory. I don't live in Japan nor do I understand Japanese to be able to read Tanuki or any other sources that can be more factual but.. Take Taka from One Ok Rock as an example, even though he migrated from the Jpop industry (Johnny's Entertainment) of being an idol to being a JRocker, it is possible for VK artists themselves to think about migrating to Jpop/kpop/idol industry in general. (And also again, I don't know much about Kpop industry itself too but there have been more and more Japanese members in groups recently). But, I would think Jpop is a little more lax with idol training than, in Korea. Japan's idols (that debut) is that you watch them grow from being meh to being good, like you're an inspirational shit because from shit to good/awesome you become. Whilst in Korea, to debut you have to be exceptionally good. These are talent-wise mind you and not face wise yet. So let's say, in the VK industry older bands like Malice Mizer, Dir En Grey, X Japan, and Luna Sea are slowly starting to retire and let's admit it, they will sooner or later or else age will catch up to them. We have their predecessors like The Gazette, Alice Nine, and Nightmare. Bands that have been together for more than, 10 years but these people are also past their prime. 5 or so more years and they'll be like the first ones I mentioned. Where are their predecessors or roadies that became their kouhais? That they helped throughout? Most of them have disbanded and some are leaving the scene. I would take examples of bands like Screw, SuG, ViViD, and Born (note most of these are under the PSC labels because I tended to focus on them mostly before I left the VK fandom for a while a couple of years ago) Some of the members of those bands or other bands like them have left. Others are still continuing but, we're still seeing how they'll pull through. Now, with that information at hand, added with recent dramas/crime allegations and real VK artists that have been jailed, we now have newbie younger artists that may want to be part of the VK industry but, would find it rather hard to do so as senpais and labels would be harder to find. Not to mention that they did say in the earlier posts that the vertical hierarchy has been slowly fading (Prob because the older artists are retiring and such whilst others are still trying to recover from their disbandments and are off worrying about how their new band will survive the industry). Although, there are label companies that are owned by VK artists as well, I'm not sure of delving into that topic yet as I haven't researched about it yet. So with this in mind, there would be two ways a person can go with this. 1. If they're serious about their musician career in VK (like Anfiel maybe), it'd be harder with people flocking over the older bands because nostalgia and fear of them disbanding because of the recent trend of dissolutions from 2016-2017 or it'd be harder to make a name and find fans who will be into VK because of recent issues (like that Egoist and 12012 dudes killing their girlfriends or with the recent issue of Kisaki being a pedophile). 2. If they're not serious and are just in it for the money and sex, they would think its easier to migrate into the idol industry that has been gaining more and more attention the recent years. Not to mention, Jpop has been slowly catering to Kpop culture as well of aesthetics and face value, the only problem they would encounter there would be the strict dating rule, but then again many idols can get away with that if they try hard enough. (Also, I'm not saying being an idol is easier, because seriously the idol industry is more cut-throat that in the event you don't sell or don't have fans you will starve.) with VK you can have Mitsu's and Tsunagari's but, who's to say that idols can't have them too? Not sure, so will have to research further on that part. That's my take/theory on VK boys migrating into the idol industry lol and seriously, they might as well try their luck whilst they're young. The moment you're 20 when it comes to their industry, it'd be a whole lot harder to debut since, they prefer younger ones and think 20 is too old already to be an idol debuting. Please take this reply in only a very small tiny bit grain of salt cuz I just love making theories and shit about things and analzying things but, please remember that I do not live in Japan or Korea, nor do I understand/can read their languages lol

1 point@nekkichi is correct, and it is also important to consider the culture of the boards as well. Even in the English-speaking world, a report of rape or murder or suicide will be presented in a much different way on Twitter or Tumblr than on say, 4chan or Encyclopedia Dramatica. Tanuki/2ch are extremely blase and candid about sordid topics and sounding "self-pitying" (for lack of better words) would be extremely frowned upon given the board's culture. It is not a nice place. People mock suicide victims and eagerly discuss their desire to commit child abuse. While I understand the reports are just as unverifiable as anything else on Tanuki, it seems irresponsible to make judgments on what a woman's report on this type of thing "should sound like", especially for those who are not familiar with the posting culture & for those who haven't experienced or witnessed the societal and scene-specific issues mentioned in the post above.

1 pointI lived in Tokyo and went to all their local shows and many of the away ones too during their second period in the 2000s. Something that I think isn’t fully appreciated among international fans is just how unpopular and broke Lareine was during that time, and how desperately and passionately they worked despite the obstacles. But every concert was magical. It had to be. There was no reason to do it otherwise, and a million reasons to quit. It felt like borrowed time, and I was always so happy and grateful to be able to see them despite the bittersweet feeling they would have been better off doing something else. They always looked exhausted at events, rarely had new costumes, rarely even had new goods because I think they had trouble coming up with deposits. Cheki didn’t start to become a thing until late in their history (2005-ish?) when they’d already spent years grinding away with little return. I suspect the reason why they were able to put out as many releases as they did is because back during Lareine’s Sony days Kamijo invested in buying a bunch of his own production equipment. I think normally an indie band at that level wouldn’t have had those resources. But time to write and rehearse seemed like a scarce commodity too back then. There were times when Kamijo looked half dead. And every time Lareine did a little tour we could watch Kamijo perk up day by day, at the same time as us fans with normal lives were getting more and more tired as the tour went on. It always made me wonder what on earth kind of awful schedule he normally had in Tokyo, juggling the band and probably a part-time job, that going on tour would feel like a vacation to him. (Later on when I read Versailles interviews, they mentioned that Kamijo and Hizaki first met while working at Third Stage.) Unfortunately by 2003 Lareine was already perceived as old, out of date, and uncool. A ‘90s band. If they hadn’t paused in 2000 maybe things would have been different, maybe they could have built a solid base like Dir or Pierrot. But coming back in 2003 it was too late, the trends had already changed. Lareine had few fans back then, and it seemed like all of us were fans from before. I never met any Japanese fans who said they were new. (only international fans) Young VK fans didn’t care. Lareine wrote some of the currently trendy themes into their music in ways that were interesting instead of pure copy/paste, and us old fans had fun, but nobody else cared. They did some amazing experimental stuff on stage, and nobody saw it except us few old fans. To give you an idea of how young fans perceived them, there was a big outcry when Versailles was announced because people didn’t think a pansy weak vocalist with a thin high voice like Kamijo should be playing with awesome (but unknown) guitarists like Hizaki and Teru. They really got outraged when we heard Versailles was going to have a heavy sound. I got in a lot of arguments online at that time with people who clearly thought I was a delusional fangirl for saying that Kamijo’s voice is powerful enough to sing heavier music. In February 2006 Kazumi announced that he was leaving Lareine and retiring from music. I never blamed him, I was thankful that he had done his best to help bring us great music for so long despite the hardships. But this was really the beginning of the end. Lareine put out big ads in the major VK magazines looking for a new drummer, and they even went out of their way to explicitly write that they would take applications from anybody regardless of age or sex or nationality, as long as they could play and would love the band. I think that would be shocking to see in a band’s want ad even today, and this was in 2006 before the explosion of international tours had happened. But they weren’t able to find a drummer, and then during the summer Mayu vanished again. Honestly I can’t even blame Mayu either for wanting to quit under the circumstances, but it was terrible that he vanished without communication or warning. The Club Citta live they did in October was originally supposed to be a Halloween Party event live with multiple bands, not their last live. I went to as many of Kamijo’s anniversary tour dates as I could, since it was so special. The Tokyo final with everyone was amazing. So glad I went. p.s. “Drama” was so great live that to this day I can still half-hear the performance in my memory, even though they only played it twice in Sapporo in February 2006 before Kazumi left. It was so powerful. Kazumi and Emiru were much louder than on the studio version; this song actually has a really sexy rhythm when you can hear them. Mayu took the electric part instead of the acoustic one. They came together solid and strong booming on the beat in that last chorus on the song, Kamijo singing powerfully instead of gently, and hard on the beat like the others. I regret not bringing my MD recorder to Sapporo, but I never imagined that those 2 nights would be the last times we could enjoy Lareine normally.
