6 pointsEver listen to a song and think to yourself that you've heard that melody somewhere before, but you can never place it? Alternatively, have you ever gotten into or read an argument with someone who says "x band copied y melody from z band"? I'm sure all of us have been there at one point and this is a topic that personally interests me. I like knowing where my artists source their inspiration from, and where their inspirations got their inspiration from, etc., because I believe that no idea is original but the interpretation can be. The subjectivity in how different artists hear and play back certain melodies is what makes music beautiful! ...and then there are times when bands just steal melodies and put no effort into it. Today we take a look at six songs that can go either way. I provide examples, where I think their origins stem from, and my final judgement. Sometimes it's hero worship. Sometimes it's laziness. Sometimes I just don't know. A lot of this was sourced from the "Inspirations..." thread I started a few years ago, but I also did a bit of legwork the last few months to cobble together my own examples. If you see a track here you pointed out somewhere before, odds are you helped me make this list! Remember, these are only my opinions and based off what I can hear between two songs. I am not classically trained in music theory and I'm going purely by ear. You won't see me drop music theory knowledge anywhere in this post. "セラフ。" by KILLANETH stems from "DECADANCE - Counting Goats ... if I can't be yours -" by MEJIBRAY "go ahead" by girugämesh Homage or Copy: c-c-c-COPY...but every band has to start somewhere "The Summer Funeral" by SIGH stems from "Opening Theme ~ Bombing Mission" by Nobuo Uematsu Homage or Copy: Definitely a nod towards the veteran composer himself. "道化ノ華" by アルルカン (ARLEQUIN) stems from "zombie" by Versailles Homage or Copy: Smells like a copy to me but can go either way "Black Butterfly" by A stems from "Enter the Sandman" by Metallica Homage or Copy: Sounds like a copy to me. "Amentia" by E'm~grief~ stems from "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" by Dimmu Borgir "The Promise of Fever" by Cradle of Filth "Shat Out of Hell" by Cradle of Filth "Honey and Sulphur" by Cradle of Filth Homage or Copy: A shameless mix of three black metal riffs

First of all, thanks to @indigofor suggesting that we could revamp this thread just to see how old MH attendees have progressed with their tastes and simultaneously gather some new bunch to present their all-time choices inside this Japanese music spectrum. As the title says already, you will have a chance to use this topsters link (since original topsters links are dead) to create a chart representing your tier 1, 2, 3...choices, depending on how much you are able to compile in terms of your Japanese favorites. And for the sake of fairness and challenge (huh?), it would be preferable to post 1 ALBUM PER ARTIST - and of course, make sure to post your jpg/png here for us to see (hopefully this thread won't die soon) mine (very difficult one - also, fuck my 2012 self): (try to zoom or if you don't succeed, press ctrl and "+" together) They are somewhat in order but I placed my picks from tier 1 choices (constant, essential) to tier 4 choices (might change, but still very memorable and enjoyable) and spoilered titles (in order) below: -
3 pointson the 28th it was Rides In ReVellion's first one man live, which also conicides with their 1 year anniversary. due to my job, I get to see many great concerts, many of which are Rides In ReVellion due to the strong relationship between Rides In ReVellion and V STAR PROMOTION. but the live on the 28th was spectacular, the members put so much effort in preparation leading up to the live, and then twice as much during the actual live. and at the end of the night they announced that they will be playing in America in October! I can not express just how proud I am of this band. Picture taken by me.

No Dir en grey - Grieva or Gazette - Gossip comparsions ? Maybe that wouldve been too obvious/too much. Ha;qch's Edict totally agree, the problem is i like it way more than the original. But didnt know it copied more than just Elder Mysantropy, didnt know the TBDM other songs. On a sidenote, it would be interesting to list all J-Rock Songs with the typical/most common structure in 70% of all todays vk songs chorus with the guitar playing like this or a small alteration or which song/band started with that: e------------------------------------------------------- b------------------------------------------------------- g------------------------------------------------------- d---0-1-0-1-0-1-0-1-0-1-8-8-8-8-7-7-7-7- a---0-1-0-1-0-1-0-1-0-1-8-8-8-8-7-7-7-7- D---0-1-0-1-0-1-0-1-0-1-8-8-8-8-7-7-7-7-- (anyone knows what i mean with the guitar tab here?) Heavy parts in the low chord region going up to typically 8 followed by 7 power chord. Its so common it already feels necessary to me and if its missing some songs feel uncomplete (latest e.g. ARCHEMIs 崇拝 has the typically 0-1-3 stuff going on but misses the 8-7, which makes me feel something is missing listening to the song). VK is so predictable since few (a lot?) of years, listening to a new song the first time i feel like i can already tell the next riff before its even coming. Just a handful of bands makes an exception to that. -

Don't disagree with the ARLEQUIN one, but I do think that “zombie song” is just a visual kei trope at this point (a la “that one jazz song”), so they could be ripping off any number of people Off the top of my head, LIN's "Walking in the rain" (though that one came after Zombie), etc. (I think the trend probably started from Marilyn Manson's "Beautiful People," right?) Re: E'm, I had no idea that the rest of the song after the intro was stolen as well! Thanks for this thread hahaha -

You won't get the hang of the series without watching at least about 5 or 6 episodes. It's really misleading at the start because it needs to get into its flow, and it gets more intense and dark the further it goes. (If it's then still not your thing, I guess ReZero just isn't for you) But hell, it was the surprise of last season for me. I agree with what @Original Sakusaid up there^. It's such a fresh wind in-between most of the series with a similar theme. I absolutely love how "real" Subaru is. How he gets his ups and downs. How he has to face the backlash of things he started without thinking things through. How he realizes he's fucked, basically. Yes, there are definitely generic parts here and there but the main idea of the show, and Subaru's character development (greatly thanks to Kobayashi for voicing him so perfectly), are what keep me interested. If the novel readers' comments are any indication, it'll just continue to get better and better. -

I have yet to find the positive record of someone utilizing COMPREHENSIBLE, FLUENT english in vk anthems around here - and since it's all about the voice of the masses: "why would they sing a song in a language they are not familiar with" is a very lazy and lethargic excuse. 2) Sure, preferences vary whenever it's about Manson and/or Gaga influences feeding upon new Gazette but let's stop for a moment and ponder this: isn't it basically palatable that Gazette has been one of the few mainstream VK acts to actually "break" the stereotype of visual "backwardism" we've been witnessing throughout these years...could one even fathom the fact that we still have VK bands that look like 2016 but sound like 2009 quality AND mixing-wise? Come to think of it anyway - even these oyaji groups have been discovering ways to "get with the times", whereas VK indie scene is being infested with so-called "cool" kids and their ideas of dated melomaniac pleasure a la mid-00s VK revival with no "revolutionary" progression whatsoever? 3) I am not gonna touch "rubbish, terrible"-comments without any elaboration either. Perhaps Gazette is not your cup of tea? So what was your contribution in this discussion again? 4) - Wikipedia - Easily modifiable resource pages - Still cares about genre wankery - IN A GODDAMN VISUAL SCENE/FANBASE 5) So you are saying that cancerous fandoms are EXCLUSIVELY and SOLELY related to Gazette? Wew, lad. 6) Even the most eager critics tend to agree with the notion that Gazette has gained recognition due to their easily recognizable antics and almost "genderbending" tendencies - just like with other Japanese genrebenders inside and outside of our beloved visual scene. Why would possibly westernized individual care about symphonic power metal outfits like X or Versailles, low-budget mix flares of Kiryu and D, and stagnant animoo glory of Naitomea? As much as we would sympathize towards these acts as long-time VK weebs - is it really that hard to adopt opposite, "biased" views for a moment? Could you at least delve into details and convince our possible (albeit disinterested) non-VK (but yet Gazette-fanboying/girling) public that why these acts matter more in the context of international fanbase? I do admit that I had my on/off-times with Gazette for a decade already, but imho it's really hard to argue against the well-functionable, internationally palatable soundscape of mostly mashing Slipknot and Luna Sea influences together. In that sense Ruki and co. were smart enough to realize what exactly was relevant for those times aside from minding their own biases.

1 pointidgaf even if trombe hacked my bandomen sama's tsunagari's line accounts to get news, nothing he did is exceptional considering he's probably devoted most of his spare time to looking up obscure news no one gives a flying fuck about, and if you think he does it for the community, you're entirely deluded. trombe never gave a fuck about any of you or news, he did what he did to prove that he was good at breaking news and he enjoyed his rank as a result of that. once his power was taken away, he was visibly upset. never once was he co-operative with staff in letting others post news. think of a child who has a skill that they can do very well, they'll do all in their power to show their skill to anyone who pays attention--once they find someone who does what they can do but better, they'll either adjust their skillset to improve or just stop. and god forbid someone tells the child their skill isn't appreciated anymore--they'll freak the fuck out. i hate to go all creepy psychology on you, but this is the mental complex of someone who literally scours the web for obscure news and tries to oppress all others who stop him. this is why he would bitch biweekly about news that no one commented on, because there wasn't any altruistic intent. he needed attention, and if he didn't get it he'd threaten to leave. that resulted in the ass kissers on here rubbing his ego, and he probably looked at those posts, giggled in some creepy room full of computers, and continued to go on tapping bandomen manager's phones to find info about a session that maybe 4 japanese girls would ever care to attend

Last Concert You Went To (Now with Pics)

So last month I went to some VK shows in Japan. My first night in Tokyo I actually planned to just sleep (jetlag be damned!) because I had been awake for about 30 hours of airports and planes and was gross and tired. Fortunately, because it makes for a better story not that I wasn't cursing it in the moment, I arrived at the AirBNB apartment I was renting about 20 minutes before I was supposed to check in and my host was still cleaning it. So, I had to kill at least 20 minutes but since I was wandering back outside (at least I got to drop my bag off!) I decided to hit a concert nearby. I was staying near the Otsuka station in Ikebukuro. It was now 15 minutes to 5pm... and knowing how early these VK shows start I knew I'd have to pick something nearby to not miss a few bands. I could name three livehouses in Ikebukuro off the top of my head (who knows what important information has been pushed out of my brain by all this pointless VK minutiae.) Ikebukuro Chop had a few bands I'd never heard of playing, and I'm pretty sure Aie isn't in any of them. Ikebukuro Blackhole had a slew of bands, a couple of whom I'd heard of but not listened to.... but oh that show started at 4 not gonna work. Ikebukuro Edge has bands I've mostly heard of but never actually checked out any of them.... let's do that! I started at a different train station just ten minutes before the show was scheduled to start and still made it just before the first band went on! None of the bands at this show really wowed me, and it was a month ago at this point, so I don't think I could manage a very good fully fleshed out live report. But it also seemed a waste to have taken notes and not doing anything with them (and I love to read about concerts I can't go to from others)... so below you'll find my unedited notes (I didn't delete or add anything.... I don't even remember what some of the things I wrote mean at this point haha) from: 2016.5.31 Rivabook Presents 「Neo STARGATE」@ 池袋EDGE featuring: iNSOMNiA, Van9ish, Pisarro, Vexent, Salivan, Jack Caper, Piglow in Gloomy Insomnia - not a unique sound but at least are all in on it. Support drummer I assume, no makeup and tshirt. Didn't realize shitty VK shows would be literally 100% girls and me (and jeans are not the standard concert wear... only one other pair) Van9ish - I've been saying 'vanish' are they going for 'vanquish' ala Infi2ty? Doing that heavy/poppy arlequin/pentagon thing they're all doing. Vocalist laid on the 'me so crazy' a little too thick (writing all over him, possessed voice, that fucking maniacal laugh in every.single.song.) Stage right guitarist broke his B string in second song and didn't try to fix it. Could tell during a solo where he would've needed that string but he ad-libbed well enough. Cool ending, band all fell down and singer let out bloodcurdling scream as curtain closed. Pisarro - sound mostly the same. The bassist was having fun. Opened to members holding framed pictures of themselves (weird/narcissistic?) Vocalist screamed less and had pretty good vibrato. All seem a bitter older/mature... probably have been in other bands. Vexent - heavy/noisy. Had the most crowd participation. (Somebody's dad walked in between sets here) Salivan - guitarist had stuffed leopard on Ruki's wide-brimmed black hat. Michael Flatly dancing from vocalist. Technical difficulties... And singer definitely didn't want to have to fill the air for five minutes. Youngest. (Mobile game. Looked like host RPG on top... but had Bejeweled shit on bottom half.) Jack Caper (I think) - Thought they'd be darker... maybe because when I hear 'Jack Caper' I immediately think of Jack the Ripper. I actually left before the last band because, as I mentioned, I was freaking tired. Yes, I did not realize till afterward that the dude from Siva is now the vocalist of Pisarro... at least I was right about him being a scene vet. Fist of the North Star's Shuu (I am not writing that out as Shew) Jojo's Bizarre Adventure - Higashikata Josuke I included a picture of both figures out of the box so there would be a non-glaring box picture. I'll probably re-post them later. I really like that my Josuke figure has similar portions to my FotNS figures, so when I get more figures of both series, I can have "crack pairing" battles on my book shelves.
