  2. Eldorado managed to knock off every chord progression you could associate with old school Vkei, and I'm loving it

aula is a top-notch album, i remember loving it when it came out. scored a cheapo copy on Third Stage back in the day and was super psyched. haven't organically thought about this band in years, but now i'm tempted to give it a spin again.

  3. Remember when DIMLIM were the saviors of vkei?

  4. Finally deleting my Facebook after using it for 13 years. Can't believe I willingly gave so much information to a private corporation for almost half my life.

trying hard to remove myself from it as much as possible. still find myself engaging the "mindless scroll" of it all, but i don't enjoy it and it feels more habitual than anything, which i hate. i only keep it to be able to keep up with local music stuff/band promotion - otherwise, i'd be fine if it fell off entirely.

  5. Call me a n00b all you want, but when someone talks about 'mixing' making or breaking an album I am borderline retarded. I like what I like mmkay.

    1. nomemorial

      nomemorial

Mixing definitely makes a huge impact on the final product. A poor mix job can totally lose parts of songs and distort the way it's meant to be heard, a good mix job can change an entire record.

Not sure of any VK examples, but good examples in Western stuff are From First To Last's "Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count" which has two mixes that were released, the latter of which was done because the original was so poor (and the difference is really noticeable). The same can be said about the remixed/remastered version of Dance Gavin Dance's "Acceptance Speech," which straight up makes an "okay" album into a great one.

Not to say I don't understand your viewpoint - I think a lot of people miss the effect this process has on record-making - but when you can audibly hear the difference in the same songs, it really helps understand the impact!

  6. Tbh I think experiencing the entire album live has made me think very highly of the insulated world

    1. nomemorial

      nomemorial

I think the production on the album doesn't do it any favors. Feels really flat, guitars lack any significant punch, etc. I think I'd like it overall a lot more if it were produced differently, so I'm not surprised to hear it translates better live.

  7. Going to Japan for my very first time in February!
I'm trying to visit as much concerts as possible. I would be pleased if anyone has suggestions for some must-see-VK-acts . :)

      nomemorial

Congrats - you'll have a blast!! I only got to attend 2 lives during my time in Japan, but there were 8 acts at the second live so I felt like a got at least a solid taste.

Out of everyone I saw, I would argue the gulu gulu and MAMIRETA are absolute must-sees. Extremely high energy and fun from start to finish.

I would also include DIMLIM in this sentiment, but I don't know how they've been since losing 2 members so I can't confidently say either way. They were great when I saw them, though - very emotive, raw performance, especially compared to many of the other bands that played.

Past that, Hueye and MonstlloW impressed me a lot for newer bands so if you happen to catch them at a live you won't be disappointed.

      Have fun!!!

  8. Apple has now convinced me to buy an Android.

God the IPhone 11 looks ugly. The camera is the ugliest part about it

Been on Android since Note 7 (RIP) and haven't looked back since. My wife's iPhone gives her nothing but problems (gotta love planned obsolescence and Apple is truly the KING of the concept) and Apple's "security measures" are somehow overwhelming and entirely ineffective at the same time. On a Note 9 now and it's the best phone I've ever owned by a very large margin.

  9. The worst part about being a VK fan is that it’s not as well known. Finding another VK fan at your school is a rare occasion. I’m probably the only VK fan at my school lol.

    1. nomemorial

      nomemorial

I don't think I've ever naturally met another VK fan outside of maybe at an anime convention or something. I know people who know of Dir en grey, but not so much in the context of visual kei, rather just as a "crazy metal band."

  10. I'm playing a gig in two hours. I'm so scared, fuck! No matter how many times I played live, still can't avoid getting THE chills!😖😖😖

    May Toshiya be with me!💆🎸🎶

    Wish me luck!

  11. Ugh. I feel like a huge idiot for just trying to start drama. I honestly didn’t mean to. Oh well, I guess everyone hates me now lol

    1. nomemorial

      nomemorial

We've all made mistakes (especially on the internet, lol). No reason to jump on the "everyone hates me" train. It's a poor mindset that (whether you realize it or not) only serves to diminish your apology and negate your culpability. As was said above, take it as a learning point and it'll do you good.

I got into VK at a relatively young age and was, for the most part, pretty socially inept at the time. I look back on that part of my life with a fair bit of disappointment and disdain for the way that I acted and the way that I treated others, whether I realized it or not. I only reference this because much of what you're saying/doing here hits eerily close to home with the way I once was so, as someone who has maybe been in similar shoes, try to take my word for it - criticism is more often constructive than not and a community that is willing to accept you while calling you on your shit is worthwhile regardless of the fandom it's attached to.

More concisely said - no one hates you, dig what you dig, and don't dwell on your own mistakes - just learn, move on, and grow. 👍

  13. My ENTIRE job got to hear me listening to Lynch. the other day, my headphones came unplugged from my phone, and I work in a call center so it's quiet at night time, and I was so embarassed HAHA.

My supe laughed and said it was okay, it had happened to him before, too. And I guess it's pretty common, but I had it turned up super loud so I was all AHHHHHH when my headphones came loose haha.

I used to work in a similar environment and had "Touch My Body" by Mariah Carey as my ringtone as a joke for a weekend event with friends. Came back to work and for some reason forgot to put my phone on vibrate. Mid conversation with my supervisor (standing up in the middle of a cubicle row), my phone starts BLARING the chorus. Everyone stops talking, I just slowly reach down, turn the ringer off, and pretend nothing happened. No one spoke of it, thankfully.

nah - Animazement in North Carolina. grew up with that convention and it's kind of a "family reunion" for me at this point, but I just relocated (ironically back to North Carolina), but just can't in good conscience spend the money on it. 😰

  18. The Promised Neverland is one of  the most impressive, suspenseful Manga I've ever read.  This is one series where all 3 protagonists have ACTUAL depth and growth to them. Like holy shit Emma, Norman and Ray are the coolest.

  19. in the mood for some sort of bleak/dark/edgy/mature yadda yadda yadda anime, any reccs?

    1. nomemorial

      nomemorial

haven't finished it yet, but Shinsekai Yori fits the bill. ReZero is the best isekai show and also quite dark despite the cute characters at the forefront. Devilman Crybaby is all of this, too, if you haven't seen it.

  20. back to my "please help with Japan!!" questions...

anyone got general recommendations for cool/off-the-wall stuff to do in Tokyo?

I'm putting together an itinerary right now, but it's my first time and I'm trying to find stuff that my wife and I can enjoy together (because really it's all eating and exploration now, haha)

  22. stupid question, but I don't speak Japanese and translate doesn't really help me understand this...

what does 後日解禁バンド  mean? they're listed as an act on a live I'm attending and I thought it was an act I was unfamiliar with, but now I'm not sure...

when I purchased tickets I was like "hmm, maybe some session or something" but then I googled now and realized it listed on a lot of lives, so your answer makes sense and I feel like a dummy. curious who could still be announced then...

      thank you for clarification!

regarding Aster, there is a band called "GLEN" that appears to have formed recently with a single being released called "Aster" in May? they show their first live is scheduled for 5/27, though, so not sure if there's any relation.

      🤔
