  1. Could I ask for some help from those who speak Japanese? How do you translate this sentence into English? 一人きり泣いてた私へのシンフォニア

I know what it says, but I feel the first part is a relative clause and I fail to connect it in a natural way with シンフォニア. Thanks.

      cvltic

It's very hard to deal with relative clauses like this in a natural way in something like lyrics because as I'm sure you know English has a much lower tolerance for them and "which" "that" "who" type words.
Let's first assume the missing predicate here is です and thus the meaning is 一人きり泣いてた私へのシンフォニアです。 and not anything more complex.

There's a couple of strategies you can consider in this case:
      1) Changing the form. Adjectives would work much better in English.
"A symphonia for my lonesome weeping self" or some such

      2) Flouting conventional sentence structure. For something like lyrics you can get away with dodging these kinds of dilemmas with punctuation...
"A symphonia for me, weeping all alone" or some such
This adds ambiguity but that's not necessarily a bad thing in lyric translations imo

But, since the predicate is missing, you could assume there's a more complex predicate based on your interpretation of the song. Here's one I  just pulled out of my ass without reading the rest of the lyrics.
      一人きり泣いてた私へのシンフォニアが流れてきた。
"I was weeping by my lonesome when a symphonia for me started to play (alt: symphonia started to play for me)" or some such
Yes, the translation "breaks" the original sentence structure which tends to scare some translators, but if it doesn't destroy the elements with meaning I don't really think it's a problem; 1:1 translation is near impossible with poetic Japanese. Leaning towards liberal translation in lyrics/poems can often produce a better final product in the target language.

Hopefully this at least helps you consider your options.

"Sinfornia for me who was crying all alone !"
Somehow you think as " a music for a crying person " , and the person is " me ".

  2. Wondering if there are any lives where Kagrra played Kisen...

    1. saishuu

      saishuu

None that were released as DVDs, I believe, which is unfortunate. ):

    2. seikun

      seikun

The song is awesome and with a bit of technology they could have recreated the song visually on a screen as the band plays.

    3. saishuu

      saishuu

Kisen is such an underrated gem from [gozen]. I would've loved to watch it live as well.

They have so many stuff they never released in live DVDs, it used to infuriate me back then lol

  3. Do my ears fail me? When I listen to Salvation by The Cranberries, I hear "Tie your kids unto their beds..." but the lyrics I found on the net say "Tie your kids home to their beds". However, when I read Dolores' lips I don't see her say "home".

    1. nekkichi

      nekkichi

you could look up their live recordings and see if it gets more clear in concert, but enunciation was never her strong point (neither were vocals themselves or lyrics, but that one was particularly awf.)

    2. seikun

      seikun

I'm not a native English speaker so the song is a bit of a challenge in some parts, but you can watch the music video on Youtube and read her lips; It sounds and looks like "unto" to me; not "home".

    3. nekkichi

      nekkichi

I think it's just her pronunciation of home as "aum"

  4. Has anybody ever listened to the band DOZΣ? Ex-Due le quartz, Sakito was the vocalist and someone from Dollismarry was also a member too. I would love to listen to this band.

  6. A little question, how do you say "don't tempt me" in Japanese? Temptation as when being seduced/enticed by someone. Thanks.

    1. cvltic

      cvltic

straight up "don't tempt [me]" translation from rude to less rude
      誘惑すんな
      誘惑するな
      誘惑しないで(よ)

"no tempting allowed" - slightly more playful sounding
      誘惑はダメだ(よ)
      誘惑しちゃダメだ(よ)

i can't let myself get tempted/lose to temptation
      誘惑されちゃダメだ(よ)
      誘惑に負けちゃダメだ(よ)

      seikun

Wow, so detailed. I was having problems constructing the sentece as it was always in my mind the "me" part. Thank you very much, @cvltic

Are you asking about 誘惑, @platy ? It is read as "yuuwaku" (ゆうわく).

  7. Now, it's 10 years since DOREMIdan released Rollover seishun and the PV remains impossible to find. It will become and unwatched legend.

    3. seikun

      seikun

That release is surrounded by mystery. They announced it with a preview on Youtube back in 2008 and you could see some of the PV, but after a time the preview was removed. Today you can still find it on Nico Douga. As for the PV itself, it looks like it was never officially released. I can only find the maxi-single without the PV for sale.

  8. Is there something wrong with Yunisan lately? It's the best site to keep track of old Visual Kei bands but now I can't find some bands. I could swear NéiL's discography was there before.

    1. Tanishi

      Tanishi

It works if you access the band's page through googling band name +yunisan (at least for me). The main list page doesn't work though.

    2. Seelentau

      Seelentau

Some band pages don't work, others do. There was a short talk in the MH chat about it recently.

Other than that, I can only recommend vk.gy as an alternative. :]

      I see.

That is the best site to check old VK bands' discographies. I need it!

  9. Miyavi back to a Visual Kei-ish look?

They try to pull it off when they seek mainstream acceptance to appear mature, but when they grow up the see there is nothing wrong with looking different.

  10. Could someone help me out with this Japanese?

    かすれた声に凍えた手で
    空を掴むように求めてた

It's from SectMateria's Cyanosis. I think I understand the basic idea...; him looking for a way to seize the sky with his frozen hand(s), but the かすれた声に凍えた part has me all complicated because I don't know it fits in logically. I know 凍える is an intransitive verb but it looks as if it were saying something like "with my hands that froze the husky voice", but intransitive verbs don't have an object they affect. かすれた声に is such a challenge. I'm lost here >.<

    1. JRD

      JRD

My interpretation is: with my faint voice and frozen hands; I desire to reach for the skies.

    2. plastic_rainbow

      plastic_rainbow

i think it can also be interpreted as "with these frozen hands on my husky/faint voice", just my opinion. haven't listened to these guys in a while btw. i remember liking this song.

    3. seikun

      seikun

The problem is how かすれた声に is affected by 凍えた or what its relationship with 凍える is because 凍える is an intransitive verb so it doesn't an object. に is supposed to be used when expressing the indirect object but still, with my poor Japanese that doesn't seem to make sense either.

    2. seikun

      seikun

That's from 2011 so we haven't heard of him in a long time. The rumour of sex change was at the back of my mind now that I read those comments. He's like another Klaha by now.

    3. Ada Suilen

      Ada Suilen

Yeah! I miss both of them... :-(

  12. Does anybody know what もと means here in Seraph by Malice Mizer? According to Jisho.org it means origin, source but doesn't make sense here, at least to me.

  14. Hairstyles in today's Visual Kei are so unappealing. It's like the Japanese have lost their disticntive  sense of aesthetics and beauty.

    1. nekkichi

      nekkichi

I'm actually pretty relieved they weren't fucked up by k-pop trends that much (a few bandomen here and there aside)

    2. Zeus

      Zeus

as far as aesthetics in vk go i have noticed a trend towards group shots, photoshop, and focusing on the scenery as well as band members. old 90's photoshoots kept it simple + no photoshop  so the artists had to grab your attention more with distinctive hairstyles and lots of make-up. i can always be wrong tho.

  15. Is it true that the Yakuza also have their hands on Visual Kei? If so, why?

  16. Listening to Nami tamaki's Believe is making me really nostalgic. I can't believe it's 12 years since I watched her vid on TV, recorded it on tape and showed it to my mom. I feel like it was yesterday. Time is a cruel thing.
