  1. ^Or they could as well contribute to revivals of other glam bastardizing scenes, e.g. "love metal " which were sorta tailored to be played by their ilk:

    Spoiler

Two first embeds (Lovex and Negative) used to be Japanese favorites btw.

  2. My deviating picks with rather subtle descriptions...

New Chatmonchy sounds...nicely Chatmonchy-ish. I can hear some older Pillows here though, which is also fun.

Hands down one of the best "Lantis-core" acts comes up again with sugarsweet but not that clichey half-ballad A-side.

Say what you want about Akai Kou'en - their guitarwork was always fascinating to me no matter how otherwise predictable the overall picture may seemed to be. Sometimes I am very picky about entirety, but anything Kouen riffage kinda makes me forgive it in an instant, lol.

honest question - bc BatAAr & Disreign are brought up a lot here, what do y'all think of Die/May's latest track?
i thought the vocal melody of the chorus was pretty impressive & wouldn't sound out of place from some recent indiez band from japan, but am i the only one who thinks that?

i'm really not /as/ into the heavier side of vk so a lot of these western bands aren't aiming for the kind of sound that's my fav to begin with, but i thought that track's chorus at least is moving the band in a good direction.

The vocal melody did not deviate at all from  nordic (especially Finnish) indie rock/pop conventions - whether there were *actually* good growls or so.

And Riotcolor is pretty much just another love metal-tier vocalist from our genericville. Sad!

I know but I think Japanese is his native language no?

No (AFAIK his family is Italian and he was born there too, so no natural born ties to Japan whatsoever - mostly interest-based)

I see a whole lot of noise about languages and whether they matter in VK and elsewhere - pro-tip: it's all about the context.

Genres often endorsed by Mejibray and alikes as a case in point are no different whether you convert them into piglatin or Russian or pretty much any other language off your Asian endorsement charts: these are the so-called "normalized/neutral household genres". However, musical touches often favored by Kayoukyoku/actually Japanese-oriented music-loving collectives akin to D=OUT or MERRY pretty much require Japanese lexicon to be present in your singing or else you would be met with tons of justified criticism towards dissonance you caused between accompaniment and  stereotypical, "oppressive vocal delivery". The latter is rather frequent but there are ofc means how to change opinions for better though - as long as you assess exactly what is going on with Royal Road-progressions, syllabic specifics, lyrical conventions, rhyming, "good ol' practices" etc.

Aforementioned VK acts have done their homework for sure and realize what might be the "no. 1 Nippon best practices" - the question is, have these western Tokyo-stanning weeaboos done the same homework?

Different cultural milieus were present during their musical development, "good practices" were understood differently and their bandwagoning is far more reckless. So call it simply "NO".

Therefore, linguistic issues won't matter that much - as long as you don't blindly keep cockriding on tacky lexical and musical cliches blasted in your VK household favs, which is what YOHIO keeps doing with DISREIGN. If you are far more versatile in your own spoken AND musical language, perhaps that's the exact language you have "much better ear" in instead of your biases' bandwagon languages. For the sake of relevance, Bataar and especially Patrik have no idea of what kind of "musical language" suits them well - nor do their adopted conventions convince that much because it reeks of fuccboi bandwagoning...

Frankly enough I have some relatives from Omaha too so at times I low-key  use their local -isms in English when describing things like these "pickle cards" or generally just "pull tabs" (I think MN people know this one), i guess...

OP has it totally backwards. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the PIERROT ojis are only getting back together for the coin since none of their solo projects have ever been huge, but it is definitely Dir's ojis that will be making coin off of PIERROT's appearance.  Last time PIERROT did a reunion live they filled most of Saitama Super Arena (15,000-20,000 people). By comparison, Dir tops out every year at Studio Coast (abt 2,500 people).

I personally wouldn't be going if it wasn't a PIERROT collab. (And I normally would go with my husband, but he was like fvck that cuz he doesn't want to sit thru Dir.) I wish it was just PIERROT but hey I'm happy at any chance to see them perform again. At the reunion live Kirito made it pretty clear during his MCs that they weren't sure if they'd ever do another performance together in the future.

Whelp, at least after this I'll be able to say I've seen Dir en grey live. Hope they do some old stuff tho since I can't stand much of their discography beyond Vulgar. A little while ago they had the music advert trucks going around Tokyo but I wasn't in the area so no clue what the collab sounds like yet.

Since you seem to be one of those tonberry-era folks around herre, lemme ask you something:

Did Pierrot gain much bigger following even during their final days and after that than Dir? AFAIK Pierrot's fame boost (over Dir that is) was just temporary and if we inspect the overall picture, Dir seemed to do much better promotion-wise, or is there something I missed out on?

  8. Holy heck Patrik has gone full retard...

Help this poor soul...kaisan his career, give this man another shot to become much better salaryman in the future...

  9. @Euthanasia@Zeus@AimiGen7I forgot to touch his post-Kuroyume 2009 reunion days so gomen for forgetting about details you pointed out there guys. Yes, he did cheat and there has been some sort of strong netizen opposition aimed against him afterwards which led to his temporary account changes and other specific promotions - can't remember much about that scandal though.

I and my nihongo comprehension might be even rustier at this point, but didn't Hitoki confess (thru twitter, momentarily that is) he had been given no position nor voice to use against Kiyoharu's late trademark decisions ("Avex-Kiyoharu"-scenario)  - he was in the band too, no? @sads123or maybe another Kiyoharu/Kuroyume fan might know better if that legit statement took place a few days after Kiyoharu's tax failure leaks.

Not worth emphasizing among other dirty bandomen as @Zeusresponded already, but worth mentioning anyway. God knows if SADS bassist suddenly refusing to meet Kiyoharu and co. and departing was related to Kiyo being an egocentric diva with pickle cards in his pockets...

  10. One could care less about otherwise very carefree, condescending attitudes/lifestyles that most of these bandomen exhibit but let's talk about more significant, large-scale effects here - i.e. things that have impacted songwriting/production heavily AND permanently later on.

Kisaki is quite obvious but even so, I think Tommy has the most notorious, and notable backstory here if we follow aforementioned criteria. Come to think of it, there is a clear negative association with him in an instant whenever there are label talks with his "foster children", i.e. Dir members or even 12012 until they decided to cut their ties or idk. We might never know how much of illegal shite has been done (e.g. 2007 case) to keep his poster boys relevant in the eyes of Nipponjins and gaijins.

Literally the Don Corleone of visual kei - with Kisaki being "lesser evil" per se.

And since it's all the rage for us to sneer at rockstars for doing "the hard stuff": Kiyoharu did hard drugs too yet he has tons of dedicated stans and 0% media judgement. Go figure.

  11. Varmaan toistan itseäni turhaan, mutta juuri tommoiset todennäköiset heikit ja tuomakset feimiurineen ovat yksi kolmesta syystä minkä takia jätän (ilomielin) mökkiävellismin parkuryyppynostalgisoinnit välistä .

Vaikka toki suomi-monochromiumeja tulee hiiirrrrrrmu ikävä tbqh </3

  12. When I see these people often stating that "yay when I grow up and bear kids, I shall make them listen to my vk muzak", I often think whether that feels too forced and perhaps hindering with regards to unique development of your own children. I am not considering any grandiose family prospects per se but seeing these 2010s families with parents of my own age, what are their attitudes towards raising their kids etc. irks me a bit.

Just provide and explain options to your brats, encourage openness etc. Forcing your own interests (exclusively), especially those of VK-like proportions, will merely damage their own unique perception, viewpoints they will abide to in the later course.

This is also my main argument against most families kickstarting their infant-bearing days right in their early 20s - when they (more likely) have no fricking idea how to encourage growth, one's mental development, responsibility for fuck's sake. Give it some time lads...

Fortunately enough this is MH and not Reddit where these weeaboo moms and dads fail to test their wits over my statements above.

I actually have a physical copy of Kyo's first book, just need the second one with "mama". :)

Regarding the TMNS demo tape, yes, that's what I'm looking for. I've never seen it ripped anywhere, some dude on batsu had it back in the day but I can't register an account there.

It's one of the most rarest releases, along with the message tapes, DEG live in Hongkong, the GAUZE promo LP and some other stuff.

Oh and Sea of Retards is a hoax, I know that much. :P

And I still don't know who the person on that picture is. Is it Kisaki or who? :D

If you read exactly what I wrote: the TMNS demo tape song you are looking for is the first embed link I posted - except it's without vocals (also called "Kiyomizudera"). What's the fun in listening to lo-fi instrumental versions of already available songs?

Yeah, I really like the old stuff. On that note, do you guys have any rare stuff to share? I'm pretty sure I have almost everything they have ever released, but just in case...? Maybe the TWO MONSTROUS NUCLEAR STOCKPILES song? :3

    ?

Also, Kyo's first poem book had another TMNS song which they did not publish as a separate release:

(Kaoru penned this too with Merry's Yuu)

The only available TMNS demo-tape basically has this one without vocals.

Also: kudos to Kaoru for that obvious Discharge reference.

     As I said... ^^

One for the middle part and then three more to mirror the first three. So no mode of MISSA/GAUZE/ARCHE. :(

And the title for WtD will be "TOUR16-17 FROM DEPRESSION TO ________ [mode of Withering to death.]", why do you think that looks weird, Carmelzors?

    1) MISSA is just a mini and there isn't much to perform there anymore except for maybe GARDEN which they might leave for their grande finale.

    2) GAUZE DVD was not released as a part of the whole mode of...rumble because it was initially meant to commemorate their 15th major anniversary, whereas  later mode of...legs commemorate their 20th band anniversary.

    3) ARCHE is a retrospective album and had 2-3 legs before the whole anniversary thing. Consider it as an "anniversary gift" if you will

  16. ^Perhaps they are anticipating GARUUUUDANNN...I mean, Garden?

Once they start playing it, everyone will be pretty much set with the whole MISSA thing and  forget about songs like Erode and original Kiri to Mayu....S was performed already, right?

^ Actually, it seems like it's gonna be a hexagram, haha.

Also, by the looks of it I'm assuming there will be more than 3 DVDs coming. I'm thinking 4 or 5. Otherwise the circular shape would be pretty fucked up, lol.

This leaves UROBOROS, MOAB, MACABRE and possibly  WtD mode DVDs to be released in the long run. So I suppose 4 more DVDs should complete the "easter egg"?

I wonder about possible titling for WtD-themed leg though - "Mode of...Withering to death." just does not look right tbqh.

  18. I may have already cited these things elsewhere but to make up for possibly farfetched statements about ripoffs and all that shite, I will disclose what I found out about non-Dir album/song lyric references...by Dir en grey of course:

Reference 1: Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes (2012)

Where: "Revelation of Mankind" (2014), the last line screamed by Kyo

Coincidence or purely legit: Dir stans know that Kaoru "took the wheel" for penning and/or directing the most of ARCHE's songwriting process (credits are somewhere there, in our MH archives). Frankly enough, he also happens to be the most diverse person taste-wise, incl. downright admitting he is not always all about that metal and rock stuff - FlyLo is one of his fav "chill" artists as a case in point. So it is safe to say this is purely legit.

Reference 2: Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow (2009) - "More of Fire than Blood"

Where: "Yokusou..." a.k.a DREAMBOX (2011), the slow growly part by Kyo during the 2nd freakout

Coincidence or purely legit: firstly, thanks @Jigsaw9for your tip! I tried quite hard to find and confirm whether Anaal Nathrakh came up with this title by themselves or were they inspired by specific title in literature, movies etc., but I could barely find anything similar to this phrase/titling before Anaal's said album. I have no proof nor interview-related reference which may 100% clarify that either Kaoru, Kyo or someone else  is into grim stuff akin to Anaal. They are somewhat industrial-oriented too, no? The title itself does not sound like something Kyo could just accidentally generate through his Yahoo translator or idk. 50/50, I think.

Reference 3: Billy Talent - Billy Talent II (2006) - "Devil in a Midnight Mass"

Where: "Gaika..." (2008), outro/breakdown - the last line screamed by Kyo.

Coincidence or purely legit: So far I've found out that the only event connecting them in the past was the Taste of Chaos tour around the same time when Dir met their midlife crisis in the wake of their 10th anniversary and American roundabout hassling.  Calling 50/50 'coz I just have no other idea... their influence might be plausible though!

Edit: the more I google their oddly "coherent" English lines from MOAB/UROBOROS songs, the more metalcore results I get from YT for some reason...

  19. Kyotakumrau's report off that Sendai gig makes me even more intrigued about possibly upcoming mode of MOAB - DVD if anything:

I arrived at the venue little past 5, but I could still get everything I wanted, only white shirt was sold out today.
Staff was late with letting fans in by over 15mins… it was cold. But when inside I immediately liked the venue - stage was quite high and it felt quite wide as well, I think it must have been easy to see wherever you were.
I started with an early 100s number so I got a nice spot in the 3rd row in front of Kyo’s box, on the left side of the barrier.

From SE video I remember some forest, a creepy doll covered with blood, dodgy corridor, people, child’s drawings and writing ‘i will fuck your …’.
Band came on stage in usual order: Shinya, Die, Toshiya, Kaoru and when other members were ready to play they were soon followed by Kyo.
Didn’t notice that much about other members, sorry. Toshiya had much shorter hair, chin length, it looks very fresh, he wore a jacket that he took off later at some point (as my friend told me). Kaoru had also short hair (actually their hair is similar length but Toshiya’s all sleek).

Kyo’s outfit should get a separate entry (probably it will). He had a very nice collar, leather straps, loose shirt that was showing his shoulders and upper back - and it was all connected as one piece. On top of that he wore some chains and he also had other accessories. He had strong make up, that really made his eyes look bigger and had 3 dots between his eyebrows. His hair was spiked and he’s back to a very irregular length, mostly staright line fringe with longer bits. He also had a white mask attached to the back of his neck, but he never used it during the show.

Set started with some good energy and fans could join a lot. At first band members mostly stayed in their areas on stage (but don’t quote me about other members xD).
During Phenomenon, when Kyo was dancing a bit, I thought that it really is one of those songs that seem quiet, but it’s hard to stay still when you listen to them.

During most longer breaks between songs we stayed quiet as the atmosphere was like that, but there was one that turned into a very lively competition which band member gets loudest fans screaming for them ;)

I liked ballads and the sad and quiet that came with them. That moment in namamekashiki when all sounds stop and suddenly they return, they used light so perfectly then, giving us sudden shower of light but it was followed by a dim light.

I liked heavier and faster songs when we could join them more. I mentioned before that I really love fans’ participation and tonight it was so good! All those perfect timed bits ‘parasite, children of hatred’, 'headless body, i say destrot fuck off’… it’s always a dialogue with Kyo. In DISABLED COMPLEXES he came to the edge of the stage to watch fans when we sang 'psycho killer’ for him.

Fun bit (maybe? an interesting bit?) - Kyo sang many parts of Aoi Tsuki while looking at the lyrics sheet next to his box… I feel some fans remembered those lyrics better and could join him in all right places without any problem ;)
When fans sang ’~nozomu’ in responce to Kyo during Byoshin it made him quite pleased. He was headbanding really hard with this song too!
Utafumi is super fun live, there’s so much going on and we get to participate so much!!

We got a nice heated up calling to crowd as well.
'Are you still there? Can you go on? Sendai!
Guys!!! Ooooo ~toooooooooo~kooooo!!!! Can you go on?
Girls!!! Are you still there? ON ~ NAAAAA!!! Can you go on?
Can you fucking give me more??? Can we become one? Can you become one with us????’

After Hageshisa Kyo took 2 bottles from his place by the drumset and came to the front, he started to spray fans, first in the middle, then he moved to the left and once he emptied his bottle he took a swing as in to throw it to the fans. BUT. As he took that swing he threw the bottle to the back of the stage giving fans a winning smile ;) Very happy he opened his second bottle and started spraying fans again, this time moving to the right from the center. And he repeated his joyful fun of throwing the bottle away from fans. On purpose. Oh that little grin ;)
He gave us one last glance before starting to clap while walking off the stage.

The rest of the band threw their pics, drumsricks and scrunchies, towels, beer and water bottles etc. Special thank you to Toshiya for throwing his towel to the area where I had the luck to be ;)

I’m very curious about the setlist tomorrow. And I expect an even better energy, as we are all just warming up, fans and the band!!

It's like they were AWARE of the most memorable, "meme-able" things in the overseas/domestic fanbase based on that SE clip description alone, lol.

  20. ^It's just a couple of cases, hon.

I might as well bet on drugs (considering the latest trends, "WEED LMAO") or just some random misorderly conduct because rape cases get easily and quickly leaked to the public if anything.

Reminder: never go full DQN, bandoman-sama.
