  1. Wow, one day you are buying five editions of their cd's to get every song, the next they are disbanding...

At least they are going out in true V Neu style by making me spend money on a live limited release...

I dont usually listen to this side of VK that much, but they were a good band, especially with songs like Mousou Kiss, GoGo, etc...

    WRITE-UP:

    INTRO:

The latest album by ALSDEAD, featuring the debut of their new drummer NIKKY (ex. GALEYD), and another obligatory change in their overall sound, feel, and direction.

An album that feels much more 'complete' than its contemporaries, with a solid feel and delivery throughout, providing another replay-button-friendly experience to my library.

    THE SOUND:

As similar to previous albums as it is different, they have kept the hard edge to their sound, while putting more emphasis on the individual instruments, and made the vocals fit in more as not necessarily leading the track, with melodies that are still strong and memorable, but do not rise above the value put on the guitars, or other instruments.

The signature cinematic ALSDEAD synth sound is back, with an even higher quality than ever. They definitely distinguish themselves as having some of the best synth's today, with more tracks that allow you to pleasurably follow the synth all the way through, and simply enjoy the unique tone, melodic value, and refined nature of production surrounding them. To me, the usual sign of having great tone is having notes that sound not as if they are coming from an instrument, and aren't registered by the listener simply as strings being picked, or keys being pressed on a keyboard, and ALSDEAD definitely accomplishes this on IDEA

    THE FEEL:

The tracks STARLESS and KILL THE KING should give you a starting point of what this album will sound like. It wavers in both directions: Softer with more synths, and harder with more grit and rough guitar. It is atmospheric, yet still comes off as a track-by-track experience, based on emotional expositions, raw emotions put into words that are either carefully articulated in Picture, or rudely shouted in D.9.N.

It's emotional, atmoshperic rock-music storytelling that is delivered not with sap and melodrama, but with attitude.

HOW IT STACKS UP TO PREVIOUS ALSDEAD ALBUMS:

If you have been following them, you have probably noticed that each album marks the end of one term in ALSDEAD's sonic history, and begets another. Their debut had an emphasis on heavy emotions, bad mental states, and a wailing, dramatic sound to match this. MODALITY felt like a series of short stories, with more of a straight-forward rock feel. Seperator felt like one long, interconnected story with a deeply atmospheric feel, and dark, sleepy nature to it in between harder songs.

IDEA almost feels like it mixes all of these elements together, while adding in some hard rock, some soft ballad elements, and some 90's rock mechanisms.

In terms of overall experience and enjoyment, I think after the initial adjustment to your expectations, and the fact that it doesn't sound exactly like older ALSDEAD, it holds up very well as another great entry into their library.

    Track Count: 13

    Listens: 20-25

    Production Quality:  :4.5:

Overall Rating: :5.0:(This rating took some time to think over, as my first impression was of a 4.0, then built up to a 4.5 after about 20 listens, yet if I go with my gut, and realize how every track on this album hits home with me, and how much I am now enjoying it, I have to give it a 5.0)

    Worth the Purchase?

If you have enjoyed their singles since Seperator, and have been a fan in general for any of their past releases, I highly recommend this. A solid album throughout, that shows no signs of inserted filler. The tracks are all solid, none get left behind in memory, each one brings something to the table, and overall this is a stand-out album that brings a lot to the table.

  5. Hey guys,

I was wondering how you store all your stuff, what kind of stuff have you amassed, what you do with it, and how you feel about it.

    Categories:

    Physical Music (CD`s, Tapes, Records)

    Physical Videos (Blu-ray, DVD, VHS)

Digital Music (iTunes, Google, rekochoku, downloads, etc...)

Physical Goods (Clothing, Obi, Posters, Cheki, Bonuses like photo`s, etc...)

    Other Stuff You Collect

    Summary

    -----

    Me:

    Physical Music (CD`s, Tapes, Records)

Almost all my stuff is cd`s, I keep some on shelves, many in boxes, and have some in the living room if they are often played. I don`t like keeping much stuff in my room, so it is almost all in one of my spare bed-rooms. Ultimately I would like to have it all on nice shelves which actually suit the size of cd`s (CD racks are too small, would have to have tons, and regular shelves like I have are too big in terms of extra space above the cd`s.

    Physical Videos (Blu-ray, DVD, VHS)

Don`t collect many videos as I never watch them, only have an assortment of some of my favorite concerts or PV collections, keep them on a shelf if I really like them, otherwise in boxes.

Digital Music (iTunes, Google, rekochoku, downloads, etc...)

This is what bugs me the most, as I never use iTunes but have some music from there, and since my music library isn`t in iTunes, it doesn`t really feel like I have the music? Also, my digital files and rips are all stored on an external drive, feels unsafe and unofficial. Otherwise I keep the music I listen to on my phone (40 gigs, I want to get a new phone with at least 128gig storage, but my phone is still working).

Physical Goods (Clothing, Obi, Posters, Cheki, Bonuses like photo`s, etc...)

I don`t have clothing as it is always too small, Obi I keep in shoe boxes, I don`t know why I can`t throw them out, but I will literally never use them for anything or even look at them...

The closet in my guest bed-room is full of rolled up Posters, I have tons, but again, never put them up...

Cheki I only have a couple, I like them a lot, for sentimental value, keep them in a special shoe box, with bonuses from orders or in-store events.

My favorite things are probably the Cheki from live-events, any signed stuff, and the towel I have from UNiTE / DOG.

    Other Stuff You Collect

I have movies, DVD and Blu-ray, and a lot of games for different systems, about 100 are on a shelf, but the others get the box treatment as well. Have some books on a shelf, all the others and all my old manga are at another place.

    Summary:

So yeah, in summary, the way I store my stuff is pretty terrible, I throw it all in a room, and I am uncomfortable with all my digital stuff`s existence. I am thinking that in my next house I will make a media room, with nice shelves, posters up, and everything organized nicely. That is in the future though, so for now everything looks like a crazy old man`s hoard of junk... My second place (apartment) has a bunch of boxes in the walk-in closet, I would like to combine the two collections in the future as well. But at the same time, I always contemplate what the point of a collection is.

  6. Absolutely can`t wait for this.

Last single was so amazing, I am sure this one will be awesome too, and that `Bon Voyage` will be beautiful.

Love the look, sound, feel, everything. They went for a softer, more simple feeling with surface emotions with Boomy-Boomy and Every, but have came back to a deeper lyrical and atmospheric level which I prefer. Still goofy song names and elements, but telling stories straight from the heart.

  7. girugamesh - gravitation

    WRITE-UP:

The first mini-album from what can be seen as the `new` girugamesh that comes off as `solid` no matter which way I look at it, from the quality of the tracks, to the production, congruent sound, and tonality.

After what quickly became my favorite Girugamesh release, the album MONSTER, they took a slightly different approach with their LIVE BEST, and have now returned to put out a mini-album that would be redundant as an album, but feels perfect in it`s five track form.

What girugamesh seems to have done is perfect a sound. The tracks all play out with complete conviction, absolutely dialed transitions and compositions, and what must be the best production quality and mastering of their career to date. The perfect, seamless approach to their sound is what struck me the most in my initial listens, and defines this release to me. To get a taste for the sound, listen to the gravitation track, this would be the most new-user-friendly track. If you can stand to go a little harder than that, then you should hear out the rest of the album.  Unlike Monster which played with different elements in a looser way, this release sticks very closely to a familiar center, although it does employ new elements influenced contemporary sounds as well, though none of these define the songs; the main dish is always the giru-sound, it`s never someone else`s sound with giru sprinkled on top, which fans of their current key elements should be able to appreciate.

Overall, you are getting a masterclass in the core of modern girugamesh, executed beautifully, with five tracks of straightforward head-bangers that plays out seamlessly, and is very friendly to the repeat-button.

    Track Count: 5

    Listens: 15-20

Production Quality:  :5.0: Absolutely blown away from the sound of this one, a heavier album, but without as much as a rough edge as MONSTER`s production. The sound-stage and depth of the lows as well as their placement is quite something.

    Overall Rating: :5.0:

    Worth the Purchase?

At a price lower than what some bands charge for singles, and almost half of the cost of many of the other mini-albums in my collection, I would say if you like the title track, then yes, it definitely is more than worth the price.

  8. Well, I am guessing they are basing it on the movie, not the manga, and the movie was set in a Sector-based area modeled on Hong Kong, not Japan.

I am sure they can either put the setting back to Japan, or keep it HK, or even places likes Shanghai or Beijing which can be done to still keep a similar feeling if done right... They could even take the material and move it to America, and change the setting completely and pull it off, albeit in a drastic way, but all of these options take far more creative and imaginative powers than I would trust in pretty much any production company or director / team.

Also, even Japan itself and great anime or live action directors often can`t produce anything that holds a candle to the original anime or manga, especially if they try to be faithful. Some of the best adaptions came a little out of left field with stuff like Oldboy, Edge of Tomorrow, etc...

But for directors, even though I too think this movie will stink...

Ridley Scott is great, or at least I think he used to be great. Blade Runner etc... And I wish in this age we still had movies with real effects done creatively, not all CGI.

Coen Brothers. They never did anything like this, but they have a mind and creativity that can understand a work and why it`s good in the first place. They wont look at GiTS and think: `oh, futuristic setting, kung fu strong woman, cyborgs, guns and DEEP philosophy`. they will see the real details and the charm of it.

Sam Raimi. Would definitely make it goofier, but one of the most creative when it comes to using effects, creating worlds, and finding ways to do things including effects and action, without just pushing the CGI button.

Kim Ji Woon. If he keeps it serious, and focuses on visual storytelling with progressive dialogue, like in A Bittersweet Life, I think he might be able to do it.

Anyway, those are some names I am just throwing out there.

To be honest, it may seem negative, but because of how much I love GiTS I hope the movie never gets made, or it quickly disappears like the Oldboy remake, and I never have to hear about it. There were always rumours of James Cameron thinking of an Eva live-action. That`s also something I never want to see, although he is a much more capable director than some of the ones out there doing anime remakes or in the talks to do them...

Also just did some quick reading on the GiTS original movie. One issue the director had was with the producers pushing him to put less emphasis on the philosophy, and more on the action to sell the movie, which he fought. I think that will be a big issue with a remake, anywhere in the world, the director will be pressured to make it Cyborg Matrix Reloaded.

As you may know, the director of the original film has been making the upcoming live-action `The Last Druid` set out next year I think. If anything, I would love to see him do GiTS it if it had to be made. I met with him when he was in my city making part of it. It is an English film, but he was surrounded by all sorts of professional otaku in his entourage, like the Sci-Fi otaku who was making up all his mecha designs. They made a big deal out of the models they made of different things, and seemed to really keep the hands-on feel which I like, and although the movie will be English, kept it very anime inspired and driven in production terms.

But then again, many of us are anime and Japanese pop-culture fans, and the movie will be made for a bigger audience, so it is up to the producers and director etc. to decide if they really care about us, the fanbase, and the original material. Maybe if they want less of an outlash against the works they could also just make the movie under a different name but rip off all the ideas and never give anyone credit like many other directors have been doing for a while now.

    WRITE-UP:

Fear and Loathing`s third, and personally easiest to get into album.

While heavily retaining their distinct approach to song-writing, the band has created an album less tied to a genres feel, and more to a three-dimensional story told in vibrant color and many tempos as well as moods.

The tracks all feel like stand-alone adventures told sonically, with rock, layered with heavy electronics, harsh vocals and modulated soft, tender and youthful vocals interlacing. To get a feel for the album you can watch the PV`s, and listen to the songs released before-hand, yet that would only be a portion of the experience that the album presents to you. Each track is different, each one rides an emotional and musical roller-coaster, and each can go either way terms of whether you like it or not.

Numerous listens really changed my perspective of the album. At first some of the tracks attached to me, but others went right through me. After listening and listening, as well as going on a day of bike riding with the album on repeat, each track begin to take a hold on me in its own different way.

    Tracks that instantly clicked:

Are You Ready to Blast Off? / Rave-up Tonight

    Interlude

    Virtue and Vice

    Flutter of Cherry Blossoms

Tracks that had to grow on me:

    Swing It!!

    Thunderclap

    Nail the Shit Down

    Rain Inside Your Eyes

Counterattack by the Sesame Sized Bodies

Track that eventually became my favorite:

    Stay as Who You Are

So I started with a couple I instantly liked, then I slowly grew fond of others, and eventually found my favorite amongst a track I had previously not completely clicked with.

One of the beautiful things about the song style, is that there are so many parts to a song, so many changes, different moods, sounds, and catches laden within what can be longer tracks, where your favorite part is three minutes in, and in the process of waiting for it, discover new things you like just as much or possibly more.

Listen after listen the album rose in my preference, and it soon became my favorite release by the band, as I found many things that connected with me, and appreciated the more overt nature of the emotion in this release, as opposed to their previous works.

Track Count: 11 (Two short instrumentals, and 9 full tracks ranging from standard to longer length, yet the album blows by fast for me).

    Listens: 30-50

Production Quality: :4.0: Great production, though my personal preference would be for an album with this range of instrumentation and tonality to have a bigger, clearer sound.

    Overall Rating: :4.5:

    Worth the Purchase?

If you enjoy the sound of Rave-up Tonight, and Virtue and Vice, I would say this will definitely not leave you with post-purchase regret. An experience all its own that shouldn`t be missed if you like the band`s style.

  10. KICS-3098.jpg?v=2

    WRITE-UP:

Matenrou Opera returns with an album that tastes like a concept album, yet leaves the over-all decision on whether it is or isn`t up to your interpretation.

The term Avalon refers to a place in so-called Arthurian legend, where both the Excalibur was forged, and legendary knights as well as King Arthur himself was buried. Some speculate it to be an island off the coast of Scotland and Wales.

The album is laden with sounds reminiscent of Medieval times, and song titles refer to heaven or paradise, which Avalon is a gateway to; that is where the concept album feel plays in, yet the songs actually tell varied tales which can not always be played in to the album`s title, and the inclusion of the previous single A-Side Orb further leads us astray.

Concept album or not, this album is definitely not a collection of different tracks or hits thrown together. It plays more like a film cut into different parts, telling different stories, but almost always fitting a certain feel, and that is the experience you get from this album. It has a common title, but the experience is a unique one. The `Opera` touch of the delivery along with a unique vocalist matched with a hard band delivers a one-of-a-kind experience, and I think that is really what you are getting from this album. It`s not another rock album, not another VK album, it is something of its own, and you need to sample the singles from the album to see if you will enjoy this experience. One key thing to keep in consideration is if you like the vocalist and delivery, as this is a comon point of divergence amongst opinion.

To me, this more of a sit-down and listen album rather than something you can throw on, although tracks like Orb, 隣に座る太陽 and クロスカウンターを狙え are the tracks I would think you are likely to throw on as stand-alone listens. The album doesn`t use hooks or catches as much as you would expect from a modern album, if you want a comparison, I would say it is more like Versailles from a different era.

    Track Count: 12

    Listens: 15-20

Production Quality: :4.5: Great sound, yet my personal preference is for a wider sound stage and more clarity in individual intruments, esp. more of the guitars.Though they seem to specifically like putting emphasis on the vocals.

Overall Rating: :4.5: Great album, defined, unique experience, listening on the I will skip some tracks, but if I want to let it play out there are no skip-inducing tracks.

    Worth the Purchase?

For me, this is definitely worth the purchase. Although it is not an album that will get the most rotation. It is something I will keep in my library and bring out on occasion.

  11. Wow, the production really seems to have stepped up to a new level since The End.

That album was one of the last AAA albums I remember in terms of really deep, refined sound, this new song is really great in that respect too. Even if it is not your style, I think you can see that it is a really high quality product in terms of its 'workmanship'.

I want to hear more stuff of this quality.

I dont have my copy yet, hope for some interesting B-sides.

  12. He's an idiot. The shit that has been coming out of his mouth lately is purely controversial to get himself back in the headlines.

    http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/celebrity-life/gene-simmons-of-kiss-tells-depressed-people-to-kill-themselves-cops-triple-m-ban/story-fnk822dn-1227025850379

Definitely harsh and controversial but I think it would be best to discuss that in another thread if desired, and leave this thread's focus to discussing the matters brought up by the article, and also avoid only discussing whether people like Gene Simmons or his music, etc. as that takes away from the concentration on the huge discussion we can have about Rock, consumers, and the industry.

A lot of my friends have been diverting the focus to Gene Simmons or Kiss, etc... And I feel like that is besides the point with this article.

Please let us know what your say is on the topics addressed by Gene in this instance.

  13. Gene Simmons is making headlines again, this time for burying rock ‘n’ roll. The outspoken artist says “Rock is finally dead,” in an interview conducted by his son Nick for Esquire magazine. The Kiss singer-bassist also shares his thoughts on the failing record business and how he would not want to be an up-and-coming artist today.

“The death of rock was not a natural death,” Simmons offers. “Rock did not die of old age. It was murdered. Some brilliance, somewhere, was going to be expressed, and now it won’t, because it’s that much harder to earn a living playing and writing songs. No one will pay you to do it.”

Simmons also offers sobering advice for young musicians and songwriters saying, “Don’t quit your day job is a good piece of advice. When I was coming up, it was not an insurmountable mountain. Once you had a record company on your side, they would fund you, and that also meant when you toured they would give you tour support.” He adds, “There are still record companies, and it does apply to pop, rap, and country to an extent. But for performers who are also songwriters — the creators — for rock music, for soul, for the blues — it’s finally dead. Rock is finally dead.”

He continues on about how he feels for this lost generation of kids who will not have the same opportunity that he had with Kiss. “It’s very sad for new bands. My heart goes out to them. They just don’t have a chance.” Simmons remarks. “If you play guitar, it’s almost impossible. You’re better off not even learning how to play guitar or write songs, and just singing in the shower and auditioning for ‘The X Factor.’ And I’m not slamming ‘The X Factor,’ or pop singers. But where’s the next Bob Dylan? Where’s the next Beatles? Where are the songwriters? Where are the creators?”

Simmons added that he is not being simply being cantankerous offering, “I’m not the guy to be pouting and complaining about stuff. I make a decent living. I’m very, very lucky. But that’s because we started before the chaos, in the days when people had to buy records. If you didn’t like a band, you didn’t buy their albums, and the people decided.”

Abridged version of a very interesting article by Esquire. I posted the short version to make an easier digest, but please read the whole thing:

    Please share your thoughts!

  14. Going to buy this album. I never listened to their last one that much but this one seems more uptempo and hopefully more push and play, as their last was more atmospheric and was more of a sit down and listen kind of experience to me.

Really like the album covers, and the juxtaposition with the title, band look, sound, and presentation.

The use of the word Gangsta as a marketing ploy obviously worked very well, as I see crowds gather to bump threads on different sites, and everyone just has to see the video and hear the song, even if just to criticize. As a VK band it is small-scale, but it develops a crowd of outsiders who love to hate them, and are exposed to their music, and gives fans a mentality that there are naysayers and the band is underrated, etc... Though obv. It only keeps the band on the mind of those already in the VK bubble, and wont translate to any visible increase in foreign sales, esp. when it is mostly serious fans and or collectors who buy much, and purchase of this album is being discouraged in its News thread.

Anyway, just rambling here, but I see Sadie is in the same boat as BORN, where it is cool to make fun of them, and that makes everyone follow them over other bands. I expect this to continue for a while, just like MuCC's following, where they changed their approach to.music years and years ago but people still post in every thread about how they used to be better, yet these people still follow every single release regardless.

(Dont take this post as a negative judgement, just a neutral observation).

  15. Japanese companies are notoriously bad at selling their product outside Japan. That may sound funny looking at the car and electronics makers, but it's true.

Not to mention they are grossly overpriced. I was looking at Cyntia's album on Japanese iTunes. 250 Yen per song. That's around $2.50 each. The whole album was 2000 Yen, or $20. You can't do that in America, period.

So I am curious about something. Why are Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's videos full length? There's no editing. if "Ponponpon" was cut off after 90 seconds, it never would have gone viral like it did. So why did they post the full version of that and every other video she's made?

What fields are Japan notoriously bad in?

They dominated the automobile, motorcycle, electronics, gaming industries for either extensive periods or to date, as well as strong flows in distribution of consumables, cultural exports, pop-culture exports, as well as taking a cut of the sale of most tapes, cds and blu-ray discs (actually a cut off all blu rays printed).

As for cd prices, goods have different values in different areas, not just Japan, and money flow as well as exchange rates play big factors, which is why iTunes is seperated throughout the World, and why we have import-export laws, duties, taxes etc..

Music has become severely devalued in USA, Japanese music not so much, which is why even though Japan faces a huge language barrier, it is the number 2 market in the world and is constantly predicted to overtake America.

As for Japanese managers being clueless, or stupid, how so? They are using their specific experience and business methods, which may not match those expected by areas with a devalued market, but even though I myself would not run my business that way, I can see why they do, when many of the labels that use the short PV method seem to be doing very well in sales, and are making revenue regardless.

I think that there is always room for improvement, and change, but even though I have my own ideas, I cant simply bash companies when they are making their business model work, and there is no concrete data to show they are losing any potential sales or have reason to change it.

  16. The album that turned me into a big Royz fan.

When I got it, I honestly didn`t expect it would get as many plays as it has, even putting them in my Last.fm toplists, but I have learned to take my expectations and impressions lightly. Here is my late review.

Songs that hit me hardest and get the most play:

    疾風迅雷 (Thunderclap Blast / Hurricane)

Has that attitude I love, and is a perfect song to roll out with and provide the soundtrack for you conquering the day.

囁姫遊女 (Not sure how to say this, like Whispering Whore Princess)

A guitar lick and synth melody that just drags you into a wild mood. Total ROCK feel.

    REVELATION

Soft, tender vocals that charm and help tell a story with a rocking feel.

    -----

There are some real stand-out tracks to me, but the whole album has a strong cohesive feel and signature that really impresses me. Royz definitely has a distinguished feel for this album, even if people didn`t get that impression in the first place.

The lyrics have a nice feel, while keeping a dark side, like Yin and Yang, there are bright patches and beautiful vocals, but also cockroaches lurking underneath.

Nice sound, strong instruments and vocals, that focus more on having a good, solid sound than being virtuosos or stealing the show.

You will notice that the album has a very similar feel as I mentioned, yet it doesn`t run into having too many similarities or feel repetitive, it is definitely something that flows nicely, gives each song emphasis, and can be played straight through without skipping, though in my opinion, you will probably be replaying certain tracks sure to be your favorite, and even just going right to those tracks over and over, I definitely did, and can enjoy every song yet give much more attention to three tracks over the rest which aren`t even lacking anything in my opinion.

Good quality production and disc print quality as well, obviously not a AAA album feel, but that`s not what it sets out to be, so one shouldn`t be looking for that, the sound is perfect for what it is, anything else may `overproduce` and take away from the feel.

Overall, I think this is a great album, worth the purchase if you sample REVELATION and 疾風迅雷 and enjoy them. Don`t let previous singles or sounds like LILIA define the band to you, as even with that track on the album, they have a lot to offer that you would miss out on if you were to judge them without trying the actual album.

OVERALL ALBUM SCORE FOR ME: :4.5:

OVERALL ALBUM SCORE FOR WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT ACCOMPLISHES WHAT IT SEEMINGLY SETS OUT TO DO: :5.0:

One of this year`s highlights personally, so far.

  17. Hello,

I thought it would be fun and interesting to do short, `elevator pitches` of the kind of Japanese music you are drawn to.

I think it will be most interesting to do it without mentioning genre, or anything like that, and instead of saying  `VK` or `Indie` etc...  because there are so many different sides of those, to express what kind, in terms of feeling, sound, etc... without common terminology.

Just describe the essence of it.

Here`s mine, feel free to do yours how you want, and stray outside of Japanese music in general if you feel the need to:

Action packed, in your face, with attitude. Something that defines its own sense of `cool`, and carries the feeling of `a desire for more in life`. Vocals and instruments that have defined styles, and carry emotion. Bonus points come with a meaning that either keeps it simple but relatable, or goes beneath the surface. Something that`s different, not because they are trying, but because that`s what they are, and reminds you to stand up with pride.
