The only track is strongly hate is UTAFUMI, which is surprising because it's like my second favorite single of theirs... Of their entire discography.  That's how much I love that single. I appreciate the raw-er vocals, but why does it sound like a live demo recorded on a phone, then someone broadcasted it on radio, and what was put on CD was a phone recording uploaded to youtube of the radio broadcast. It sounds really fucking weird compared to everything on the album.

I have the exact same sentiments and will be replacing the album version with the single version ASAP.

Save the one-take versions for future bonus tracks, don't put it on the album we've been waiting 4 years for.

actually i partially agree with the list above. never was a fan of gauze, but although i would put macabre, vulgar, and kisou above withering and marrow

I think it's genuinely interesting that everyone has such different lists when it comes to this band. I listened through all their albums recently in the lead up to TIW and Gauze really shone for me in particular :)

I like the new album, it's not my favorite of them but i like it...

My Personal Top DIR EN GREY Albums:

    01-UROBOROS [Remastered & Expanded]

    02-DUM SPIRO SPERO

    03-The Insulated World

    04-ARCHE

    05-THE MARROW OF A BONE

    06-Withering to death.

    07-Kisou

    08-VULGAR

    09-MACABRE

    10-GAUZE

Surely this is in reverse order? There are many here who would burn you at the stake for putting the holy quadrinity dead last 😂

  4. Unpopular opinion: I  think I'm the only person here who isn't blown away by the new album. Maybe it'll take more listens but barely any of the tracks are grabbing me at the moment. On first impressions it's like a bland Dum Spiro Spero, and I'm not a huge fan of that album.

Ranunculus is the stand out track to me. 赫, Followers, and 谿壑の欲 interested me the most I think. The rest just washed over me. I think it's the first time one of their albums hasn't immediately grabbed me unfortunately.

I cannot stand the new vocals on 詩踏み, they sound like a half-arsed live version in comparison to the original vocals. I find it akin to the album version of 激しさ. Ew.

Anyone else agree? No? I'll just sit down :)

Glad to see so many people having fun in the lead up to, and the release of, the new album though! Happy listening everyone! ^^

Chedoara is my favorite album of the year. I've been listening to it over and over, but I lack the musical expertise to go into the detail as to why I love it so much. Apart from the SEs, all of them have something interesting to offer, be it guitars, vocal techniques or sfx.

Yeah those SEs are garbage. I took these out and put Hito to Katachi as the first track; it provides a Sukekiyo-esque opening with a strong closer in the form of Vanitas :)

All I can think listening to it is that it's a really fantastic first album - leaps and bounds above many of their peers, and I think if they stick around in the scene, their next one will be ridiculous. One of the few bands that I feel I absolutely HAVE to see in Japan next year. Actually, with this style of music, I think they'd be really successful in front of a western audience, too, though I know getting VK bands to the states is wishful thinking in most cases.

Don't get me wrong, it's certainly a strong album and an astounding one when compared to first albums from other VK artists :) Miles ahead of that terrible EP they released many moons ago!

I'm really shocked that this thread isn't blowing up around CHEDOARA. I listened for the first time this morning and I'm honestly blown away! There's a similarity to Vulgar/WTD-era Diru in the overall feel of the record, but all wrapped up in this interesting proggy-djent package that I think a lot of other bands don't execute nearly as well. I haven't listened to the members' prior bands, but I love this record so far.

Same here. There was a lot of hype for it on here but after the record dropped there wasn't much activity. I assume people were disappointed?

I myself built it up in my head quite a lot but after a few listens I find it just 'OK'. There are some great songs on here so i'm not sure why.

  8. Had anyone noticed that the Utafumi on Spotify is the preview version? I was surprised at its brevity compared to the single version but found that it flowed much better?

    First listen thoughts:

This was very different from what I was expecting, since I was guessing it would be heavy af from start to finish. Surprisingly the moments where they opt for a more progressive/atmospheric sound ("Hito to Katachi", "D. Hymnus", etc.) are much better than the ones where they go heavy.

I very much agree with this. Grotesque is my favourite on the album because it's kind of like Sukekiyo had a beautiful love child with DEG. The heavy stuff is pretty meh in my opinion but not like the garbage they used to come out with.

Got my copy today from CDJapan.

This album is simply amazing. All the songs are notable, the production is on point and well beyond what is generally expected for VK, and it overall lives up to the hype generated from the three songs we got in preview.

Any chance of an upload please now that you've awoken my musical boner? :3

Looks like my translations aren't that wrong at all, huh. Who would've thought.

Thanks for looking into this. I'm not sure why you're getting so much slack for trying to be helpful but I appreciate your efforts anyhow :)

i want to get into this band 'oz' which album should i get?

Versus. Although their 'best of' pretty much covers their entire discography so I'd flick through that to see what era you click with most :)

  13. As much as I loved Arche, you can't deny it was bloated due to its length. I think we could do with something a bit sharper and to the point a la Vulgar.

I just don’t like a majority of the songs. Maybe five of them actually stand out.

Each to their own I guess; I find Beautiful Deformity to be the real snoozefest.

Well yeah, indies Gazette was different, but I feel like there hasn’t really been a significant change since NIL. Even as they’ve gotten heavier, the songwriting still generally follows a very specific formula. Dogma was a slight departure, but only because it was heavy and aggressive for a vast majority of the album.

This is why I can't comprehend people disliking Toxic.

  16. I dunno, I thought The Mortal was pretty fresh for them? But yeah, most of the album is copy-paste. I'm cool with that though as it means it has more longevity than Dogma. I loved that album when it first came out but I struggle to listen to it in its entirety now.

The version on their OHP is 256kbps AAC, which I currently have. The DVD/Blu-ray with the PV should have the original 'single version' in lossless audio. Whenever it leaks, I'll make a rip and do some editing, to make sure it transitions properly with the surrounding tracks.

I have to wait on the DVD/Blu-ray rips leaking online to do this, because I got the Blu-ray version. I'm pretty sure my optical drive that I bought in 2015 for $20 doesn't take Blu-ray discs.

    Awesome, thank you! :3
