Big demographic for that kind of look and heavy sound if done right. Lots of people can emotionally attach to the feeling presented.

Most of these core-bands get 'famous' in an instant nowadays because it's the new trend in Visual Kei or something. Just look at Nocturnal Bloodlust and Mejibray; they rip off a ton of their music from western bands yet they are considerably high up on the popularity charts. It has a lot to do with looks too.

I was there yesterday for shopping and it looks like they've moved everything and removed the whole jmusic mag section... I really hope they are just confused in restocking this season and not deciding to drop Cure and such.. or dying.. they replaced a bookstore in the same place that couldn't stay in business , I'll be checking in again sometime soon
