  1. 👻~Horror Music Videos~👻

Music videos inspired by the vast horror genre/aesthetic are an interesting phenomenon, even being created by some pop artists. Post some of your favorites and discuss!

Here are a few of mine:

    Wampire - The Hearse
Love the garish lighting and 80s vibe!

    Kiryu - 百鬼夜行 (hyakki yakou)
11/10 cinematography and art direction make for a unique, otherworldly PV.

    Keane - Disconnected
Still confused that this exists--an unexpected video! Some Shelley Duvall Shining vibes from the lead actress.

    Steady Holiday - Terror
A bit more subtle than the rest, but it's my favorite recent example, featuring some kind of gnarly tentacle vermin.

How is this band? Anyone have anything to recommend? This diet Moran look has me intrigued.

As "art kei" as they can look sometimes and despite the fact that vocalist Akuta teamed up with Soan project, Chanty really doesn't sound like Moran at all, other than not sounding like your typical VK. They're much closer to an indie rock sound.

If you're interested though, I personally recommend よくのかたまり and m.o.b. (singles), as well as the mini-album that @saishuumentioned!

Sui looks like he's going to drop a very big poop in every single photo. What a weird pose.

The more I look at it, the more I think his pose is supposed to be kind of in the shape of the Star of David. (It does read crabcore/poopy, though!)

  4. Those who follow MH's Recommended Tracks series know that any time GRIMOIRE has a new release, they're bound to end up on the list. I'm pretty picky when it comes to contemporary VK, but this band has become one of my favorites currently active in the scene. From their their bedtime/zodiac outfits to their surprisingly well-produced gothic PVs, this band takes full advantage of their visual element. Musically, I like to describe them as 'dark graveyard carnival kei.' Considering that all the musicians all stem from the guilty-pleasure pop band PIECE, I was a little more than surprised when my host boys started churning out chugalicious riffs. Somehow, the style works for them and it's the best (and most technical) they've ever sounded. While their output can be a bit 'samey,' I can't knock them for sticking to a niche concept that is so meticulous (everything from thematic cover art to the scribbly 'handwritten' text on every PV). From what I've read, some people aren't fans of their first release, Hitoritopia, which featured noticeably more amateur production, but lawd, I loved how atmospheric it was. I'm hoping they'll bring back that vibe in full-swing, now that they have the production to properly back it up.

They seem to have just recently signed with Timely Records (DADAROMA, XAA-XAA, etc.), so I see big things in GRIMOIRE's future!

Anyway, it's about time we had a thread for them here! Who else is a fan? Favorite song/PV/release/member? All discussion is welcome!

There was a VK band that did crowdfunding once before... Lacroix Despheres. That project was a TOTAL flop though. It was a split campaign between some Japanese crowdfunding site and Indiegogo for the rest of the world. The Indiegogo campaign flopped hard with a whopping 33 donors (I was one :() while the Japanese one hit their funding goal. This was supposed to go towards the recording of their third full album with a scheduled release date of June 2015 which came and went with nary a word from the band. I've pretty much given up on it ever coming out since the band won't even do much more than an update once a year like "hey guys album hit some difficulties maybe it'll be done some day!".

Oop, I guess I was one of the 33 donors too, haha. Yeah... still waiting on that third album. The lack of communication has been very disappointing.

In general though, I actually don't mind the crowdfunding format. I've gotten some cool bonus items (signed CDs, limited merch, etc.). The Lacroix one is the only one I supported that didn't work out.

The whole crowdfunding through gofundme/kickstarter thing isn't really 'alive' over in Japan, is it? Or am I just misinformed?

That's the impression I get too. Besides Lacroix (2015), I'm only familiar with möscow çlub (2013), as far as Japanese bands doing crowdfunding.

Or maybe, just maybe, they just happen to prefer how it sounds? Of course I'm only speaking for myself here, but I'm really big on vocals... not only in the quality/talent but the general "sound". If you gave me the same song with an English-speaking native singing in English and a Japanese-speaking native singing in Japanese, I'd almost always choose the latter. I find that Japanese just sounds more pleasing and flows better to me (likely due to the consonant-to-vowel ratio) than the harsher sounds of a Germanic language, for example.

    This af.

I'm not denying the OP's observations about a certain bias some fans may have, but at the same time, I think a lot of people downplay the uniqueness of different languages themselves. When it comes down to it, it's extremely difficult to find bands singing in different languages that actually manage to "sound" like each other. Even if a German-language band existed that sounded, musically, exactly like THE NOVEMBERS or something, I highly doubt I'd ever enjoy listening to them as much as Japanese NOVEMBERS, just from a phonetic standpoint. And this is coming from someone who studies/teaches/otherwise loves German.

But there's all kinds of biases. There's fans that never go beyond English-language or Anglo/European music. There's Japanese music fans that don't dare touch VK, because it would ruin their cred. There's VK fans who put the blinders on to any other scene or country's music.

    Elaborating this by supporting @herpeshere:

Love or hate Laputa's rave/trance era but just like in NuAGE, synths here are added in for "thematic" purposes - instruments are not drowned etc. etc.. God knows what happened after this and during 10s really....

Interesting, but it's hard for me to even connect the "rave/trance" synths here (I looked it up; this is from 2002ish?) with the trebly stuff now. Definitely a big change. What electronic genre could we even relate the synths to nowadays?
