  1. Cursed idea: A Begin Japanology episode on 90's Cult Classic Vkei bands.

I love Begin Japanology, I love Kote Kei, but I imagine a Begin Japanology episode on Kote Kei would be cringey lmao

    1. Peace Heavy mk II

      Peace Heavy mk II

only if it features an essay by @cvltic on the Yuuga vs. RES drama from 2002

    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

Oh lord. Imagine Peter Barakan trying to explain DEViL KiTTY.

And being that shows like this always gotta tie old stuff into the current day, they'd probably also interview La'Veil Mizeria lmao

  2. Band idea: Kote Kei band that wears Kimono and uses traditional Japanese instruments,

but the stereotypical Kote-Kei speaking parts are traditional Japanese poetry

    1. Paraph

      Paraph

wasn't this essentially kagrra,? or at least isshi's solo project before death

    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

@Paraph Kinda? Except I was thinking more of  a La'Mule type band. Especially since Kon fucking loves those speaking-parts lol

  3. What's with that style of production Yayoi (La'miss Fairy) did where both guitars would be crammed onto the right channel in certain parts of the song?

Why the fuck did Yayoi think it was a good idea? It literally just makes the song harder to listen with headphones because I can't fucking make out wtf the guitars are playing because one ear is trying to process both while the guitars and the other only hears fucking drums and bass.

Or in the case of Ogre by Cuartet, two guitars are crammed into the right channel while the left channel just has a really quiet version of the actual left guitar. But only during the riff. The rest of the song is normal I think

    1. diryangrey

      diryangrey

i got this a few times on some tracks & in most cases it was a strange shitty rip

like 最後の嘘 by alsdead - beautiful song imho from 2015 but i got used to hearing ALL guitars hard panned right; some other instruments + vocals hard panned left.
listened to it like that for 4+ years and then a few months ago someone uploaded a FLAC here - totally reasonable normal easy to listen to mastering on that one.
no idea how it happened tho but maybe phasing issues if someone's tried to do an analog rip.

    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

@diryangrey That could be a possibility, but the rip of Ogre by Cuartet I have is a lossless rip, and its conveniently only during the main riff. The rest of the song is normal, and the rest of the mini album actually sounds better and clearer for some reason.

  4. Holy fuck Mama sounds way better than Morphine did. I'm pretty sure that's partially because Saki has input in their music, and by that I mean hes making them play old school Vkei lol

    1. saishuu

      saishuu

that new song of theirs is a bop. I hope the rest of the mini is just as good

    2. patientZERO

      patientZERO

I liked Morphine's first output, but they got old real fast, so I never checked out Mama. Maybe I'll give them a listen now.

  5. If anyone wants to hear really cool Chinese Folk Metal, try out the band Snowsedim. The guitars are pretty basic, not gonna lie, but they use Chinese instruments that aren't seen as often. Like, this song features a Banhu, a type of folk Fiddle from Northern China, often the lead instrument in Hebei Opera.

Honestly the fact its basic and catchy makes it even more authentic, because Chinese opera is traditionally based on simple, catchy melodies. The vocalist has a really powerful voice when singing as well. It's definitely a more rustic take on Chinese tradition, which is cool because I prefer the more rustic forms of traditional Chinese music anyway lol.

    1. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

For reference, most Chinese Folk Metal bands are rooted in modern Chinese Orchestra, and would be better classified as Chinese Symphonic Metal than Folk Metal technically (Chinese folk music is a completely separate musical category, although both are thought of as traditional)

      Himeaimichu

For fans of Kote Kei, the melody played by the Dizi flute in this song really remind me of Kote guitar riffs. However, I think it's simply because they coincidentally used the same mode or scale those Kote songs use. The song slaps though.

  6. Can there be a new GTA Clone series? Because Rockstar has gone to shit and I don't trust them to make GTA VI any good at this point.

We should've got a sleeping dogs 2, but Square Enix had to be a huge dick to the companies they work with

    1. platy

      platy

There's a Brazilian studio working on a GTA esque game set in Brazil.

    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

That seems cool! Hopefully they'll make an English translation of the game! Brazil would be an interesting place for a GTA clone. I imagine the Favelas of Rio would make for excellent parkour

  7. Edit: Live now!

IDK if I'm allowed to promote this here, but I'm gonna be streaming GTA San Andreas a little tonight for the first time on Twitch, and I was wondering if any of y'all would like to join in and give feedback

    1. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

If anyone is interested, I'll be streaming here soon

      Himeaimichu

The stream is over now, but tune in tomorrow. Hopefully things will go more smoothly

  8. Holy fuck, so y'all know that picture of Yuuga I found where he looks like a total scene kid?

Yeah that same picture, although blurry, is in the background of the Akuma Kicha cover, on the TV
    79764872_509559579644889_76710142529828240184-akuma-kicha-tonai-genteiban-cover.

    1. Jigsaw9

      Jigsaw9

That's some fine detective kei work.

    2. fruitfork

      fruitfork

The older artwork on their releases are super cute and appealing to me. also devil kitty is just a great band name, 悪魔鬼茶 would be just as good

  9. Did Kamaitachi ever release the song "Neurose" on a CD?

    1. Total Saikou
    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

So I guess I either have to deal with the crusty tape rip on Chan Macky's channel on YT or hope that someone uploads a rip that I don't have to take from youtube lmao

  10. Alternate universe where X Japan is just left where it ended, and COLOR is the one promising a new album and milking MARRY's legacy

    1. IGM_Oficial

      IGM_Oficial

Maria Cross would be a higly talented musician, and Mejibray would make good music.

    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

Cuartet becomes the next biggest Vkei band in 2005, while this random-ass band named "Gazetto" or something just fizzles

  11. Is it just my limited taste in Vkei, or did Vkei literally just ignore grunge in the early 90's?

(Did Grunge even have the same impact in Japan as it did in America?)

    1. Total Saikou

      Total Saikou

I'm pretty sure you're right though. For some reason, grunge never took off in Japan. All the cool alternative/experimental bands didn't even think of seriously playing it, they usually went for the shoegazer or noise route. In all my (rather short) years of being a VK fan, the only band I've ever seen touch grunge was Plastic Tree, and they dropped the genre like a hot potato after the new millennium.

Also, I looked up "Japanese grunge" and all I got was 1 musician. Take that as you will.

    2. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

I know the band Glamorous Honey dipped their toes into Grunge, and the nagoyakei musician Aie has grunge influences.

The GazettE are definitely fans of grunge since they literally wore Nirvana patches lol. It seems as if what little Grunge did permeate Visual Kei, it was long after Cobain died and Grunge wasn't cool anymore in America.

  12. Was a full PV ever released for GossiP's "Aa, Chuunigakusei", or just a PV spot?

    1. IGM_Oficial

      IGM_Oficial

      Just a PV spot.

  13. Was Karma drunk during AvelCain's last lives? It seems as if the concerts went on, he got progressively more wasted xD

    1. emmny

      emmny

      nope, just talented .

  14. I'm still thoroughly confused by the whole Kiyoharu and Kuroyume mess. Like, how did Kiyoharu own the rights to Kuroyume in the first place? Doesn't Avex take tight control of their bands?

Then again, Kuroyume got away with anti-pop songs, so maybe Kiyohar was able to negotiate things where he'd own the rights to Kuroyume when they signed to Avex?

    1. Elazmus

      Elazmus

Yeah it's all down to contract, Kuroyume as an act had been popular for almost a decade at the point of signing with AVEX. The label also took over all of his solo stuff and SADS work too, so to them Kiyoharu is what you call a "life-r" (someone who remains with the company even when doing different acts and projects) He's someone respected enough on the scene and in the business that it's not unwise to leave him with creative control and save a fortune on his contract by not insisting on buying his name(s) (something that he could just refuse and look for a less tight-fisted company.

      this is a guess

Idk shit about the music industry, everything I know about contracting and promotional rights is from profashional rassling.

  15. It just so happens that my birthday is also on the anniversary of the first airing of Sailor Moon. xD

    1. IGM_Oficial

      IGM_Oficial

And I'm five months younger than the Pokémon anime lol

  16. Satsui by Dezert, but every time Chiaki says "Satsui", Furanfuran by Kuroyuri to Kage plays, but every time K slaps his bass, Dead End Kids by Inugami Circus Dan plays, but every time Kyouko trills an R, Shinagawa Shinjuu by Ningen Isu plays, but every time the Taishogoto is played, the whole thing repeats itself.

Wait, this would literally go on for infinity, because it would just keep repeating from the beginning

    1. Ada Suilen

      Ada Suilen

Oh God, the strangest song of the music history! I wouldn't never sleep with such a melody in my mind

  17. For my fellow fans of Traditional Japanese music, here's something interesting: Hikaru Sawai, son of the Koto master Tadao Sawai, started the proto-VisualKei Metal band Mephistopheles. His Koto work is also very Metal influenced.

IDK if he still plays in Mephistopheles though.

    1. Komorebi

      Komorebi

      Nice, thanks for the tip.

  18. Uggh. Cringing at my old comments on Wagakki Band videos. I may still strongly not like them, but gah I look so closed minded. Just.. *Cringes and deletes comments*

    1. Ito

      Ito

      Live and learn :)

  19. Either Hayate should rejoin GossiP, or Ritsu should learn how to do that Military style drumming.

    1. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

^^ Edit: That could be possible since Hayate now instructs at a music school, and even teaches Vkei drummers

  20. Seeing that lyric analysis makes me realise how much I miss Kagerou. I mean, there won't be another band like them. The only one that comes close is GossiP, but GossiP focuses on a main concept. Kagerou wasn't afraid to explore while still maintaining their signature style and sound.

    RIP Daisuke.

    1. SadMoomin

      SadMoomin

Me too... :( I miss Daisuke so bad it feel surreal it's going to be 7 years already since he passed away

  21. I wonder, have any Vkei bands used the idea of the Japanese Biker as a concept?

    1. BrenGun

      BrenGun

Yes! But then you need to dig more "underground". go to Punk visual kei.

  22. I'm so close to getting to yellow name status. Hooo boy

    1. sakurakurakura

      sakurakurakura

I still have a long way to get there, lmao

  23. There needs to be more songs like "Sonzai" by Jakura. The mix of old school heavy metal (pre-NWOBHM metal, that is) with elements of general 90's Vkei.

    1. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

BTW, before anyone tries to cringe, I know the song was released in 2002. I'm just saying it sounds like old school Metal mixed with 90's Vkei

  24. I miss JyuLie so much. The Traditional Japanese theme, and their fucking amazing support drummer. SERIOUSLY, look at this guy:

    1. Himeaimichu

      Himeaimichu

Also, what's with GossiP members and getting really good drummers (Isao and Hayate/Tetsurou)? Like, Isao is literally touring overseas with other bands, and Tetsurou is literally a teacher of other Vkei drummers.

And then we have Ritsu.. yeah... he has yet to really wow me.
