@Seelentau you'll probably know what I'm talking about. Wasn't there a performance from ~97 where they did a fakeout with the intro to I'll but transitioned immediately into ZAN and played for about ten minutes?

It is from 1999, and it is from the well-known, iconic Osaka-Jou live that fortunately was recorded and released in DVD.

Btw, I believe they used to do a lot of fake intros to play ZAN back in that era. Raw punk attitude!

    They opened an instagram account:

After looking at their new pics, it's clear they had their hair done for the session, and also used make up at least for delivering a 'natural' effect. So they still look pretty elegant, dramatic, gothy and androginous in this 'new look'. Although them announcing they are going to tone down a good part of their old looks, maybe they won't completely erase the key elements of the 'VK' look.

    Feeling positive today, lol

Eh, I mean I’m fine with the composition tbh.

I always feel like I stan Diru way to much lol.

I'm a HARD stan for Dir, but I must agree on TWOM being pretty uninspired. It's not bad, nor in terms of production either in terms of composition. Rather, it's actually good, but still isn't something I would add to my playlist ever. For that kind of doomy ballads that are a trademark of the band I have already several, starting from Mazohyst of Decadence.

  4. As much as it hurts, I'm sure I would do the same if I were in their place. VK isn't nowadays a good scene to be related to in the eye of the public if you want to do actual art (at least not with 0.1mg, Chicboy and the like being around).

Btw, "leaving make up" shouldn't be a radical choice; maybe they are leaving the flamboyant look for a more quiet one, I hope so.

  5. Speaking about past high-quality VK...

My dykes deserve to be on the spotlight again. It's a shame they kept being so tiny even having a career of many years being very talented at delivering good VK aesthetics. Their music always sounded very fresh to me, even today.

I've always wondered why there wasn't any other girls act in VK besides Exist and Danger Gang. Is the apparent gya's heterosexual desire the only answer to this matter?

Btw, Jyou's Takarazuka-king charm is everything!

Another one mediocre brvtal visual core 0-0-0-0-0-0 band?

I also find br00tal stuff to be mediocre the majority of times, but Cazqui's work with symphonic arrangments, contrapunctual guitar and bass lines, harmonic modulations, heavy emphasis on melody, etc. makes the easy-tiring blast beats, guitar chugging and screaming instead very pleasing and interesting. I think thats the reasong why I, who always was suspicious about anything br00tal, came to like Nokubura a lot back when they were still active with their original line-up...

Zig+Zag (the angura clockwork orange one, not the menhera bait-and-switch one) will be holding their 15th anniversary oneman, 『トモシビヲモテテノナルホウヘ・・・あのつづき?』, at Tsutaya On Air West on April 1st.

On a related note, I suppose it's also news that they're still active 🤔 Here is their upcoming schedule:

    9/01: Kichijouji CRESCENDO

    9/14: Meguro The Live Station

    10/26: Meguro The Live Station

    11/17: Kichijouji CRESCENDO

    4/1/2020: Tsutaya O-West

I can't relate the fact that a band is going to be celebrating its 15th anniversary with the fact that said band is also a miracle that's still active... Such an obscure one!

In a general sense, I find it a little strange that despite their immense popularity, there haven't been a lot of other acts that have tried to recreate a similar sound of any of their eras (at least, that I know of). They've got a sound that is uniquely Malice Mizer.

Being thinking about this a lot recently...

Wow, now that's a feel. I played out my home made copy of Aliene Ma'riage's Les Soirée in high school and it was a shock to hear some of these songs again at a quality above 96 kbps when I revisited the album almost 10 years later.

By the way, you mention you're french, are you familiar with Tanja? She used to have her own website with live reports going as far back as 1998. That place was a goldmine for me back in the day and it still remains an exclusive source of info outside of Japan for some of the more obscure bands she covered.

EDIT: found it again, here's a link for anyone interested https://web.archive.org/web/20120427161556/http://lasteve.free.fr/blog/autres/listeconcerts01.htm

Oh, my, god. I can't believe that there actually WAS western people coming to Japan for, like, a tour final of Syndrome or even Dir's 2001 Budokan?! What kind of weird anime crossover is this?!

This is such gold to the guys interested in vk culture besides its music. We should start a thread (or even a board?) for you the aunties/uncles of the '1st wave' to tell us with as much detail as you want your antics back then!

Thank you SO much for this!

While I’m sure that some expats/kids of expats were involved, the actual spread to the western side was heavily facilitated through file sharing. The “word of mouth” between friends outside of Japan occurred after file sharing had already made the music accessible to foreigners.

It would be interesting if someone 'old enough' could share his /her opinions on VK spreading before the 2006-2008 boom in the West.

Nothing mind-blowing, but it actually sounds pretty well. Seems they want to hit the new generation with the sound they've pulled out back in 2007-8.

The only thing I pray for is Aoi's singing decent on live once for all. He has always had a very recognizable voice, but that doesn't mean he actually had a 'good' voice. Even in his solo work after the disbandment of ayabie he struggled a lot to put out those really high-pitched melodies of him...

does shinya literally have some contractual clause that states he doesn't ever have to bother with changing his looks? it's so goddamn boring

I can't imagine he was so stubborn about toning down their visuals in the past...

They're too linked to my late adolescence for me to ever rate them objectively. I'll forever associate them with Naruto AMVs and embarrassing early 2000s forums where we all used signature banners made for us by the one guy there who knew how to use photoshop filters.

    Thanks for this💜
