I wouldn't be half as annoyed at pitchfork, if they at least supported artists that are actually talented, creative, and empowering as much as they push this degenerative nonsense.

CAT5 reacted to Karma’s Hat in VK bands you just can't stand?
That’s a tough question. For one, unlike what some might think I’m such a huge fan of vk that I can find something to enjoy in almost everything with varying degrees of guilt involved in the affair, and second, I just can’t find myself being driven to the point of disgust by anything going in the scene these days just because no individual band or event really matters or makes a difference anymore; it’s just all so irrelevant now. After this DEZERT menhera wave just repackaged the early 2010’s neon coloured mediocrity into new retro dreads ( literally some of these old royzcore bands jumped ship ) I’ve lost all hope for anything that interesting to happen, other than singular events of decent bands being decent and chugging along to a good run of a couple of releases, like say Kizu or Rands as of late. All that’s left in vk is to sink with the ship and watch it slowly fade after successive minor aesthetic morphosis taking place decade by decade, dissappearing out of sight into the dustbin as they disconnect my future 7D internet at the retirement home.

Back in the day I had a bit of hostility towards bands that had made clear attempts at having lamestream market appeal with a totally limp style like Girugamesh, D’espairsray and the rest of them, but one might as well fight against windmills rather than getting all hot and bothered about aging rockers losing touch and dignity whilst having bills to pay. If I was still to name something that can trigger me a bit, it’s late visual kei’s take on power metal like Jupiter that’s so excruciatingly awful that it makes me happy that at least all of us are going to die eventually and the heat death of the universe will make sure that there will be no one left on earth to play shitty music like that. Another thing are some of these very flashy bands that dazzle all the twelve year olds out there like Leda in Deluhi did to a degree, or Jiluka for example out of the contemporaries, but then again I can also listen to both these bands at any given moment just because I’m ridiculously biased towards the visual kei sound.

I have to say, despite all of the issues, I've been very impressed with these last two episodes, and this entire season thus far. Hard to believe there's really only two episodes left.

CAT5 reacted to saiko in Ghostwritten songs, "idol kei" and VK industry of the late 2010's
I've been wanting to discuss this topic for a long time. Fundamentally since, in the last ten years or so, the ratio of what in this forum has been called "formulaic VK stuff" has increased considerably, which, on the other hand it is closely linked to a phenomenon that has also recently appeared, and that in this forum has been called "idol kei". Of course, as many here quote repeatedly, the abandonment of adolescence does not cease to be a powerful motive in this situation, since it makes the condition of possibility (necessary, though not sufficient) so that one can remove the veils of idealization deposited on certain music or artist (and realize how badly done or executed some productions were; for me an example of it was Ryohei-era ayabie). Finally, in the verge of the end of the decade, another reason is my concern about the fate of the VK in the 2020's, considering that since the second half of the '10 has not thrown some real "quality" or "novelty", something that can be established at the level of "classic", as it actually happened with some releases put out in the period of 2008-2013.

It is not easy to discuss all these issues, I imagine, for several issues: perhaps it can hurt the emotions of some users of this forum who, in fact, are very comfortable enjoying the said idealization of certain artists. On the other hand, talking about this with some minimum measure of ownership requires a listening by a broad repertoire of VK, which has at least something from each of its eras (at least the "classics"). And also, it requires some knowledge (at least intuition) about aspects related to composition, instrumental performance, recording, live performance, the dynamics of the consumer market, etc.

As, to my pleasant surprise, I have found in this forum people who speak (or at least try) from this knowledge, is that I come to open this thread here in MH. Anyway, I hope that no one is deprived of writing here, contributing from what he/she has and his/her interests.

I think that it is best to start on by discussing some basic concepts, instead of directly delving into anything else:

    1) What are the indicators that make a song "ghostwritten" for you? And that it is not?
    2) What are the indicators that make a band "idol kei"? And that it is not?
    3) Where would you put its birth date?
    4) Do they qualify as "good music" or not? Do you enjoy them? Do not?
    5) Does it seem to you that this certain music goes "against" (to put it somehow) of certain "well-being" of the scene, or of the music itself?
    6) Why are you still listening to VK in the 2010s? Are your reasons the same as before? What does it give you that other music does not give you?

    I read you!

Is anyone going to NMFT this year? I skipped the last few for various reasons, but I'm going to the Friday show in Toronto. It's always worth seeing, but the organizer promised a more upbeat party vibe this time around, so I'm hoping it will be a bit more my speed than the last one I saw.

It's only $15 if you buy tickets in advance, and you get like 5 solid hours of entertainment, so I highly recommend it even if you're just mildly curious.

Line-up: imai (from group_inou), STEREOGIRL, Koutei Camera Girl Drei, TAMTAM and KO-GO-NO GORAIKO-Z

ETA: Actually, I just realized I skipped more than a few - looks like the last one I saw was vol. 9. Really liked THIS IS JAPAN from that one, but I can't remember much about the rest of the bands besides jizue playing a cover of When You Wish Upon a Star when we walked into the venue.

    There are two types of people in this world: people who complained that S08E03 was too dark, and those who have properly calibrated TVs and could see what was happening. I would be in the second group because I didn't notice a single issue the entire time and both my girlfriend and I said that the episode was very cinematic. Then again, we were in the perfect setting for it, so I guess we were also lucky ^^;;

ZZZoo is a super-group comprising of members from indie bands such as Z.O.A., Zeni geva, dip, Redrum, and Bacteria.
Their first album was just released on bandcamp after having been only available with a download code when buying a t-shirt at their concert.
    https://thezzzoo.bandcamp.com/

This is definitely an album for fans of space-and-krautrock circa the 60s and 70s.
Here are the liner notes from the bandcamp page:

    HUMAN ZZZoo

    HUMAN ZZZoo
Human zoos, also called ethnological expositions, were 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century public exhibitions of humans, usually in a so-called natural or primitive state.
It became of theme for this album...maybe lol
