reminiscing2004 reacted to webm4ster in SHOXX vol. 5 + vol. 8 full scans
Here I go logging in for the first time in (like...) six months. I've made it a (painful, admittedly) project to scan in all of my magazines in full and have them available for download. The reason being, a) it's cool to have images and know where/when they're from and b) I think it'll be good for newer fans especially to see where bands they know came from/the culture at the time. I tend to get slightly frustrated when people seem to completely rip bands apart from their context or not really be aware of the wider culture at the time.

I'm putting this up on a blogspot (please enjoy my very marketable skill in web design) and here's the links. I'll add some previews to this post (they'll be quite small, apologies).
The next one I'm scanning is volume 29. I need to put up volume 15 too; the scans are each about 2GB (zipped) so it's for the very dedicated. Enjoy !

Not Visual Kei but FACT had quite a good following, once separated they formed two groups 'Shadows' and 'Joy Opposites'
Both had a bit of steam at the beginning but it quickly faded away and neither group sounded immensely different to FACT

I understand what you're saying essentially. I used to not really hear it, but nowadays there are a lot of vocalists I can only enjoy when I'm "in the mood".

Check out early Janne Da Arc and Rentrer en Soi. After like 12 years of listening to visual kei, Yasu and Satsuki have consistently stuck out to me as some of the best vocalists, and tend to avoid a bit of the excessive vibrato and pitch slurring that a lot of other talented vk vocalists tend to embellish their singing with

reminiscing2004 reacted to hiko in Hi, I’m new! (So welcome me lol)
    Hi, my name is hiko.

I’ve been a fan of Visual Kei for a really long time now, many years, but I have always listened to Jrock anyway

I am from Japan, though Japanese is not my first language as I’ve always been bilingual with English and Japanese

I am a big fan of X JAPAN, and for X I’d say I idolise Yoshiki and Taiji the most.

I also like L’Arc~en~Ciel, I have been their fan ever since I was a child.

I have been to various Jrock concerts, though I can’t go to many since I live on an Island in south Japan (Awaji Island) and am unable to travel

But some of the Jrock concerts I have been to are:
    HYDE x5
    VAMPS x2
    Dir en grey x1
    the GazettE x1
    L’Arc~en~Ciel x3
    Plastic Tree x4

My actual name is Hideko (it sounds like a grandma name so hiko is cooler)

You can send me a message whenever you want!

So I’m very new to Japanese music (I’ve been delving into it for less than a week), but I’ve started to get the impression that Japanese vocalists place more emphasis on style than technique. I’m not expert on vocal technique by any means, but even I can tell how lacking in technique many of the singers I’ve heard are. However, since I'm new I haven't listened to much (and some of it isn't very recent).

The only vocalists who have stood out to me thus far are Gackt, Ruki, and maybe MUCC’s vocalist (have listened to very little at this point). Though I wouldn’t put them in the category of “excellent vocalists,” they’re definitely solid, especially when compared to most of what I’ve heard.

Taka is decent, I guess, because at least he doesn’t sound like he’s struggling to hold a note, but he pretty much sounds like a less interesting Gerard Way to me. I suppose that’s not necessarily a bad thing … He did appear to be struggling with his breathing in the one live performance I watched, though. With an n of 1 that could just be a bad day, but given that the comments were praising his vocals (rather than noting that he was off), it seems like it might be the norm.

I Googled something along the lines of “best j-rock singers” and came up with a fan-ranked list, which placed Kyo in first place (the funny thing is that none of the comments were about Kyo's voice, rather that he should be ranked higher than Ruki). Obviously this sort of list is a popularity contest that I don’t put much stock in, but I’ve seen other comments praising Kyo as a vocalist. I’ve listened to a few Dir en Grey performances, but didn’t find them memorable (as in I literally have no recollection of them, even though that was two days ago), which is strange given that Dir en Grey’s music is supposedly really weird and experimental (I do remember the PVs, just not the music). Is he better in certain performances than others?

I’ve listened to a number of ballad singers, who are pleasant, but if you put them next to someone like Park Hyoshin, they seem extremely lackluster. Honestly, even SM’s roster of idol singers outdoes them by quite a lot.

I’m aware other countries have many lousy vocalists, but there also seem to be more very good ones. I've yet to be really WOWed by any Japanese vocalist, though I do enjoy a number of them.

tl;dr Am I just listening to the wrong things and missing the good vocalists, or is Japanese vocal talent a bit subpar?

reminiscing2004 reacted to Himeaimichu in Y2K Aesthetic in Visual Kei Thread
Recently, I've been getting more interested in the Y2K aesthetic. For those who don't know, the Y2K aesthetic is a collective term for the sleek futurism of the late 90's and early 2000's that manifested itself in music videos, fashion, and technology.
As Aesthetic Wiki puts it, "Y2K is an aesthetic that was most prevalent from roughly 1998 to 2003. Y2K aesthetics are often characterized by a distinct aesthetic period, encapsulating fashion, hardware design, music and furnishings shiny with tech optimism – sometimes literally. According to the Y2K Institute, some of Y2K's aspects include, tight leather pants, silver eye-shadow, shiny clothing, Oakleys, gradients, and Blobjects and Blobitecture. Most of Y2K aesthetics rely on the use of technology and slick futuristic looks, signaling the optimism a new era as people approached the millennium".

This thread is to discuss the use of the Y2K aesthetic in Visual Kei.
One of my favourite examples is the iconic music video for Yokan by Dir en Grey. This pretty much speaks for itself
And while this is definitely past the era of Y2K, the music video for Mikansei to GUILT by Phantasmagoria is definitely influenced by Y2k futurism.

My interest in visual-kei made my friend introduce me to this place, I've never been on a forum before so I think this is very interesting...! I know it's not necessarily a genre of music, but the music of the sub-culture is what intrigued me... I discovered the stuff upon meeting a vk guy.DEG was my first proper introduction, of course, but my favorites are Malice Mizer (and members of), MUCC, the Gazzte, Velvet Eden, and that's all of what's coming to mind. I don't know what else you dandy people need to know to understand what I'm doing here(?) Well, I like art... I am pretty darn extreme about some things, too. Yes! I think that's all...??

A group of aging musicians throwing the kitchen sink in a flailing effort that has too much combined skill and experience to be anything laughably bad. Unfortunately that doesn't stop it from being dreadfully boring and tedious to sit through. They're basically in this part of their careers where they are reaching into every direction, like bringing up that nu metal bounce from their past and the fascination with novelty instruments and other gimmickry to liven up the arrangements that are basically par for the course for them. A bunch of dudes who know how to make songs had a bunch of ideas and this is what came out of it.

reminiscing2004 reacted to Jigsaw9 in MUCC to release limited re-recorded anniversary single "娼婦 2020"
To mark the 20th anniversary of the release of MUCC's first-ever single "娼婦/廃" (Shoufu/Hai), the band will release a special re-recorded version titled "娼婦 2020" (Shoufu 2020). Tooru Yoshida (keyboardist/producer who has supported MUCC in various ways recently) has overseen the production of this release, while guitarist Miya dealt with remastering duties where applicable. Famed horror mangaka Junji Ito did the cover art (who also designed the band's classic "Houmura uta" cover). The single is a made-to-order product, so they will only produce as many copies as the number of orders they receive for it, starting from 2020/06/09.
