For me it's Celebrate Empty Howls, Rubbish Heap, Followers, Keigaku no yoku. I actually really like the rapping part in Values of Madness but the rest of the song falls a little short IMO.

I'm not saying he's dressed as a soldier, I'm just wondering what Japanese people think of the "Japanesque" concepts, particularly costumes based on ancient Japanese traditions etc. I guess the "western" equivalent is like vikings or something now that I think about it a bit more

    Big ones:
D (especially 7th Rose), D'espairsRay of course, Aliene Ma'riage (especially 21st Century), Girugamesh, lynch,  Sadie (though their stuff is pretty spotty IMO),  Gullet, some Kuroyume, Madeth Gray'll, Merry Go Round, some of Beast of Blood-era Malice Mizer

Other random ones that come to mind:
Nega, Grieva, VellaDonna, L'yse:nore (to some extent), Syndrome, Vice+Risk, Velze Dieulawahl, Blam Honey (if you like industrial), Chaos System

    Hi all,

My  band Tides Away has a new EP out called Dissimilar. We experiment with a lot of different genres, including EDM, gothic rock, metal, and folk.

Some of you may be familiar with my work with Licht:noir'e here (a band I started through MH), and you all know that I have a lot of VK influence in my songwriting, some of which carries over to this band as well.

You can listen to the EP here:  https://tidesaway.bandcamp.com/releases

You can find us on Soundcloud here

You can find us on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/tidesaway/

The EP is also available on Apple Music, iTunes, and Spotify.

Which songs got better mixes? I kind of skipped over Vestige.

Also pretty sure Gauze was their most expensive production, so that's probably why it sounds so good.

Honestly I think Gauze is great so I'm biased, but I would say this: Gauze treads very little new ground in any of its material, and if you've heard a lot of what VK was doing up to that point (which admittedly I hadn't at the time I first heard it), you probably wouldn't be that impressed. The limitations of Gauze are basically the limitations of that style of VK, because Gauze is the pinnacle of that sound IMO. It took a genre that was defined by quick and dirty, and gave it an injection of pop sensibility, a high budget, and lots of polish, and I think Dir en grey at that point in their career was really, really good at delivering on that sound.

Thank you all for the fascinating history on the lyrics and taboos. First I've heard of any of this.

About OP's review though, I simply cannot understand why so many people hate "audrey" so much. That's one of my favorite DEG songs.

Not feeling the new Fukai, personally.

It reminds me of the Obscure remake, in that the vocal melodies are so meandering and unsatisfying. Why take a concise, catchy vocal line and change it just to change it?

Hi guys and gals, I really want to start an online project that sounds like an oldschool VK band. I'm thinking something like an old Matina band or similar—bands like Madeth Gray'll, Shiver, L'yse:nore, La:Sadie's, early Kuroyume, early Dir en grey, La Feérie, Aliene Ma'riage, Noir Fleurir, etc.

I can play guitar, bass, drums, and/or keyboard, and I can sing, although I'd really like to find someone else to do vocals—preferably in Japanese if at all possible.

    Is anyone interested?

Cool project!  I really like the "Lay To Rest" song, and also "Dystopia."  Especially "Dystopia."  Apparently we were on the Decadent Society Volume 2 together!

As for the singing, I like it!  I think you've got a cool gothic-y voice.  Don't let the haters get to you.  You are on key, good pitch.  I'm not much of a fan of most music with screaming, so I can't comment on the screaming, as that is just a personal preference.

I've released a number of things now, and my earlier stuff, some of it I now cringe at my vocals, but some people really loved those albums.  And some reviewers tore them apart.  Some reviews were so bad they made me laugh!  Whenever an absolutely awful review comes out for my music, I think of Motley Crue describing how all their albums up until Dr. Feelgood were just ripped apart by "professional" reviewers.  They said they usually wouldn't even read reviews of their albums, but they also said that bad ones were great publicity.  They said that they really didn't care what reviewers thought because it wasn't about them, it was about the fans.

Especially on my first two albums that I sang on, I got a good bit of criticism on my vocals.  I got a lot of "he's not using his range very well" and "he sounds bored".  Largely because of that feedback, I've worked more on my voice, as I have a generally low voice.  I've gotten much more confident over the years, so now there's not much criticism.  But every once in a while there is.  I try to take that criticism with a grain of salt, put it in my mind, and maybe work on that a little for the next song.  But like Motley, for me its not about reviewers, it's about the fans.  They are a much better judge of what you are doing.

I'm by no means a guru on any of this, but I find that it helps to listen to the criticism, laugh and say "man, fu¤% that guy," think about what they meant, and how it could potentially improve your sound.

Great work, keep doing what you are doing, keep pushing the envelope, and strive to get better at what you do every single time.  If you try something and it sounds like crud, analyze the situation and get back at it.

    I'm gonna buy the album

I'm enjoying this read a lot, particularly the historical stuff.

It's funny to see people admit to thinking fondly of this stuff, because I loved this sound when it was current and I assumed I was in the minority. Around 2004 when I was just getting into VK, I was exposed more to D'espairsRay, UnsraW, Gazette, and of course Dir en grey, and that was the sound I associated with VK. I really didn't discover the "classic" sound beyond Dir en grey's early stuff until a few years later. I played in metal and -core bands in late middle school and high school so the heavy vibe spoke to me more. Truthfully I did listen to some nu-metal like Mushroomhead and KoRn but I didn't see much similarity between those bands and this style of VK until later. I'm not entirely sure why.

Where does stuff like early Devil Kitty fit in? It has some odd turntable usage (0:43) and some awkward, sort of metallic riffing but I have no idea what to make of this weird garbage.

While not as nu-metal as most of this thread, it's a fairly early example at 2003, and I always enjoyed this song more than I care to admit:

I'm not familiar with this version of the song which is apparently a more recent re-recording, but I always dug the original's riffs:

This is a good example too. It's like if Coal Chamber was fronted by a child:

They are partial re-recordings and totally remixed and remastered. New vocal parts and melodies, new guitar solos, and some other things.
