  1. Ok so can someone tell me what people mean by shoegaze? Because from what I've gathered it's not even a musical genre and has no defining characteristics. But yet I've literally seen people argue as to weather or not a band is shoegaze and discuss it as though it's a genre. Could someone help me out?

For some Japanese takes on the genre:

Coaltar of the Deepers' Yukari Telepath or No Thank You (COTD are not really the 'standard' gaze band tbh, there's elements of death metal, new wave, and other stuff there as well from time to time)

My Dead Girlfriend's material is stellar overall

      Kinoko Teikoku's Uzu ni Naru

      cruyff in the bedroom

      Tokyo Shoegazer

      Luminous Orange

      Mixing Japanese and Western:

      Asobi Seksu

Other bands worth checking out (maybe): Curve (sometimes have sort of an 'industrial' twist on things) The Depreciation Guild (shoegaze/dreampop + chiptune), The Angelic Process (shoegaze + .. drone metal i guess? basically sounds like I imagine drowning in a sand pit feels like) Catherine Wheel and Swervedriver (both alt. rock influenced shoegaze, so it's sort of more fastpaced than the usual)

@TokageThanks. COTD sounds interesting but I'll check them all out for sure.
