    Ok so can someone tell me what people mean by shoegaze? Because from what I've gathered it's not even a musical genre and has no defining characteristics. But yet I've literally seen people argue as to weather or not a band is shoegaze and discuss it as though it's a genre. Could someone help me out?

      To me, shoegaze is basically chillout music (Plastic Tree, the Novembers, etc.)

      It's supposed to submerse you with its melodies, that are supposed to be played in sync, so it sounds like no instrument is distinguishable. Like a wall of music, either soft or loud. The singers voice tends to match the tone.
