  1. The first one that came to mind when I saw the title was Backdrop Cinderella, but since they've been mentioned I'll throw a few other names in.

    Yellow Studs

If you like raspy vocals like Chiba Yusuke (TMGE, The Birthday, etc.), Yellow Studs is probably one of the first bands that will come up when you look for bands with a similar singer. Their music has a similar sort of retro vibe, but it's generally much more jazzy. The vocalist also plays the piano, accordion, banjo, and some other stuff, so their sound goes in a bit of a folk-y/country direction sometimes. They have an acoustic side project called "Team Garakuta" or "Yellow Studs Acoustic Band" where you can hear more of that sort of thing.

    Danablu

I'm a really big fan of NOA, which was an emo/pop-punk band that had two vocalists that sounded nothing like each other. One sang only in semi-decent English, and one sang in both really bad Engrish and Japanese.

The one that sings in English and the drummer have a new band called Danablu that's pretty similar to NOA. Not as weirdly all over the place, but still enjoyable, IMO. I still love Nishiura's voice, and they've got the same sort of simple DIY aesthetic I liked about NOA.

    THE BEATMOTORS

If you're looking for something straightforward and kind of retro, THE BEATMOTORS are a good choice. Unfortunately, their guitarist, who was a big part of the goofy, over the top charm they had going, just left recently. But they're still at it, as far as I know. Their singer has this really rough, grouchy-sounding rock voice, and he's got a lot of energy. He's got kind of an Elephant Kashimashi thing going. Lol, when I first saw a video of him I thought he was 40-something and he was only about 25...

  2. I like just playing files on my computer or iPod (I don't like using my phone for music since the battery runs out too fast, so I still just use a separate device) the best since access to the songs can't be revoked randomly if an artist gets into trouble with their label, stops paying to renew the service, etc., but I mostly use Spotify for new releases these days, as you can use it with a free account and at least that in some way contributes to the artists and shows them they have people listening to their new work.

I know some artists monitor their Spotify plays closely, so I like to think it's at least encouraging for them to see the numbers going up, even if it's not all that useful financially compared to an iTunes or CD purchase.

I will buy a CD if there is no digital release and I absolutely must have something, but there's usually only about 1~2 releases a year I want that badly that I can't download or stream.

  3. Right now, mainly just Jack Caper, More and Asty. I like Kizu, MIMIZUQ and HOLLOWGRAM as well, but I haven't been watching them as closely.

I'd have said LEZARD before, but they're disbanding soon and I've still never actually listened to a full album of theirs all the way through, so...

  4. Gonna give this a shot again, although I never seem to get very many releases in.

:5.0: Could end up being one of my favourite releases ever

    :4.5:Favourite releases of the year

Half time Old  - CRISP YELLOW ["Tsuki no Tomo" MV] [Spotify]

I like this one a lot better than the last two releases they put out. I think they balanced Masaharu's angsty teenager energy with their more upbeat side really well this time.

4s4ki - Iei ni Yeah ["I LOVE ME" MV] [Spotify]

Wasn't really wild about her at first because I felt like all her stuff sounded the same and it was generally too mellow for my taste, but after hearing "I LOVE ME" and "35.5" from this EP I had a major change of heart.

    :4.0:Great

LEGO BIG MORL - KEHAI [Spotify]

I have kind of mixed feelings on how some of the songs sound on the actual release, but the live stream performance of the full album they did made them sound so good that I have to rate it highly. I really like the live version of the title track.

i.D.A - LRRH. ["LRRH." MV] [Spotify]

They're one of the few new-ish VK bands that caught my attention this year. I kinda feel like they're not going to last too long since they don't seem to have that many fans, but I like what I've heard so far. Especially the singer. The way he screams is cute.

DJ CHARI & DJ TATSUKI - GOKU VIBES feat. Tohji, Elle Teresa, UNEDUCATED KID & Futuristic Swaver ["GOKU VIBES" MV]

Tohji, Elle Teresa and Futuristic Swaver was not a combination I was expecting to see this year. Works surprisingly well. Lol, I didn't realize until I saw the lyrics written out that he was saying "I'm Super Saiyan". Somehow I never made the connection in my head that the title meant Son Goku.

    :3.5:Good

été - episode  ["Bipolar" MV] [Spotify]
^I've been watching this band closely since their single "I am" because I felt like they'd be really cool once they polished their sound up a bit (Well, that, and I'm a sucker for whispered/breathy vocals and dudes with high-pitched singing voices). Since they got signed to a label, they've been releasing new music super fast, and I think they've improved a lot with each release.

    THURSDAY'S YOUTH - hinatanonioi [Spotify]

MAKE MY DAY - Mind Haven ["Mind Haven" MV] [Spotify]

I mean, it feels a bit generic metalcore - especially the lyrics - but I had a lot of fun listening to it. There's something about the screaming in "Money" that always makes me laugh.

TYOSiN - blue blue ["HYPE" MV] [Spotify]

I was super excited for this one, since I listened to his previous EP "dive" a lot this year and the lead track "HYPE" is the song that sold me on him in the first place, but he released the two strongest tracks as singles really far in advance, and the rest just feel a bit underwhelmng by comparison.

    LIPHLICH - KEREN KIKANSHA [Spotify]

    :3.0:Good enough

    :2.5:OK

    :2.0:Not so good

Tohji - Oreo ["Oreo" MV] + Propella ["Propella" MV]

Tohji's silliness is a big part of his charm, but these singles just feel so one-note to me. Not feeling the MVs either. I was really surprised, because his collab tracks have been great this year.

    :1.0:Couldn't finish it

  5. Man, Spikey John makes such beautiful MVs. Love all the cobalt blue and orange in this one.

He really does a great job of capturing that sort of "We don't live close enough to the city, so we've gotta commute down or make our own fun" vibe.

Or maybe I'm just projecting because the colours remind me of a painting I made a few years back about transit back when I commuted like 3~4 hours a day to school and back.

  6. I'd only seen the first half of this performance before, so I had no idea that Moment Joon sings too. Didn't know he was such a petite guy either. Guess it's because there weren't any other people in the videos I'd seen of him for scale. The contrast with Black Bass is pretty striking. Lol, I like him so much more now.

    Hey, here's the trailer!

Pretty fun game if you ask me, also much moaning. Not in the mood to play it right now although I'll probably go back to it in a while and main Godo Tsukasa but lol hey

Lol thanks, I've actually never gotten around to checking out the Kaikan Phrase series in any form, so I'm kind of intrigued. Might have to check it out when I have more time.

Well so Tatsuhisa is now a married man and I feel kinda uncomfortable going to bed listening to some married oldie moaning

That's it /end journey as a seiota fujoshi

Hold up, what is this Tatsuhisa game, and where can I find a trailer for it? I don't follow seiyuu, but I like those two OLDCODEX songs I know...

  9. I tend to like promo pics that are a bit silly.

This is from around when Hysteric Panic released "Cinderella Syndrome", I think.

Takeshi Ueda around the release of AA='s "#5". I just realized the crown is made of copper wire, which makes it even better.

Oh you saw the series too? What did you think of the last episode?

Speaking of vampire shit, I barely find out that Netflix's Castlevania had a season 2.

It was an experience alright lol.

I mean, some episodes I was like "WTF happened to this series" and other times I'm thinking "omg these writers are trying too hard" (i.e. the battle music was too intense for the animation and that "trip" Alucard had towards the end of the last episode after someone died).

    It was OK haha.

I didn't get to the end yet - I just got to the part where he's wondering why he has a toilet in the facility, and then I got too busy with work to go any further. No spoilers please. ;)

I always meant to give the Netflix Castlevania a try too, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Was the first season good? Is it a good introduction for people like me that know literally nothing about the franchise?
