I stay as far away from the culture and music of Kpop as I can (difficult considering my circle of friends right now are all Korean and listen to it). It's just never appealed to me and the perception that I get is that it's done more harm to the Korean music industry than good. It hasn't allowed there to be space for different genres of music. Like, where are the hard rock bands and experimental electronic artists?

I think the burgeoning K-indie scene has created a more open space for actual artists to write and produce their own music and it's great to see some individual creativity. But even so, there's a certain sound you can peg to the scene and it's ended up creating, from my perspective anyway, an alternatively stylized sub-sect of cookie-cutter production in rap, rnb/hip hop, downtempo pop.

I'm not saying the music itself is bad, just that I would like to see more support for lesser-loved genres of music like hardcore, metal, and experimental music. You just don't see bands like Dir en grey and Deviloof, Mono and Boris or Midori and Otoboke Beaver from Korea.

I assume you have heard of Madmans Epsrit? They’re from Korea and they’re basically Black Metal

It sucks that K-Pop is dominating Korea instead of these guys or literally any other rock or metal band

  2. Anyone feel like all of your closest friends just ignore you and are just being nice just because? Cause I sure do. I always feel like they just pretend to be my friend when in reality, they think I’m an annoying piece of shit.

I wish I had no friends cause I can live my life without a bunch of fakers. Hell, might as well not exist because that’s what my “friends” want. They don’t want me anymore.

About time. These guys were terrible from the beginning and they only had one decent song, which of course Patrik didn't write. They went full retard and tried to jump on the VK bandwagon 10 years too late, they put all of their effort into laughable music videos (sorry, "PV'S"), and the only decent singer they ever had left because he couldn't stand this gay weeb shit.

Bataar went the direction it did, I think, because Patrik wanted an avenue into rubbing shoulders with people that could get him closer to meeting Kaoru of Dir en grey. That's all this was. They took the VK look to make themselves more marketable to VK fans in Japan. They played a show (or two) in Japan and even did an entire set of Dir en grey covers during one performance. Everything about these guys was fraudulent. Their music, their style -- everything was fake.

Patrik and I were chummy several years ago, and because of his obsession with Dir en grey they created the name "Bataar" to mirror the mystique surrounding "Dir en grey". He told me there was a "deeper meaning" to "Bataar" and that maybe one day we'd discover it. blah blah blah. All the nonsense Dir en grey spouts and he aped that too. He aped Kaoru's style, his guitars, his appearance live, his movements live -- this guy was a shameless Kaoru fanboy and all it did was make me cringe. After that first EP I stopped listening to these guys, and I SURE AS HELL wasn't going to listen to them with another Swedish weeb as a vocalist. Fucking christ.

Pffffffffffffft. Bruh, Dir En Grey is a wayyyy more creative name.

Also, the whole #ReserectVK thing was stupid lmao. What was Patrik like as a person?

I'm a HARD stan for Dir, but TWOM is easily pretty uninspired. It's not bad, nor in terms of production either in terms of composition. Rather, it's actually good, but still isn't something I would add to my playlist ever. For that kind of doomy ballads that are a trademark of the band I have several starting from Mazohyst of Decadence.

I can see that. With the new direction, I would agree the TWOM sounds like it’s from TIW, but I wouldn’t call it uninspired if you ask me.

MOD is great, but I sometimes skip it when I listen to Gauze. The Mode of Gauze version is also pretty good.

Production wise it sounds find, but compositionally I meant that I find it lacking.

Eh, I mean I’m fine with the composition tbh.

I always feel like I stan Diru way to much lol.

Honestly, I wish I liked it more. There are some interesting ideas that they flirt with in the first and last third of the song, but I don't think they played with them enough. It comes off more like a polished demo in its currents state. I love those songs too, but this one just didn't have the same impact on me as those did.

I disagree. I think it sounds really good and the production great. Honestly, I’d say it’s probably their best single so far. 🤷🏻‍♀️

See, but I wonder if it's a matter of stylistic choices or poor production choices. I've heard other bands I like with lots of music industry experience (Japanese and other countries) release albums with some very questionable audio quality. Like, it'll be their 6th album and their album will be brickwalled and have clipped audio everywhere, or instruments balanced poorly. To me, those things are not a stylistic choice but amateur audio production. I haven't followed the release of this album at all so don't know anything about what the band has said about inspiration for the album or any production decisions, so maybe they did consciously decide on this sound, but just from my listening experience that's not the feeling I got. I may not be able to, but it's great you're able to overlook the production aspect of music since it allows you enjoy more music.

Is that a "Fantano" rating I hear?

Yeah, I agree their discography is really solid. There isn't anything I absolutely hate (except R to the Core) and they experiment a lot so they have a wide range of material.  But I still think World of Mercy is a burning Rubbish Heap 😂

Shame. I think TWOM is amazing. IMO it’s up there with their best long songs, mine being Macabre (The OG and Remake) and Vinushka. Akuro no Oka is up there as well

  8. The thing about Diru is that their discography is so wildly diverse so your bound to get some weird rankings.

They’re one of those bands were no one is settled on a best album or one that’s a masterpiece above the rest.

I think it's fine. But even when compared in a vacuum, I personally don't think it stacks very high next to their previous efforts. I know it's a matter of taste, but from the other albums I can find at least 1 or 2 tracks I like. Whereas, with TIW, I can't remember a single riff even after listening through it 4 times. Granted, I haven't sat down with it as much as their older work. But there's just something missing from it compositionally and sonically for me that fail to grasp my initial interest.  I found albums like TMOAB and DSS much more challenging to get into, but they had my attention and I wanted to revisit them. TIW is not bad by any means, but if I'm being honest I think it's just not what I was hoping for from the band. But a lot of people like the album and they can't please everyone right?

I can see why people dislike it, especially if your a fan of DSS or Uroboros.

To me, I honestly couldn’t give two shits about the production. If anything, I like the more raw sound they went for. Is TIW a perfect album? No, but I do enjoy the hell out of TIW. Probably a light 8/10 IMO.

To be fair tho, I don’t really hate all their albums. There isn’t one album in Diru’s discography that I wouldn’t consider bad. I just enjoy certain albums over others. If anything, my ranking is a bit weird tbh lol

Feel free to disagree but that’s just my two cents
