22 years ago, on January 24, 1997, DIR EN GREY played their first ever show at Nagano J.
Kyo, Kaoru, Die and Shinya arrived the day before and met Toshiya in a parking lot.
They stayed at Toshiya's parents' house over night and on the next day, they booked two hours in a studio to rehearse.
In the evening, there was an event and the future members of DIR EN GREY performed on stage together for the first time.
Since they had not thought of a band name, they called themselves DEATHMASK and played around four Kuroyume cover songs.
Toshiya also performed with D+L as their support guitarist on that evening.
So since it's already the 24th in Japan, today marks 22 years since the true beginning of DIR EN GREY! 😊

I so agree. When the Internet says that VK scene isn't actually a LITTLE well-known in Japan is something difficult to believe to us who have VK on their daily basis, but yeah, even filling a two-days Budokan every tour finale makes you just "popular"... I mean, you actually are popular, but in terms of 1 in a scale of 10. Let's say you are known but ot relevant. Average pople in Japan actually know what VK is, but it seems so weird to them that they have literally zero real interest in getting into it. All they do is to listen to the big 90s classics that left their mark with fire into the pop charts (X, hide, Luna Sea, L'arc, Glay, and MAYBE some "Melty Love" by Shazna... and you stop counting). Gazette made their name into the Japanese metal scene, though, but general Japanese metal audience just have this really sexist predjuice about "VK being for teenage girls", also many of them just look down over the local scene and tend to like only foreign music (this last opinion makes me instantly puke; god, how I wish I lived in Japan just to get really involved with all those awesome artists they have...).

Oh yeah I forgot to translate that Utafumi teaser lol.

    Kid: *Screaming*
“Can you not become one?” (I think he’s acting like he’s Kyo hyping up the crowd)
    *Screaming*

Mom: “Yoshio, you’re good at (singing/screaming) Dir en grey.”

Kid: (Something like “I’m letting out my pain” or something? It’s kinda hard for me to understand him here but he for sure says the word pain).
    “Amazing, right?”

Mom: “I wonder if you’ll do an encore?”

    Kid: “Okay!”

The promos for Vestige of Scratches had those weird animated shorts featuring creatures that represented the band.

Also, I work with several Japanese people and none of them have even heard of Dir en grey. They’re mostly familiar with L’arc and X Japan though.

It seems they went all-out with promoting that one single, lol. Haven't seen similar commercials for their other recent-ish stuff.

The only 2 ways i can think of is a japanese spotify or itunes. Or grab an sd for cheap  card and pop it in your phone. For organization offline i use an app called Blackplayer (You can grab the free ver.) to help organize everything. They Have as bunch of tabs from by track, artist and album. I prefer using the artist tab its polished nicely and they take most album art and some artist pictures from last.fm in the Manually search album or artist. Just make sure you get the names right (Kanji is preferred). If you cant find what your looking for you can always tap and hold down for a second or two on the album, song and artist you want and hit "edit"to edit tags. Another option tap and hold the song, album and artist hit the "Manually search album art" or artist. If your not having any luck hit "get from gallery" and download the image off google or just properly tag in windows. (note: Sometimes Transfering songs from back and forth from windows to android screws the tags i would prefer using the app and the instructions i gave.) I hope this helps

Actually what I find calming is the very thing that brought you here. I've never been a huge fan of DEG but I do like some of their songs and Obscure and Saku are always my go to songs when I need calm. I don't know, loud and fast just has that affect on me I guess. 🙃

As for "unique", my gateway to a lot of hip-hop has been jazz. Listening to more melodic tracks kinda ate away at the distance I had with traditional rap, and helped me embrace more "mainstream" artists.

Not really sure about what you're looking for, and I don't really listen to rap metal so I can't help you there. But I do listen to a lot of rap that is dark or brutal, and are quite popular among metal fans.

Scarlxrd is pretty fucking metallic and way, way, way more brutal and metallic sounding than any "rap metal" act out there. Brutal beats, screaming and all kind of shit going on. But it's not your regular wimpy rap metal shit. You won't find those wimpy, half-groovy riffs or anything.

Death Grips is also very metallic sounding, albeit not metal. Experimental and brutal rap, but without the wimpy side.

Bones and Suicideboys just because they're dark as fuck.

Run DMC are a must for fans of rap and rock. The perfect combination.

A mixtape put together by Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust fame. Dark and twisted Mephis rap.

Stuff like Necro, Circle of Tyrants, Heavy Metal Kings, Jedi Mind Tricks and related bands might also be of interest. Again, not rap metal or anything tho.

And this might be of interest. Not exactly metal, but got a lot in common with some of the rap metal bands of the past.

Doesn't have to be loaded with screams, a few screams here and there or even just a single scream/growl in whole song will do.

    Perfect example -

i got into metal 4 months ago when somebody recommended me dir en grey on my thread titled 'music with screams'or something like that on myanimelist. its the first and only metal band that i was into until a couple of days ago.(currently im also following dadaroma and the black swan) My main motive for coming here is asking(begging?) for recommendations so i apologize in advance if i seem like annoying .

    Side question -
whats are you guys top 10 acoustic/unplugged songs from metal/rock bands? (i might be creating separate 1 or 2 threads regarding this question if i didnt got good response in this thread....my this introduction thread was actually just an excuse for asking this question so dont let me down and name some great acoustic/unplugged songs folks!)

Just discovered this band recently and it's been so satisfying, acoustic screamo emo perfection

    (singing starts at 2:11)

They have an EP called "The Distance Between" that has better recording quality and is awesome, but these two demo songs are my favorite by far.

FOSCOR70 reacted to BrenGun in how do you decide which bands to follow?
I'm really picky in choosing bands to support.

I listen to a song once, and if they didn't put inside what I like, I simply won't listen again. whenever they are loved by many or not.
But still some bands I check every release in hope that they deliver something amazing, and that can take a couple of years. But I usually can hear that with listing only to 1-2 songs.

But I totally don't care about looks at all. A band can look hot and horny but if they cannot play their instrument then I also don't care about them.

But now days I almost do not listen to visual kei, most band pour out the same boring sound, I usually support bands with members around or over 40ties...

FOSCOR70 reacted to suji in how do you decide which bands to follow?
    1) they have to be goth or at least sound good
    2) the singer has to be hawt/on the verge of anorexia

The Black Swan unfortunately is already disbanding  their frontman Jin is most famous for a band called NEGA from yester-decade if it interests you. Hey but keep an eye on the news section here, there's new bands sprouting basically every few weeks lol!

Dir en Grey do a lot of acoustic and "unplugged" versions of their songs  and then releases them on the 2-disc special editions or bonus track slots at the end of their albums There's a good number of them now!

  25. Thanks

Hi, if you're only interested in rock/metal bands (not only japanese bands) I can recommend you some: start trying Borknagar's "Origin", it's a fantastic acoustic album, other metal bands into acoustic are: "Sig:Ar:Tyr", "Ulver" (the album kveldssanger), and "Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik"
if you want only japanese bands here's my top 10:

-Rentrer en Soi - Last Word
-Dir en grey - Akuro no Oka
    -12012 - The Swim
    -Sadie - Silent Eve
-X Japan - Crucify My Love
    -Luna Sea - Gravity
    -Glay - Way of difference
    -Janne da arc - DOLLS
    -the GazettE - Pledge
    -Vistlip - Chimera

Edit: oops, I listed ballads on that top 10, sorry 😩
