also, no promoters actually like vk anymore

i think this hits the nail on the head of this problem.

when you're looking to curate something (and i believe this is a large part of an organizer's job), you need to know your shit and actually care about the acts you're bringing.

taking a quick look at the VK acts b7klan are working with, my first thought is 'i don't believe you for a second that you actually believe these bands have potential in europe'.

  2. DEZERT should definitely cover one of their early 2000's tracks.

    Spoiler

    like this!

But seriously I love DEZERT's dramatic presentation and although they seemingly draw a lot from MUCC they could probably do an interesting interpretation to Zetsubou (or Bouzenjitsu, that would also be cool!).

Also Polysics doing Fuzz sounds exciting although I would also love for them to cover something from Karma.

  3. OK so this one didn't happen at a live and I'm risking exposing myself for the 14-year-old fangirl trapped in an old hag's body that I am (as if I haven't already lol), but here goes.

Went to Tower Records Cafe in Shibuya. It was MUCC Day, the band was doing a live broadcast on nico and the cafe had a special MUCC-themed menu. My friend and I just wanted to hang out and suspected nothing even when the waitress asked us if we're cool with being photographed/recorded.

    Fast forward to this scene:

I always thought I'd be a lot chiller if I ever met a musician I really liked in person. I was expecting too much of myself.

Interpret this for me. What isn't coming next year? I am so confused.

I can't believe it's also taken me this long to ask this question, but what does Yoshiki's hospitalization have to do with the physical pressing and release of the album? Where did the idea that it would be delayed again come from? The recording should already be done. The accompanying tour can always be delayed. It probably should, considering how a strong breeze could put Yoshiki out of commission at this point. If they haven't announced anything by now, it should still be coming out....but then where are the previews or album cover or even a track list?

At this point, if the recordings actually existed, the internet would've been flooded with promos, advertisements and 'buy all 5 versions get a Yoshiki hug-pillow' giveaways. He's not the person who's supposed to print and package the CDs, so what's the problem?

I guess milking his medical condition, traveling to France 2 weeks post-surgery for movie-related promotions and saying he might not be able to tour next year in a way that could also insinuate he might be dead by then is a lot more fun?

(Bonus: drama has the potential of making everyone forget they promised to release an album by the end of the month??)

  5. You know how sometimes you go years turning a blind eye on bullshit and drama-queendom and then something seemingly not out of the ordinary makes you flip?

    So this tweet.

    Spoiler

I know a lot of vkei is people being really emotionally invested in bands and their narratives, but this is just BAD. I don't wanna think about how some of the people who are TRULY invested in this might react if something happens.

  6. Anything by BAISER!!! :) Yukari just sounds so happy even when the song itself sounds kinda dark, idk. Definitely goes with my definition for summer!

    Spoiler

Psycho le Cemu's Ai no Uta is very summery. Their cover of Roman Hikou too, but that's cheating.

What I addressed however, is that even when I do talk about non-Japanese music, which I mostly grew up on, I always look like a fucking idiot just cuz I don't know as much about that like I do about Japanese music. I always have some certain fucking know-it-all try to "correct" me on what shit I'm supposed to like and my actual tastes just get shit on. What the fuck happened to discussing your faves? That kind of attitude from western music fans has always turned me off and that's why I really don't discuss music a lot anymore, and it's definitely why I've strayed away from western music.

    I feel this so much.

I always thought of myself as a music geek but at some point most of my geek-powers drained into mostly Japanese music and BAM, now I don't know shit about music when I talk to 'serious' music people (= people who listen to western music?).

Mind, I'm by no means an expert, just very enthusiastic. But so are most of them?

Could also do without the 8 minutes of watching the girl who goes home crying / packing up.

Agreed. Probably the weirdest editing decision they've ever had. Like bye gurl don't need a whole segment of you packing up. It was especially cringey with Valentina, and I love Valentina. It just felt forced.

  9. everyone and their grandma are flailing in excitement over this week's episode and i'm like 'seriously?'

    Spoiler

it was the most basic makeover episode ever. apart from sasha literally nobody did anything memorable and the idea of taking crew members was like... is the production out of ideas? lol sure, some of them are really likeable dudes but it just wasn't interesting imo.

I really wish Kis-My-Ft2 weren't given such bland, sub-par songs, because the rollerskate choreography is fabulous and Kitayama Hiromitsu is super cute.

Shake It Up and the pre-debut Kis-My-_ songs are great and Fire Beat gets a pass because of the choreography, but almost everything else I've heard from them sounds like a filler track that got rejected by ten other groups before they ended up stuck with it. I mean, I'm not expecting high art from Johnny's groups or anything, but the songs aren't even catchy most of the time.

Then again, I haven't been paying much attention to them for the past few years. Maybe they released something good recently?

Kis-My-Ft2 is probably the best example of JE mishandling (oh snap) the few talented idols they do manage to produce. They were kept as juniors for far too long and when they finally debuted it was way past their momentum and everything was just... meh?? since then. Tragic.

  11. Ooh this is a cool topic!

My parents listen to a mix of soviet rock and pop, western rock bands (Queen, AD/DC, Aerosmith) old MTV hits and current alt rock. It's actually fun to think about how their tastes in music developed, influenced by their environment. They grew up during the perestroika, when all the fun began - local artists could record without getting shit from the government and it was a lot easier to get your hands on western music. Then the 90s came along and they (especially my mom) were glued to MTV. So I grew up listening to a bunch of styles and genres. One of my first memories is how when I was a kid my mom and I would wait for Erasure's Always video to come up on MTV. lol

But Russian rock is definitely their favorite. One of the songs we'd listen to a lot during car rides etc. was Chto Takoye Osen ("what's autumn") by DDT. These guys are pretty cool, and I was surprised to find out they're still active.

    Spoiler

I think this song is one of the reasons I'm drawn to very... emotional, Nostalgia-kei stuff. So much feels in that voice! Another thing I like about soviet/Russian rock is that many bands seemed to sing about space. Even the chorus of the one I linked to above goes "autumn, there are ships waiting in the sky/ autumn, it would be nice to get away from Earth" -- I don't blame you man.

Another family favorite is this gem:

    Spoiler

It's basically all about "we're in space, our mothers miss us, we dream about the green green grass on Earth".

Kinda makes me wonder how they never got into David Bowie. :P

tl;dr my parents like rock music and songs about space and this is why I'm weird.

  12. I was in the first row for MUCC's culture center live in Mito last week, and when they switched parts for their first encore Tatsuro played the bass and I could see there was a guy holding a big cardboard sign in the gap between the seats and the stage, running after him as he moved on stage. Then I saw the sign had bass tabs written on it. He was still messing it up and it was very cute. It got even funnier when they used the smoke machine during Ranchuu and he was squinting to look at the tabs through the smoke. I'm a sucker for silly gags like this so it made me really happy.

When I lived in Tokyo and bused to Osaka or Nagoya, I'd often be on a bus with a bunch of other bangya doing the same, which was a cool way to make friends. I think sometimes people get shy about approaching Japanese bangya, but usually they're pretty nice about it, especially if the person you chat up has also come by themselves. Then you'll have a friend next time you go, or they can introduce you to other fans. Beyond trading, it's helped me get saizen a few times, better ticket numbers, or limited tour goods when I couldn't come in time to make the buppan start time.

I always get shy around Japanese fans/bangya, to the ridiculous point that yesterday I was next to this girl and she was alone and looked very friendly but the only interaction we ended up having is after the live, when we spent like 5 minutes apologizing to each other about accidentally bumping our heads while moshing. D:

Maybe spending 6 hours on a bus with people could be more beneficial for that purpose. Or seizing the moment and actually TALKING to people. I think that would be my tip - don't be me, talk to people, they all seem so nice!

Anyway I'm spoiled so I always find a way to get home the same day - the furthest I've traveled so far for a live was from Tokyo to Ibaraki.
