Ada Suilen reacted to Karma’s Hat in DADAROMA - 「dadaism ♯3」⎡"review"⎦
DADAROMA is, by all accounts available to me, one of the handful of bands from the new crop that have skyrocketed in stature and popularity to the levels previously held by the mid 2000’s indie stalwarts, crashing the party with probably the best case of intuitive visual kei marketing since conditional disbandment by first releasing Oboreru Sakana on Youtube for all gaijins to easily enjoy. Immediate hit in the west relatively speaking, due to its accessibility both in sound and availability, they’ve been on a continual upward surge since. And now two DADAism’s later, the third in the series has just dropped coinciding with the third year into their run.

Having now amassed a decent amount of bulk into their discography one can finally make some observations what DADAROMA is, and what they are about. What to note specifically, is that the overall image of their sound is uniquely scattered, and yet aesthetically consistent. Ever since their debut a polarity has been attributed to them; a struggle between the metalcore influence against their wacky, almost The GazettE-esque light-heartedness and a tendency to stick to more traditional nu-metal visual kei riffs and vocal stylings. At this point, three years on from their debut, it can probably be said that this is a false observation. Out of a discography of 47 or so songs, only about 4 or 5 put on their striped deathcore socks, while the rest tread the line of either appropriating the odd stylistic trick from the style or settle comfortably into the visual kei ballad/mid-tempo song territory. What does remain consistent however is their imagery of clowns, sex, clichéd visual kei political commentary and a very loud production that’s as slick as it gets. Looking at the entirety of their output from the past three years one notices that they’ve always been kind of the same; looking, sounding and acting pretty much like they’ve always done and whatever had been mistakenly attributed as a stylistic shift was merely a case of someone being unfamiliar with them. The palette of DADAROMA just happens to be very broad, and they happen to divulge in all the different aspects of it cyclically.

What I do think is true however, is that they do some things better than others, and DADAISM 3 is a prime example of it. In the third release of their EP series we see a band distilling all their worst traits into 20-minute slog that’s everything I hope this band will not be about in the future.

In their prime DADAROMA uses the interplay of their ability to use metalcore and traditional visual kei’s melodramatic potency to a great effect. In their first PV tracks Oboreru Sakana and Ame no Waltz they bang out a Suicide Silence 101 knock-off and whispery vk vocals at exactly the right times, and climax like the sinking titanic with a lazy vk fade out for the centuries. If perfect 2010’s visual kei was engineered in a laboratory, it’d sound like these two songs did. Fucking tremendous.

While for some of the subsequent PV’s they’d showcase their knack for doing other things, I believe that even if they didn’t continue chugging like before, at least they always stayed fun and sexy. When in form, Yoshiatsu gives a degree of gravity to everything he is on and there is no denying what a technically able band there’s behind him; so even when appropriating INSIDE BEAST or being really tacky with Nightmare Before Christmas Tim Burtony jingles, they’re awesome. With DADAISM 3 being something which they haven’t been before: boring.

Oddly enough starting out with a high note, DADAROMA’s PV cut this time is MASTURBATION that horrified a segment of the people on this board, and here I’ll make a case for it: MASTURBATION is interesting, loud and very obnoxious. One valuable life lesson I’ve learned from a childhood of watching pro-wrestling is that any reaction is better than no reaction. There’s an inherent value to the over the topness, and especially when it’s quite fitting for a band that’s always been kind of carney, and most importantly sincerely self-aware. Could I do without another mid-period Marilyn Manson dance live song? Yes, but I don’t hate it either and I kind of appreciate it for what it is. Despite everything it still bangs hard and remains true to the band’s spirit.

Things halt to a standstill right afterwards however, when DADAROMA apparently decides to churn out a EP’s worth of mid-tempo ballads and nu-nu-visual kei bangers, channelling pop Lynch and the worm-eaten corpse of that version of Girugamesh nobody liked. I’m making it sound worse than it is, but for a band that’s been so consistent a lull like this is both alarming and a curious choice. Before in songs like Yume Tarareba and Zouka what worked in their favour is both their colourful concept and the contrast in the sound of all their elements. Things that were generic were made cool by their skill and unique character. When a band like this then slows down and makes a collection of energetic live songs and heartfelt bittersweet ballads, I become disaffected when they fall short of the grand theatre of what they could be. Romance Gray is immediately forgettable compared to other songs structured the same way with the sampled rainfall and everything; Itoshi teru doesn’t hold a candle to the songs they’ve made before in a similar style either, and in fact every other song on here can as well be categorised into “they’ve done it before, and they’ve done it better.” Sincerely it is the first time this band has done something twice, and now it’s an EP full of very matter of fact diddies that lack the edge of their prior material, aside from the PV cut that’s a Risley Circus B-side with crass lyrics as its saving grace.

When this band takes its foot off the pedal, they can start sounding very generic and tired. This can be circumvented by doing things different. Working with your unique concept, not ripping off Lynch and utilising the tools at your disposal in ways that hasn't been done in the scene before. DADAISM 3 is a paint by the numbers EP from a very professional band no matter how you look at it; it doesn’t hit even close to as hard as 1 or have the diversity of 2. If they’ll settle on treading the same ground like a DOGMA Gazette junior, then they’ll absolutely have to bring back the deathcore for some desperately needed flavour, or otherwise we are due for redux of NOW and GO era Girugamesh. If the history of this band is anything to go by then they'll rebound shortly, but there's always that doubt...

To celebrate our little Gothic princess' return, I have dived back into her discography, and based solely on my preferences, have composed a list of what I believe to be her best songs, ranked. From the best to the very best. This list will go beyond Nana's quite minimal PV/single works, since there's so few, but won't be expanding across her projects outside of her solo works from 2002-2009 (Loveless and THE TEENAGE KISSERS). There's just too much perfection on this tiny palette as is! Covers have also been blacklisted due to it not being original, solo material.

Check out the 'KEYWORDS' to make your searching easier to suit your own taste. I hope you find something to enjoy of hers!

    Who is Kitade Nana?

Kitade Nana (北出菜奈) is a Japanese rock artist. She is affiliated with BIG APPLE and signed under Sony Music Entertainment, and has even released albums in both the United States and Europe. She debuted in 2003 with the single "Kesenai Tsumi", which was used as the first ending theme to Full Metal Alchemist anime. She has followed this with many other tie ins, from the anime Jigoku Shoujo ("Tsukihana") and drama opening to anego ("Kiss or Kiss"). After the release of her debut album, she had started wearing and representing gothic lolita fashion, and started modeling for magazines such as CUTiE, and companies from BABY to her favourite brand, THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT. Though her popularity began to dwindle after this time, she continues to garner a loyal fan base due to her status as a gothic lolita model.

悲しみのキズ (Kanashimi no Kizu) - Scars of Sadness - 7th single, was the theme song of PS2 game Fullmetal Alchemist 3: Kami wo Tsugu Shoujo. Simple yet effective.
eighteen sky - The closing, ballad track from her debut album, "18 -eighteen-". Gorgeous.
サイレン (Siren) - Image song for the Japanese releases of the Canadian cartoon series, Ruby Gloom. Released under the pseudonym of Ruby Gloom. Her best energetic number!

"リビルド" by a crowd of rebellion
"rebuild" by a crowd of rebellion

@doombox got me on the acor train a few years back and I haven't looked back since! While the band is known to produce some freakout tracks here and there, their new digital single "rebuild" falls on the more emotional end of their sound spectrum. Having said that, the music is still pretty high-octane with speedy riffs implemented throughout. What also sticks out to me in this arrangement are the subtle, pulsing synths. Another hit for a crowd in rebellion!

    "F.A.T.E." by Rides In ReVellion

From the first time I heard Rides In ReVellion, I could appreciate their appeal, despite not being able to call myself a fan yet. Well, "F.A.T.E." might finally be the single to tip the scales for me. With a solid power metal-inspired approach, they are writing more solid material than a band like Jupiter, who supposedly embodies this style. With the great vocals and instrumentation in "F.A.T.E.", I'm really looking forward to seeing where RiR goes from here!

    "不機嫌" by chanty
    "Fukigen" by chanty

If there's a band out there doing anything right then it's definitely chanty, no doubt about it (except for their guitarist Shia, but let's hope for the best). The band may not have a massive library of releases in their repertoire but everything they've delivered has been pure artwork. "Fukigen" is an invigorating banger of a song, from it's supercharged start to its burst of an ending. There's not a dull moment with it's hyped frantic pacing and infectious melody. chanty is a band oozing with insane musical goodness that no one should be skipping especially since "Fukigen" is only just a preview for their upcoming new single 今年も春が希望という名の嘘をつく(Kotoshi mo Haru ga Kibou to Iu na no Usowotsuku).

    "Adam" by A9

Stop what you are doing right now and go listen to A9's Ideal. Wait, actually not right now, immediately after you read this paragraph I want you to get your hands on this album and be amazed. Believe me when I say, do not miss this album. Ever since their return, A9 has risen from the ashes and has become a phoenix of musical empowerment. Even though the video is a mostly trippy mess of bad green screen, the song is an example of how much this band has grown since going in their own direction. It takes me back to when I really enjoyed them near the start of their career, when they made much heavier servings with a dash of dulcet spices thrown in. Granted, the entire album has a plethora of fantastic tracks, but "Adam" is the standout definition of their current style. Even though I wasn't a fan of the small, oversynthed dubstep bit thrown in, the rest of "Adam" is a delicacy for the ears.

    "アハレワタ" by DIMLIM
    "Aharewata" by DIMLIM

DIMLIM, the hot new deathcore hunties of the scene, featuring ex-D.I.D. drummer and roadie guitarist + Deviloof's runaway ex-guitarist, come serving you an old D.I.D. style spin on Nokubura's style (or is it the other way around?).  They seem to be turning a lot of heads; the comment section is unusually full of Japanese people either remarking that they bought views (duh) or are the next continuation of v-metal. Foreigners are getting their life too, as noted by the warm reception from you old, bitter people ;). Ultimately, the track is as good as you want it to be: the composition is fairly rigid but a little messy, drum track sounds like arse, the guitarwork is a little flat considering the members' experience and Sho's vox are inconsistent. On the flipside, the chorus gives you all the GazettE-isms you could have ever wanted, Sho's quasi-operatic range is dazzling, the acoustic+solo section is pretty awesome and the last 30 seconds of the track literally shit on anything v-metal released this year. What you chose to ignore and chose to ~love~ is up to you, but at the very least, DIMLIM show potential in their attention to detail, even if the kinks are yet to be smoothed out.

    "pulse" by cinema staff

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - cinema staff have been on fire lately! They're already gearing up for the release of their 6th full album netsugen next month, and they've dropped the PV for "pulse" in anticipation. The song follows in the same the vein as the material on their previously released Vektor E.P., showcasing the band's harder-edged rock sound that they seldom fail to impress with. The video actually serves as the sequel to 2013's "great escape" (the tunnel should be a dead giveaway!), both of which share the same director. If "pulse" is anything to go by, netsugen is going to kick ass.

    "liquid rainbow" by SuiseiNoboAz

These guys went from being one of the coolest up-and-coming indie bands of the 10's only to unceremoniously land themselves in major label mediocrity by their 3rd album. Displeased with the band's shift towards the mainstream, the original bassist  and drummer jumped ship, leaving the trio as a solo act. I thought that they were done for at this point, so you can imagine my shock when they resurfaced with this PV, and as a quartet no less! "liquid rainbow" sees the band return to full form, as they revisit their groovy indie-roots with all of the blatant NUMBER GIRL worship that made us fall in love with them in the first place. Welcome back, SuiseiNoboAz!

    "Sabre Dance" by Tomy Wealth

Chances are you probably haven't heard of drummer/beatmaker Tomy Wealth unless you're some kind of Japanese beat connoisseur. He's not incredibly well-known, but with two albums and a few EPs under his belt, he's still worthy of note. His music combines his very own live drumming with melodic piano samples and orchestral strings for a decidedly cinematic sound that's more organic than my description entails (sometime's it closer to post-rock than straight-up hip hop beats). His new song "Sabre Dance", which will be featured on his next album, is what I imagine fox capture plan would sound like if they only had the conviction and the unassailable coolness of mouse on the keys.

@Ada Suilen's Picks   "Missing" by NoGod It was time that NoGod didn't release something in an official manner, despite their successful work done in these years as metal band. With this new single, they go back to the style which got me to them, in a powerful and energetic metal ballad, featuring virtuous touches and vibrant vocals (reminiscent of great hits like "Atria"), confirming and improving NoGod's status in the visual kei scene and renovating my love for them!

    "ぼくらのアブノーマル" by R指定
"Bokura no abnormal" by R-Shitei R指定

When I listened to this band, in particular to "Seishun wa wrist cut", I had mixed feelings, since I thought that their sound was quite generic for me. But in the latest releases, starting from Suicide Memories, they developed a solid and better sound, which appeals me more. And in the mini-album Nihon Kyoukai Abnormal they tried and experimented with different styles, each one for each song and it brought up to an energetic release, where this song is surely the best one, with aggressive riffs and versatile vocals dominating all over it.

    Translation:

"The rain of despair falling on you"

    The buzzing doesn't stop
    "My head will crack"

If this vision showed me only this
    "Kill me rather"

    For you

    Softly muttered
    Nothing remains here.

    After I cried
The scenery vanished in the dark

How many nights I should go over?
There isn't a place where to return an indelible pain.

The rain of despair has crushed "you"
    Surely...
    I can't save this night

If, singing by myself for a while, I thought of being lost
    The sadness won't disappear

    Swallowed
    In this pain

    Absolutely
I am only looking for it

Even if the rain of despotism has tied down "you"
    Don't erase the gentle memory

The rain of despair has torn "you"
    Even now...
It softly crumbles as it has been struck

    A longing future
    Killed emotions
    I don't need them again

Because I can't see it fading from me
What you can do before your death
    Because I won't be touched.

As there aren't translations of this great song, I decided to do that as my first whole song translation! I tell you that my Japanese is quite basic and I tried to do an understandable translation, so you are free to comment anything about it!
