Tetora reacted to madygrain in Nightmare - Carpe Diem
After spending some time with the album I think I finally got a stable opinion about it. To put things in perspective, it's very easy for me to enjoy most of the the stuff Nightmare puts out to different degrees. I don't think my enthusiasm is so hard that I have to keep my bias in check while I write. I'm trying to be fair, but if you find some of my comments too positive after giving it a try now you know why. Hope that doesn't happen, though.
So, carpe diem. This CD was said to be a celebration for the band's 15th annyversary. As someone that has followed them closely for a long while now I think I can see how they have approached it. Basically it goes something like: take something you used to do until 2009 and spin it a bit with something you have explored since then and/or something new... or just don't. What I mean by this is that what I percieve is that, unlike thir self-titled, SCUMS or To be or not to be, this time around the band seems to stick with what they know best and spice it up. I think their recent albums were either too all over the place (To be and NIGHTMARE) or overdid their theme becomning monotone (SCUMS). Carpe does a much better job at tone and flow from what I can tell.
1.Siva: great mood setter and opener and I think represents the band's mood well. It begins teasing the listener and mantaining the interest with the somber tone and spaced verses but then it delivers with very enjoyable climaxes until it goes full circle. As the following track, it's a very conservative song for the band. But given the nostalgia there is among some of the fans for the phase it references and how well executed it is, I think it can be very appealing. 9/10
2.僕の嫌いな君が死んだら、僕は笑うのだろうか?: this could have come in The World Ruler. Heavier, faster pace song with a more upbeat chorus that breaks with the verses with entering with a higher segment that ends on a lower key. Does well lifting spirits after Siva, but it probably won't be as entretaining. It retains it's virtues and faults and it's very well done so I believe it still can be captivating. But it does not take too many risks. Some vocal touches and the the slowdown after the solo have a bit of what the band did on Majestical Parade, but that's mostly it and it's fine for me. 8/10
3.TABOO: wasn't too excited about this one when it came out as single, but it has grown on me when I listened on the album. I think it contributes to it and fits very well. It's well placed in the album: there is very few energy loss from the previous track even if this is lighter, because of the pace and flow of this song is well carried out. The chorus has a good rythym change and the solo cought my attention pretty well. It is not a stellar song, just a nice one, but does a good job at mixing the more not-bright side of the band with an upbeat, chachy chorus wich has resulted in some weirdly fragmented songs in the past. 7/10
4.恍惚: from all the songs in this album, this is the one that I'm still undecided about. This was composed by Hitsugi and it shows since it retains some of the style, delivery and arrangements his solo project has. And I consider that side project to be very shitty. The thing is that production resources and talent are more aviable on this song than on the ones he does on his own. This sounds much better, of course. But it's still very cheesy for my taste specially the vocal melody on the chorus. Other vocal arrangements are also reminiscent of what Gremblins does, but they don't belong here since Yomi has not reached the vocal ineptitude of Hitsugi just yet. Having him doing some background vocals doesn't help either: some segments on this track sounded like absolute crap to me. On the other had, intrumentalization is pretty decent overall, the flow its not bad, and when Yomi sings the verses with the full band behind and Hitsugi with his mouth closed everything clicks... but lasts too little for me to even consider. Other people I talked to about this album liked it, I can not rule out it can have some appeal but it does not go there for me. Introducing Hitsugi's style is an attempt at refresging the band I appreciate but I think the smart choice would have been waiting until the dude has some actual talent or taste for music or arrangements. It would leave me confused if the song ended in a straight way, but thankfully it has an electronic segment at the end that I liked and that ties this song with Quints in I way I liked. I think it played with expectations well and the flow was handled well, but still it's no saving grace for the song itself. 3.5/10
5.Quints: amazing song and the kind of stuff Nightmare should be doing in the furture. Energetic, well paced, catchy, heavy, easy to consume and like. Having the strings players acts a chorus for Yomi worked great in lives for them, I was surprised It actually never happened on studio, but now it did and still does very well. The big but about this song is that falls on a sin Nightmare fans know too well: repetition. The song is a blast but it loops a bit too much. Having such a good hook I can see me replaying this song a lot. But just because the song itself repeats some segments a bit too much I can end up burned faster than I would like. Other major problem: engrish. Stop making Yomi sing in any languaje that is not japanese. He can't. To the point of making people laugh. Still a blast, though 9/10
6.入滅 -entering nirvana-: thought this was woing to be a slower song just to bring down the pace from Quints... I think this might be my favorite song of the album and has the best hook. A simple, well layered song with great rythym, memorable melody and some theremin-ish sounds that spice it up on the chorus' background to great effect that seals the deal for me. Still retains the mood of the ballads of older Nightmare but the tempo is completely different, everything is very bouncy but still somewhat muted and plays around a lot. I would not think I would find such a relatively creative song on this albun after I listened the first two tracks, but it's here and it fits. I don't think this particular stlyle is something I would like to see more of from this band, as it would devalue this song but I think thet should try to do more stuff with the same challenging aim and execution quality. 10/10
7.blur: how prominent the bass is and tone is helps a lot transitioning into this song, but looking at the rest of the album, how heavy and mostly low key is I'm conflicted about this being here at all. On one had I don't think it fits, even if the placement almost makes me belive so. On the other hand I want it to be because it's a decent song, pop-rock with electronic touches that is relatively new to Nightmare... but it's mostly what everybody else is or was doing. The big deal breaker for me is the guitar solo. It's actually a great solo but it's just too heavy for the rest of the song. In fact I think this solo feels on blur like blur feels on the rest of the album. It's just reversed: the solo is too heavy for blur and blur is too upbeat for this album's overal tone. Is placed among two songs that are on their own terms upbeat and playful and that helps. But when you've been listening for a minute and a half it's impossible not to notice how it detracts from the atmosphere the other songs have been building and will continue to. 7/10
7.Demand: just like nirvana, this is an unapologetic fun song that plays around with somthing that Nightmare have been doing for a lot of time wich is hard rock with very punctuated rythm accents and classical music references. Nightmare has been a band has taken itself very seriously when it comes to their hard stuff -and they still do that here on other tracks- but having this song here that retains the album's heavyness but still has fun with it and challenges it in some way is refreshing. It also helps that the song is very out there and able to surprise with its' changes even when listened several times. It's a very entretaining song and takes advantage of Yomi's decreasing vocal range smartly creating a scenario in wich a more chiba-ish approach can work mixed with his regular low, deep chants. 10/10
8.NAMELESS: with the previous track transitioning well from pop into more heavy stuff no we dive more into it. If 僕の嫌いな君が死んだら、僕は笑うのだろうか? could be a The World Ruler song, is fair to say Nameless could be a SCUMS song. All is here: the heavyness, the more heavily tuned vocals, the electronics on the background, the exotic references. How much did you like SCUMS? that's how much you probably going to like this song. I personally liked the chorus and the overall vibe even with the SCUM flashbacks but It is absolutely not the most interesting song in here. 6/10
9.Fade: I barely have anything to say about this song. It's not good. Vocals are terrible, it's very cheesy overall and Nightmare have done this much better so many times it's rather... pointless. This has to be the song with the most boring harmonics I've heard in while. Is too by-the-book, repetitive... it's a shame the solo is wasted here. 4/10
10.the DOOL: there are some songs tha have less than 43" that are worth listening. I listened to this 43" and I liked them, so I gess there's value here 6/10 maybe? hard to tell, but just like the FOOL, it's a cute short heavy rock segment. I appreciate the nod, I gess.
11.極上脳震煉獄・弐式: on practice: Gianizm 13. Heavy and screamy as as Nightmare can get (wich is not much, specially the latter). There tends to be one of this songs per album and they put a lot on effort into them as I have found most of them to be quite awesome, with lots of stuff going on interestingly harmonized and interesting developments. An awesome headbanger as usual 9/10
12.Tao: really liked this one. Interesing ryhtm and tone changes throughout. Blending the more "regular rock" Nightmare with a one a bit more somber tone creates a dynamic I enjoyed. Vocals are not on par with other stuff on the album and the solo was not very good but it's a tune I keep going back to. The piano and heavy riffs blend very well and then drums get in and it transitions into the chorus wich was introduced as soon as the song started in a less developed, unrevealing way wich is something this band has never done before if I recall correctly. That being said, its not that special and I don't think others would be as into it as I am, therefore 7/10
It has a few holes but I think it is a good effort from Nightmare. If you think Nightmare is or has turned into crap I don't think this album is going to change that -I don't think nothing is going to, given the hyperbole around this band- but I think they tackled a lot of the issues their previous avex albums have been criticised: the flow of the album has been improved by a lot compared to the "random playlist" that some people claimed NIGHTMARE and To be or not to be were. Their range of songs is still prettry good, evading the monochromatic sound SCUMS had while maintainning a mostly cohesive sound and theme. Songs can be a bit conservative early but I think they show the polish of something being done by people that has been on that kind of stuff for 15 years. On the other hand, we see them try a lot of new stuff this time around and do it well -in my opinion. They also have better results at stuff they previously failed at doing. Instrumentals are very good and they seem to be getting around Yomi's fucked up voice, even if sometimes it shows how bad can it get.
I think it's pretty good and shows that the band has not lost perspective or creativity. They have to slow down production and now that they know what tools they can use to make it work, take some time in order to not let potential on the table and put out something even more polished. 7.5/10 would be the most useful score I can give for most people.
    If you want a list...
    1.Anima
    2.Libido
    3.Killer Show
    4.NIGHTMARE
    5.The World Ruler
    6.Ultimate Circus
    7.Carpe Diem
8.To be or not to be
    9.Majestical Parade
    10.SCUMS
I am not sure if I like Majestical Parade less than To be or not to be or that if I like Libido much more than Killer Show. Also, NIGHTMARE should be way lower because it's a mastering disaster, but still I like the songs a lot.

Perhaps call me extremely biased but I feel Nightmare has stayed very relevant for the last several years for me. Every album since the self-titled has just felt like hit after hit. Each has its own experimentations and differences but compared to some other releases, I've been very satisfied with their work. I'm just happy they're still releasing an album each year with all their side projects like Ruka with The Legendary Six Nine, Hitsugi and Gremlins. Heck, even their parody band Sendai Komatsu has been productive in recent years. I mean, for a band that's been around a long time and is touring constantly, I think they're more than exceeding my expectations. They have avoided completely selling out their sound and doing a 180 musically unlike a few long term visual kei bands I could mention. Nightmare has always been a little diverse, as they can efficiently make a jazzy b-side and not completely dispell their 'nightmare' presence, kinda like Mucc has managed to do with all their sounds.

I know this is all just my own opinion but this is why I look forward to anything nightmare comes out with from here.

Also, I love Yomi's vocals, I like that some of the newer songs, he sang in his natural vocal range, without using his 'visual kei' styled vibrato that we hear every other VK band imitate. Call me weird, but I actually like different vocal styles in VK bands.

I know after changing label Vap to Avex, they lost quality, I can count on fingers the songs I really enjoyed after they joined Avex, like Deus ex machina, swallowtail, 404 and etc... maybe they are becoming out of ideas to songs.
About this release, it's a good Full Album, in my opinion better than SCUMS and TO BE OR NOT TO BE. There are good songs like 入滅-entering nirvana-, Quints, Demand and NAMELESS.

Conclusion of Studies on Humanoid Subjects in Dimension 113XR:

Music, like drugs, simulates emotions and feelings, triggers chemical responses, and can often replace the need to actually accomplish things in life, experience things outside of the Humanoid`s own head, and so forth.

Even feelings such as sadness become wired so that the user starts to enjoy them, and latches onto sad songs or certain drugs to re-live those feelings, to feel that sadness, and perhaps bring them closer to something they lost, as that sad feeling is all that they have left.

Eventually the chemicals associated either stop firing, or lose their potency.

Subjects move on to the next song, the next drug, pursuing an endless cycle that is first attached to their current station in life, and then morphs into their very station in life.

Bach, later heralded as a great genius, created a new composition weekly as the people would prefer to not be inconvenienced by hearing the same composition two weeks in a row, despite not being able to play it out on their yet-to-be-invented MP3 players and smartphones.

Humanoids take issue with the disposable nature of current music, and debate issues of quality in the music created by certain artist-bots, yet do not discuss how they helped perpetuate the disposable nature of music, and devalue it with their current electronic ecosystem of downloading as much music as their computers and patience can handle, for free, and decide that they hate an artist or release after listening to the creation a grand total of quite possibly one full rotation, or less. The humanoid then proceeds to either delete the files, or leave them to mingle with countless other files in a forgotten corner of their computer drive.

If it amuses the user, they may partake in spreading ill words about the work and artist for as long as they can continue to receive attention for it. They can often spend more time partaking in this activity than actually listening to the work itself.

The subjects often place listening to music for pleasure higher than consuming drugs, although both often provide similar results, and unfortunately, Humanoids can not be as socially accepted for an act which is more obviously based around instant stimulation, similar to masturbation, and can not as easily argue that they are entitled to free drugs, or download drugs for free and cut profits for the grower or meth-lab industry in half.

The subjects argue that music can spread emotions and ideas in a unique way, yet this is left out of most critical review and analysis, where technical aspects are often favored. This also perplexes older Humanoids who wonder how Bach and The Beatles made way for Dubstep and works that fall into the current Pop Top 40.

Humanoids have also failed to create an agreeable criteria for rating music or its quality, despite having centuries to do so, and often resort to arguments or acts of downright hatred when they continuously re-discover that they are unable to share or sometimes even communicate their feelings and tastes to others without disagreement.

All of these issues and the striking similarities between music and drug-use have led us to come to the conclusion that music should be removed from the dimension that Humanoids inhabit, and that their brains should also be altered in order to remove the sectors that enable what they identify as taste`s and opinions.

I've found that subcultures in music only really exist in small groups nowadays. I used to have a circle in Belgium that existed solely of 80's thrash metal followers, and they looked as if they came straight out of that period in time. As expected, however, it fell apart after a while and more people started dressing casually and the guys cut their hair (the tears I've shed).

You're right about social media playing a role in this, I think. No one has to dress themselves to an extreme anymore to be recognized. Walking down the streets today gives me not even the slightest idea about what people's tastes and interests are, it's really sad seeing the same people all over again. They don't stand out, they don't give off any sort of vibe that separates them from the rest. It's just like everybody wants to follow in a flock of sheep.

Awesome report, Tets! Hopefully one day I'll find time to attend to one of these live events. (Also helpful if they are within driving distance too.) Very happy to see that more NXT stars are jumping on Raw. THE ILLUMINATI started off as a formidable tag-team, but it seems like they are just there to job, although the Lucha Dragons are doing pretty well. Sami looked a little rough on the edges for the premier match and I guess it makes sense now. Popping his shoulder in AND continuing? That's some dedication right there! And while I'm a fan of Adrian Neville, it seems like he has become The Man That Victory Forgot as well. I guess I understand building his character, but at least give him a little bit more victories instead of becoming a complete squash to the established wrestlersentertainers.

Speaking of established entertainers, Chris Jericho is coming back this Summer for a few months it seems. From his Facebook page, the Y2J WWE Tour will run from June 12th to August 30th. Clearly not enough time to start a lasting feud. Maybe that will be enough time for Jericho to put an NXT star over in those months? Maybe Neville or Zayn? After all, that was the only reason why he lost to Fandango in Wrestlemania a few years ago. (Still got to love the light up jacket.)

I believe that Tsuzuku can sing just fine.  And MEJIBRAY being inconsistent is one of the main reasons I love them.  Knowing what to expect each singe is kind of boring, but I guess it works for some bands.  I know I can look forward to each release being different, engaging and exciting.  They don't play it safe and they take risks, and to me they pay off.  When it comes to MEJIBRAY, I usually end up always loving the b-sides more, haha.

I'm no good at reviewing or describing music, but I'll try lol.  Here is my failed attempt:

人間 -  I love how it has this calm beginning, then just stops and Tsu does his thing, his growling (and how ya'll love to put it: dying cat screeches) I think blend well into the song.  The structure of the song is all over the place and it's awesome.

盈虧 - While not one of my favorite tracks, I still love what it brings.  The expert at the beginning doesn't bother me at all, I don't see why it's stupid? Yes the guitar riff is repetitive but at least it's a good one but that solo makes up for it.  I also love how Koichi's bass is more...I don't know technical terms, but instead of his normal slapping lol--it just fits.  The chorus is great, Tsuzuku's desperate whines... I will take any day.

蜈蚣 -  At first I didn't like this so too much.  But then I listened to it again and the 'power'? drumming and Koichi's bass had me sold.  Tsuzuku is a growling master to me.  This track gets me pumped but I can see where it can leave you hanging.

As a diehard MEJIBRAY fan, they can keep my money and I'll proudly put this single on my shelf.

    MONTRÉAL RAW LIVE REPORT!

Just got back from an absolutely awesome night, where I MORE than got my money`s worth!

Rolled in early, me and my crew got the new gear, wanted Ziggler`s stuff too, but they only had small sizes and XXL... Argh! Also, people have Bullet Club shirts (from New Japan Pro Wrestling!), and also some NXt shirts that they wore, like Kevin Owens`.
Got to my seat, place started filling up nicely.

Crowd was hot, chanting Ole, and getting pumped.

SuperStars dark match was Swagger vs. Harper. Both were popular, Swagger a little more, he lost though with a devastating combo.

Then it was Lucha Dragons vs. Los Matadores. Lucha were well over, and people boo`d the Matadores, El Torito was getting a lot of heat, lol, but he was super entertaining.

Then we kick off Raw, Randy is still over like there is no tomorrow, and I can`t help but admire his amazing look, presence, focus, and body language (which has to be some of the best of all time). Just the little things he does, like react to a bad pun by New Day, is so well done.

Roman was half over, and had half-baked heat. Not close to a Cena reaction at all, and people will boo Reigns getting attention, but then cheer him for a nice move, like the Samoan catch, or Suicide Dive.

New Day, people loved to hate, it was genuine heat when they were good guys, but now that they are bad guys people love to chant New Day Sucks, and honestly couldn`t help but crack up at some of their jokes. It works well. Also kids still like New Day, lulz.

Natalya was absolutely beautiful. Words can`t describe, I tell ya.

Ryback got a stupid reaction, IMO, the Goldberg thing makes no sense, but he played off it well, and people quickly changed their tune to chant FEED ME MORE.

People like Wyatt but honestly don`t seem to listen to what he says.

Barrett looks great in person, on t.v. he looks kind of slim, but I was really impressed in person, he has nice mass.

Ambrose was over, he is more over than Roman, and one of the most over guys period, with no haters. Seth also gets lots of cheers mixed in. Crowd loved their match, and both of their personalities are pretty much perfected. Ambrose put on a better match than usual as well, really stepping it up and showing people he has more range.

Bella Twins are over, the whole place really wanted to see them, even if they might not care as much about a match, they want to see them, so they are definitely a draw. When their music hits everyone stands up instantly.

People really like Fandango, and they also REALLY like Lana. Rusev also gets genuine heat.

Nobody really cared that much about Ascension.

Sheamus is also a heel that people like a lot now.
Neville is over, even though some people didn`t know who he was they instantly seemed to start to like him.
Ziggler is well over, and has always been one of the guys who has that `larger than life` feel. Only a few guys have it, IMO, no matter what their size, or what they do, like Bryan, Punk, Jericho, Mysterio, and obviously guys like Cena and Orton. Ambrose and Rollins also have it coming in. I think Roman needs more time, as he seems a little shaken and not 100% sure of himself and his role in the WWE due to crowd reactions. Orton outshines him now, but I think Roman can be great if he finds himself.

Also, lol, people boo`d Cole when he entered, popped big for JBL, and popped even bigger for Booker.

    But as for Cena himself...

Oh man, it doesn`t matter what time they put him on, he is the Main Event. The reaction was EARTH SHATTERING. Just for him, then they throw in a build-up to Sami, have Bret come out, then legit have Sami come out? It was deafening, and people went nuts. Biggest reactions of the night.

I checked the WWE Youtube videos, and as usual, they turn down the crowd noise for moments like this, because you legit would not be able to hear anyone talk in the ring. It`s something else.

Obviously we loved Sami, and I am not sure how much you saw on t.v., but he was LEGIT HURT at the beginning of the match, then they went to commercial. Cena spoke to Sami, and spoke to the refs, etc... He made Sami was okay and could still go. Sami popped his shoulder back in, started hitting it, and stretched it out on the ropes. Cena then tried to favor his other side as to not attack where Sami is weak.

Sucks for Sami, as this was his big moment, as he left the ring, he was fighting back tears, I am sure they were half from the pain, and half from the emotions of making his RAW debut in Montréal and having it go slightly wrong.

Also, quick note, most guys are given tips or instructions by the camera guys and refs, etc... The only guys who actually give instructions or their input to the refs and camera are Cena, Orton and HHH.

Anyway, the main event was nice. I get the feeling people don`t really hate Kane, and don`t even want to legit boo him. Ambrose walked out on top as you know, and the crowd loved it.

But after the show... Oh man...

We had Pat Patterson appreciation night, they played back all the videos and more, with everyone saying how much he did for them, how great he was at coming up with ideas...

And I had no idea, but VINCE came out, and everyone popped hard and sang his theme. It was amazing to see him.

Then Bret came out again and talked about Pat`s amazing legacy.

They gave him a Montréal Canadiens jersey with `Patterson` on it, and the number 1.

Pat was fighting back the tears the whole time.

    Then... man oh man...

    Motorhead hit...

HHH came out, I couldn`t believe it, I wanted to see him SO BAD!

It was amazing, and everyone popped hard. We all started chanting HHH, but Trips gave us a look like: Wait a minute, this night`s not about me, lol`. And he turned the attention to Pat again quickly.

Trips told some old Pat Patterson stories, and then presented him with a beautiful framed display of a custom White Intercontinental Belt, which looked absolutely awesome, one of the nicest I ever saw. And some pictures of important moments in Pat`s history. It was awesome.

All the wrestlers were on the stage, btw, and cheering him. Pat sang `My Way` and then the show was over. Cena and Trips spoke to Pat as they walked out.

And btw, Fandango and Roman stood close on stage, and chatted as they walked out, so I think they might be good friends. Just something I noticed.

I think that`s all I had to say, nothing too exclusive, just my observations and maybe some things you missed on t.v. My lungs are sore, my voice is gone, my hands are still red from clapping, and I had so much fun.
If you have any questions just post them or P.M. and I will most likely add the answers to the end of this post.
