Now we’re at the crux of the issue. Not only are you musically ignorant, you also don’t like the direction the band has gone (*cough* metal *cough*).

Which is fine, you don’t have to like the direction Dir en grey has gone musically; but when you make arguments out of ignorance to inflate the importance of your half-baked opinion, it warrants correction.

Just keep that in mind. Also, please keep your silly American politics out of this thread, thanks.

Who said Dir en grey's musical style being predominantly metal was "carved in stone"? I get the point you're trying to make; but let's stop pretending Dir en grey are not a 'metal' band when over 80% of their catalog is classified as 'metal'.

Ah yes, the "true metal" argument. This is one of those arguments people slap around when they evidently know very little of the style of music being discussed (see: your comments on "Djent"). It's an abstract non-argument where you're not actually saying anything despite the fact you're stringing sentences together. Please, define for us "true metal" and how that is distinguished from a band like Dir en grey who are apparently not "true metal".

I don't recall ever specifically defining Dir en grey as "progressive metal", whom are you quoting?

No offense; but it's difficult to discuss music with people who are unable to distinguish between guitars chugging in C# (Gaika) and an A minor/diminished half-step riff (you, know, a staple within the 'extreme metal' style) built on two guitar harmonies outlining a i-v (A, E) chord progression and a tri-tone. Not only are they different harmonically, they're entirely different in how they're introduced in the song.

Saying Dir en grey "aped" the outro to Gaika demonstrates clear ignorance of music and musical form.

Actually Gaika is one of the most beautiful songs from Uroboros remastered.

If you think the outros to gaika and Inferno sound anything alike, I suggest you get your ears checked because you might be tone deaf.

And yes, Dir en grey is a metal band. I don’t see how that is remotely in dispute. Perhaps that’s tied to being tone deaf?

Though this IS coming from the same person who didn’t know “Djent” started with Meshuggah, sooo.....

or a fucking single or SOMETHING. Throw us a bone so we have something to discuss. And no, those remakes don't count because they were almost straight re-recordings done on the cheap and the videos blew big hairy ones.

Overall I like Uruha's songs the best: 千鶴, DIM SCENE, TO DAZZLING DARKNESS, and CODA were all amazing in my opinion.

DEG isn’t doing anything out of the ordinary though. The dynamic shift from quiet to loud/gentle to heavy is a common practice in music in general. Stuff like Unknown.Despair.Lost just reminds me of old school Metallica, where they would have acoustic intros that led into full on thrash songs. Quiet verse/loud chorus was especially popular in the 90s grunge era.

I guess there’s also the factor of VK/jrock bands typically not giving two shits about sticking to one style or genre. One only needs to listen to practically any MUCC album for proof of this.

Uncensored PV leaked on jps, and yeah that ^ is pretty much what happens during the mosaic parts. The boyfriend coughs up blood, goes down, the mother and daughter are just like, "welp okay then," mother chops up body, rips out guts/entrails and throws them in a bucket, daughter puts entrails in a blender, mixes it all up, and pours the mix into water bottles, yeah, fucked up shit right here

That's a good one. Although I personally love VINUSHKA, it is maybe a bit long for a new listener.

OBSCURE would also be a good one, but the video might turn off some.

I just stick around to see if Shinya’s drumming is going to get any worse. He’s going to be the Japanese Lars Ulrich in another ten years.

There is some truth to this. I roll my eyes and laugh pretty hard when I hear Americans shouting “ANKORE!!!”

Another favorite: when Kyo went thru that phase where he changed lyrics in The Final. In Japanese lives you would see fans holding up one finger and then two during the “hitotsu futatsu” line. Well he changed that part, and a small group of people anticipated the old lyrics and held their fingers up, but Kyo left them hanging.

But that's my favorite thing about their shows. I always go in thinking I'm going to hate it but it's somehow made so much better by the fact that I feel hilariously out of place, yet we're all watching the same five Japanese men slowly trudge through their midlife crises on stage. It's strangely cathartic.

I suppose every fandom has its share of blindly devoted soldiers, but the ones with the complete lack of objectivity amaze me.

In fact, I think I just answered my own question about whether or not these people actually listen to the music. I remember when Lotus came out there were people saying how nice it was to hear Kyo sing and the addition of piano was nice new touch to DEG’s style. I’m like, you dumb motherfuckers, Glass Skin wasn’t that long ago!

Lol that’s literally what I said.

But my understanding is that they didn’t put ain’t afraid to die on Macabre because they thought it didn’t fit thematically. Like, somehow Taiyou no Ao does with that shitty sipping-margaritas-by-the-cabana breakdown in the middle.

    Fuck that song.

How they figured Audrey fit Macabre but ain’t afraid to die didn’t is even more baffling. Only reason I can imagine ain’t afraid to die didn’t fit was because there were already three long ballads on there (not to mention Macabre’s 11 minute long ass).

Know what? Fuck it! Ain’t afraid to die should have taken Taiyou no Ao’s place!

So were the most dedicated Dir translators capable to decipher the meaning of new Karma and Kiri to Mayu if their original versions had more straightforward, explicit lyrics?

THE IIID EMPIRE and Beautiful Dirt were quite useless to rerecord, since they only expose more flaws in a way how Diru delivers their older songs nowadays. God forbid Kyo would consider adding flat falsettos when they are not needed!

Fukai on the other hand was kind of necessary due to fans requesting the studio take of CoV version for years, but the original is still there and it flows better if anything.

How impressive of them to include superior single versions of their A-sides instead though.
I wish I could see the actual voting results conducted by Firewall div. to see which B-sides were favored the most.
