Really glad to see this review man! They're a band that I don't see mentioned too much, so its good to see them getting a bit of acknowledgement. Personally, they've been hit or miss with me, but their "hits" always have a permanent spot in my rotation. I feel like their previous albums didn't really have a fully formed sound...like the band kinda knew what direction they wanted to go, but were still experimenting and trying to figure things out. Now on "OUT OF THE BLUE", I feel like the band has found a sound that they can be consistently effective at. I think they still have a slightly experimental/off-kilter edge to them, but it's more subdued and tasteful this time around. Their best work yet for me.
  2. That's perfectly fine that VK no longer sustains your interests - just be wary of allowing your shift in opinion to digress into some kind of hypocritically jaded hatred for the scene and it's fans. I say this because all too often people who experience these kinds of evolutionary moments in their musical journeys feel the need to criticize, belittle and demean their past phases in an attempt to validate their current interests. One needn't do that, because when it comes to music, your tastes are substantial regardless of what you listen to and regardless of what anyone else thinks. Although I definitely understand the need to have your tastes validated...it's something that feeds the ego (which i think we're all hardwired to do). But once you realize how purely ego-driven it all is, then I think you'll realize how fruitless of an endeavor seeking such validation can be and that music taste (in this case your shift in music taste) isn't that big of a deal. But hey, none of us are supreme enlightened beings (except for Bear - he's pretty perfect ^__~) and we're all guilty of seeking validation and just wanting to reaffirm ourselves in many ways. So to answer your question again - is it a bad thing that you've lost interest in VK? Absolutely not! Listen to whatever appeals to you - just remember that everything appeals to someone, so even if you've lost interest in it, at least try to maintain some level of respect for the scene and it's fans. ;3

You can't really get much cooler than that. ;3
  4. Interesting indeed! I love how ichiko can go from working with high profile ppl like Ryuichi Sakamoto, Yoko Kano, and Cornelius to collaborating with undeground dudes like mahito.
  5. I hope it's good...this band is always hit or miss with me >__>
  6. Bad news: I need a new laptop fan ASAP (CPU & mobo hoovering around 60C with just firefox open). Good news: I successfully disassembled and reassembled my laptop (more than once). HP and their crappy design make it so that you have to take apart the entire thing just to access the fan. But at least this isn't as daunting a task now and I don't have to pay out my ass for someone else to do it >_>

Can you try resetting the heat sink? I don't know how things work in the laptop world, but I would guess that if you went out and bought like an 8 dollar thing of thermal paste there is a chance you might be able to remedy the situation.

  14. I was just cursing best-of albums they other day, now this pops up almost as if to spite me. *sigh* =__= Well, on the bright side, I'm at least looking forward to the new "mixes" of their old stuff. Re-recordings would be better, though, but we'll see!

Newfound enjoyment aside, I STILL can't get over "INSIDE BEAST" sounding like a remix of this:

I have to agree mostly. It's been over a year since I listened to this album it's it's entirety and I have to say that I'm so much more impressed with it this time around. Listening to an album fresh, long after all the hype has died down definitely helps to get a clearer picture...especially because you're listening to ACTUALLY listen...not just so you can have an opinion to throw in the pot while the stove is still hot, ya know? Definitely better than TOXIC and DIVISION, and I can also hear how they drew inspiration from both NIL and SR. Some of the tracks weren't necessarily impressive, but they weren't "bad" either. The tracks that DID standout I plan on incorporating into my normal rotation, though. This isn't a proper review, but if I were to give it a score, it would be a 7/10. Well done, cohesive album with a few really great moments. I'm glad that sweetholm got me to revisit this!

m-koda, Kashiwa Daisuke, agraph, Fugenn & The White Elephants, Daisuke Tanabe, lycoriscoris, Himuro (himuro yoshiteru), moskitoo, cuushe, piana, serph/Reliq, go-qualia, AOKI Takamasa, Fourcolor/filfla/fonica, fragment, riow arai, rei harakami man...there's a lot more of this stuff in Japan, but those are some of the big ones for me. Also, anything on the "PROGRESSIVE FOrM" label is worth checking out!
  22. the chorus of this song gives me chills *__________________________________________* (starts @ 0:48)
  23. I usually try to check out this band's material, as they have enough songs that I enjoy. One thing I like about the vocalist is that he actually sings in Japanese pretty often...i know a good amount of bands in this scene sing in a similar manner, but it's usually in Engrrrish. (which i'm really picky about XD)
  24. Never heard of this band, but some of the samples sound nice.
