  1. Me on birthday: I'm 30 now, I'll act like an adult from now on. Me today: I lost the ticket lottery for the extra MUCC tour dates. I will cry on the train if I want to!!!

Overall impression - they were a lot more impressive than I expected. Probably has to do with the extra self confidence/ego boost they got from touring in the past couple months. I think they're trying to go for that glam sound - if I had to guess what LiME's vocal inspiration was this time, I'd go for 80's metal? He doesn't sound 100% polished, but that's fine - I'm guessing he's trying to find a style that goes better with this band's image. So there was some screaming he did where it felt 'OK I totally see what you're trying to do here, I wanna hear it again in a year because it's gonna be fucking awesome!' I wish I could remember more, but nothing really stood out to me other than the vocals. Maybe it would've been different if I could actually listen to any of their tracks other than Oshimai before seeing them live, but life's tough so I'll just keep keeping an eye on them.

Holy hell, I just saw them live and the hype is nonsensically high. It was funny because they came on right after Xaa Xaa and the resemblance (in aesthetics mostly) was almost confusing. People went craycray for them, a large portion of the crowd even called it a night after their performance and didn't bother staying for the last band on the bill (I thought Razor would be a lot more popular than that, considering the lineup?).
  4. gonna see grimoire, xaa xaa, zonbi and kizu today. never heard about the other bands on the bill but they seem fun (razor and ensoku? let's see what i've been missing out on!)

Grimoire, Xaa Xaa and Kizu totally killed it. Zombie and Ensoku were fun too. I've seen Zombie perform a more energetic set about 8 months ago but it was still great seeing them again. Razor were probably amazing too, but they came on last and I was too tired to notice anything except how shiny Ryoga's pants were + Kouryu's Black Swan realness.

This is the main message of the film imo, to sell them as the biggest thing in Japanese rock heading towards world domination. I think that in this aspect, X are trying to have their cake and eat it. They invented visual-kei - that's all you need to know, the pioneered a movement of sorts that sounds cool and groundbreaking, which paints them as heroes. But giving more screen time to the scene would expose them for what they are - in the end, X Japan and visual kei will always be a niche. They can fill Tokyo Dome 10 times and appear on Kohaku on New Year's Eve, but they're by no means Japan's darlings/national treasure/symbol/whatever the hell it is Yoshiki wants to portray them as, and their music might be great but it's irrelevant to what happens in the charts these days, or even to what's happening in visual kei these days. They're legends to visual kei fans but telling America/the rest of the world how legendary they are/were out of this context is dishonest at best, and I think this is one of the things that bothered me the most about this film, even though I enjoyed most of it as a fan of the band.
  7. One of the artists on this lineup is not like the others!

I mean, I get memorials / tribute events, but the way this is presented is all sorts of grotesque.

Holy shit this lineup is a mess..

Let's see, we have a guy whose name is one letter, Pretty standard. A band that's pretty debated over whether their Vkei, but they did do a song with Ningen Isu... who is also debated over being Vkei or not,

A bunch of prisoners escaped from jail, some dudes I have no idea who tf they are,

Some hardcore looking dudes in hats, an anime character,

Some other band, a relatively normal Vkei band for once,

An idol group who have no idea who hide are and were probably forced by their manager to do this,

an unpronouncable name, Hitsugi, a bunch of old dudes trying to be young

Some dude named Kiyoshi who I'm convinced is Kiyoharu's long lost twin.

Ehh bunch of no names, Daizy Stripper, some other group I have no idea who tf they are,

Exist trace, some dude in a Kimono, a weeb, and another idol group.

  8. Not sure if bored or intrigued

  9. You know you're officially fucked when you begin thinking 'well if I don't use the air conditioner this summer I'll be able to afford at least two more lives'

  10. I think it depends. Some people sing so loudly during concerts it actually ruins it for everyone around them. From what I understand, it's considered rude to sing during vkei concerts, unless the artists gives the crowd cue to sing. Not sure about other concerts though. I still sometimes catch myself lip-syncing for my life because in my country singing along at concerts is encouraged, so I have fun without getting nasty glares from people around me.
  11. qotka

Golden Bomber's Dakishimete Schwarz. Slay that shit every single time.
  12. So tonight's MUCC live felt for the first time like a real rock concert. Idk how to explain it? It was in a tiny club, they were cosplaying themselves from 18 years ago but it didn't have that... v-kei pretentiousness? Which I usually dig, don't get me wrong. But this was a lot more like a 'western' rock concert at a local shitty run-down club, where the toilets are full of posters to hide the peeling walls. I never thought I would get to see them like that, and even when I got the ticket I still didn't think it would feel authentic. But it did.

Setlist from Twitter this time because I'm busy healing my soul and my shoulders (my punishment for being that tall gaijin standing up front is obviously to lift all the short girls when they wanna crowdsurf):

Speaking of - I love how MUCC bangya are 50% grannies 50% girls who weren't even born when they started. And the crowd surfing is so legit it hurts.

@WhirlingBlackwhat dates are you going? Also 15,000 for a ticket???

    2. WhirlingBlack

      WhirlingBlack

The general sale tickets (I don't live in Japan so had to rely on those) sold out in 1 second and thus I had to go to scalpers and they charge a premium to say the least.

I'm going to the two dates in Osaka and one in Kobe. It's what I could afford and have time for puzzling around my 10 date Dir en grey tour, haha.

    3. qotka

      qotka

Yeah there were like 20 tickets for each venue on the general sale from what I heard. No wonder I could basically recognise 90% of the faces yesterday - same FC gya every single time.

Whoa sounds like your time here is gonna be intense, have fun! :D

I totally get this. Sometimes I notice a song for the first time that way - I may have heard it about a hundred times when listening to the album but disregarded it because of the songs it was surrounded with. If that makes sense. lol
  14. qotka

Spoiler: Hiro from te' stole the show.
  15. qotka

OK 0.1g no gosan definitely caught my attention. Bonus: their bangya look hardcore and I'm loving it. Will follow.
  16. qotka

i'm excited to see what the tai-band tour will be like, which bands from their tribute will participate etc. the budokan finale sounds epic.
  17. I may have spent 3 hours today crying at the Budokan because MUCC decided to play their selection of MEGA EMO SHIT (from stuff they released from 1997 to 2006 + some stuff from the new album). I mean I was trying to write something cynical but they started the show with Kuchiki no Tou and ended it with Zuta Zuta so it was like a very delicious emo sandwich. I'll never refuse a good emo-sandwich.

I was with my husband at A2. Not German though, but maybe it was us? He lifted one of the crowd-surfing girls on his shoulders at some point. It was so much fun, but it could've been a lot crazier - something just didn't feel right with the energy there. Maybe they should've let more people into the standing block, because it felt like there were only 4-5 very active rows and the people behind us were just... hanging there. XD

I think the thing they did with Myakuhaku as closing/ending is all about the polarity of the two shows - life, death, everything is connected blahblah (<-- reads too much into poetic vkei stunts lol). But I get where you're coming from.

media no juusei is epic, but i think some of the magic is lost in a big venue. when they did it at club citta last month i gained about 10 years of life. plus Tatsurou's theatricality throughout the song adds a lot to it - the crazy man talking with himself and the scary faces. Speaking of - do you remember which song it was yesterday when Tatsurou was alone on stage and just did a scary face with creepy lighting etc. (i was mesmerized XD but for some reason my memory is very foggy on this one).

And holy shit yes! At this point I'm about to go from 'shut up and take my money' to 'take my credit card and do what you need to do'. :(  But seriously speaking, I hope this year doesn't burn them out. All these releases (even if they're remasters/re-recordings/compilations) and 4 tours? They better take a break after this.

    3. TrentReznor

      TrentReznor

It must be you guys then, maybe French? I remember the guy tried to help/push when one girl just suddenly faint there, was it him?

From the first floor today the ground looked much more crazy (like everyone active) though with less "crowd surfers"

I dont remember that exact moment from Tatsurou, maybe it was in the "minibreak" they did when only him and Sato reminded in the stage for a few seconds?

Taking into account they sales are not as good as it used to be...is a bit risky all this releases...3 compilation albums in 1 year, + 2 remasters (at least), +1 tribute album, the LP reedition, + at least 1 live dvd (I guess it be a box set, like the "live chronicles" series) and 1 MV dvd, pfff sounds way too much, and there is still one "egg" to be discovered, hope they take some rest after it.

But this Friday I go back to Beijing (I was in Tokyo for just 10 days) so the anniversary lives part is done for me:(

    4. qotka

      qotka

      possibly us then! :)

2nd day had less crowd-surfing songs and more... general headbanging/moshing ones? to be honest, although i like the 1st day setlist more, the 2nd day felt a lot more like i thought Budokan would feel like.

yeah, i'm not sure where they're going with all these releases. plus rumors about oishi masahiro screwing l'arc over makes me wonder where all the money they will make off these releases is going anyway. and yes, they should rest. the bangya will live without seeing them for a couple months lmao

glad you got to go to both days! hope you have more cool opportunities like this soon. :)

  18. i think this hits the nail on the head of this problem. when you're looking to curate something (and i believe this is a large part of an organizer's job), you need to know your shit and actually care about the acts you're bringing. taking a quick look at the VK acts b7klan are working with, my first thought is 'i don't believe you for a second that you actually believe these bands have potential in europe'.
  19. qotka

i wish the name choice was the most tragic part about this one.
  20. X Japan went through the trouble of changing their tour name to include the word ACOUSTIC in it, but it's still called WORLD TOUR and all six dates are in Osaka and Yokohama? OK THEN. lol

  21. qotka

DEZERT should definitely cover one of their early 2000's tracks. But seriously I love DEZERT's dramatic presentation and although they seemingly draw a lot from MUCC they could probably do an interesting interpretation to Zetsubou (or Bouzenjitsu, that would also be cool!). Also Polysics doing Fuzz sounds exciting although I would also love for them to cover something from Karma.
  22. qotka

OK so this one didn't happen at a live and I'm risking exposing myself for the 14-year-old fangirl trapped in an old hag's body that I am (as if I haven't already lol), but here goes. Went to Tower Records Cafe in Shibuya. It was MUCC Day, the band was doing a live broadcast on nico and the cafe had a special MUCC-themed menu. My friend and I just wanted to hang out and suspected nothing even when the waitress asked us if we're cool with being photographed/recorded. Fast forward to this scene:
  23. qotka

DEZERT, lynch., Plastic Tree etc, and even cali=gari are somewhat predictable (even though I'm super excited), but omg Polysics?? I can't wait for this.
  24. today i broke a personal record of self-embarrassment and was THAT gaijin on a live niconico broadcast.
