How far would you go in hating/disliking a band because of its fans?

I don't like anime, I don't even know what Fullmetal Alchemist is??? I also don't know that song. When someone starts talking about anime to me, I wish they would just shut up and I'm not pretending... I just prefer real actors. The only thing I like looking at, is yaoi porn on tumblr ;p. Not all visual kei fans like anime, really. Some people like only visual kei and they don't pretend anything, it's personal preference. If I had to pick a drawing style from Japan, I'd rather pick eroguro (Suehiro Maruo and arts like this).

I can't say much about visual kei fans cause I'm not as into the online community as I used to be a few years back but I am very active in a pop music forum and I have noticed that some people are so involved and obsessed that they feel the need to bring other fan bases down. I don't see why they need to but apparently they're insecure. I just try and take their comments and anger with a grain of salt and not let it influence my opinion of the artist. Let their music and actions decide how I feel about them.

I try to ignore the (stupid) fans. If i like a band its because of their music not their fans. Some fans are stupid the way they go on but it has always been that way no matter what band or style.

I think the main problem here is the expectation that you'll somehow get along better with fans of the same music than with any other random group of people.

It's normal to have it because the more you have in common the likelier it is to become friends. However. I learned that you really don't need much in common to like the same genre of music, especially because there can be very different reasons in people to like something.

 

And those reasons often cause more problems than not having anything at all in common would. For example. Someone who loves a band for the records, collects all of it and sees a deep meaning in the lyrics might not respect a fan who loves the band for their live shows and sees fandom mainly as a reason to party.

He would propably completely ignore someone with that mindset if they were into something else, but since it's about the same thing he likes it will propably feel like an insult to him because his hope to find someone with a similar mindset was crushed.

 

If you try not to expect fans of them same music to be somehow similar to yourself it will get much easier and you'll value the occasional soulmate you'll find in the fandom much, much more.

 

So no. I don't care for the other fans at all. I even went to shows of bands regularily where I felt that everyone was an idiot and still had fun.

I personally don't really like most MEJIBRAY fans I've encountered on tumblr (and last.fm), mainly because they tend to be more focused on Tsuzuku's looks than the band's music (I mean, be honest: whenever a new MEJIBRAY thread surfaces about a new release there is at least 2 pages of posts about the new look), but the reason I do not like the band is not because they're "a band designed for fangirls" as someone once called it, but that I just genuinely don't enjoy the music. If I had, none of this would've probably mattered to me. You do not need to interact with a band's fanbase to enjoy them, like I said before.

 

So what are your opinions?

and now they are one of my favorite bands (simply because of their amazing sound, it's catchy, harsh, unique). and Now I like their looks too!

First and foremost, I am a musician and I tend to 'analyse' or build up an idea if i like the band based on what they play and how they play it. how well songs are written, how well the instruments fit into their allocated slots, how well the vocals pair with the music and how well the instruments gel together. Layering, dynamics. general melody. 

 

Lyrics add to the song but most of my time my mind blanks out lyrics unless they are good or singing about something I can really relate to, so while good lyrics is important and do add a lot to a song, it comes secondary to musicianship and song construction.

 

I was recently recommended a band called 'Rampant' and they were recommended to me because I like metalcore and I listen to quite a few female fronted bands. Long story short, I didnt think much of the band at all, Vocals lacked dynamics, guitar riffs and drums were rather basic/generic if not badly mixed and it just seems like the kind of emo/screamo metal garage band you start up in your teens. There was nothing special about the band at all. even the lead singers screams were passable but somewhat cringeworthy to listen to. I could hear some early existTrace influences in some of their songs though and I fucking loved early existTrace before they went all hipster and turned into an alt-rock band (flame me if you must) 

 

Many people still like Rampant though and good for them. despite what I think of them, theyre still a solid band and they still have time to grow but they've been active since 2008 (though they were formed in 2005)

I can't talk about The GazettE with people unless they play instruments or have an understanding of things because either they like them for their looks, or dislike them. I dislike the genre they're in, but One Directions fans are complete assholes to people who don't like them. So even if I was into that genre, being associated with people like them is something that I don't want to be associated with.

 

However, it also doesn't influence me at the same time because the fans aren't the ones keeping me there completely and they're not the ones making the music, it's up to the musicians to create something that will instill some emotions inside me and will make me want to come back and listen to their stuff for whatever reason that is. Also, the only time I ever interact with fans is either at school or at concerts (musical conversation hasn't come up at work...yet) and at school I can just ignore them if they're jerks and all the concerts I've been to are metal concerts so I just push the person into a mosh pit and be rid of them xD

I used to have a few friends that i go to gigs with, we all more or less liked the same music and we'd get together for a jam when we could. sadly the ones im most chummy with moved away or left to go study overseas. I still have the other guys but they dont really go to gigs or play any instruments and i cry evry time.

 

Otherwise, I dont really discuss personal stuff at work, and nobody has ever asked so i just focus on the job, finish up then go home. Its not the kind of job where you all go out for drinks afterwards sadly.

There was probably a point where I couldn't differentiate, probably when I actually cared about fandom. But now I don't, so I couldn't care less what fans are like, in many cases I don't even know because I don't interact with them at all. However, it was less about hating on a band I already liked because of stupid fans, but more I would avoid bands with annoying fans.

I wouldn't do something like that. There are quite a few bands I enjoy that I wouldn't if I paid attention to their respective fanbases and let that kind of thing influence my appreciation of the music. Letting fans influence what you listen to is something I view as beyond immature.

Fans and how they influence how i feel about a certain band or group has no correlation to me now. If anything i feel as if the rabidness of VK fans has gone down intensely from what it was a few years ago. Anyone who's been active in the scene knows how much of a shit show Batsu was. Batsu was the home of dickhead, stuck up DIR EN GREY fans and overly obsessed GazettE fans as well as others. It was either, who could one up who or who adored who more. BARELY about the music. It was extremely sickening but at the same time, I could easily avoid it all by just sticking to the music and not going to that particular place...or just come here when you guys were TW.  

 

I feel like now people have matured, its gotten to the point where people can actually discuss a release from a musical perspective/a calm manner for the most part. If anything, K-Pop (even though I love it), is the only genre where fans are consistently getting out of hand. Its 2014. Stanning and such is looked down upon. Its also not that hard to be an adult and have your own experience with a band. People could be listening to so much great music but are robbing themselves of it because of "the stans." And its also ok to have a differing opinion than everyone else especially if you feel strong about it.

Literally how I'd put it. Fans should never determine whether or not you should listen to a band. Sure, some fanbases can be a bit too manic or rude, but that's the case with everything including music. But it's not like that everywhere, and it can always be avoided. If you feel you can't enjoy a certain artist because of fans, I think you're listening to music wrongly.

I've disliked quite a few artists and bands as they were favourites of people who treated me terribly — abused my trust every day, stole from me, threatened me, etc. Those were mainly Satsuki and lynch., however this is no longer the same as I've completely dismissed those people from my life and I happily listen to these artists.

If I already like the band and then find out the fandom is crap, oh well. It's disappointing, but I just end up enjoying it and not really interacting with other fans much. Between bad fandoms and liking some unpopular stuff, I have plenty of bands I like that I don't really talk about with anyone. It's not really an issue for me. However, if I do really get along with other fans of the band or a lot of my friends end up liking the band, I'll probably get more into them just because I do get to talk about it and it's fun. 

 

Unfortunately, bad fandoms can put me off to a band I haven't listened to yet. I know it's not fair, but I don't really feel that I give a band a fair listen when I'm already sick of hearing ABOUT them before I actually hear any of their music.

i judge artists based on their fan bases, but im not gonna write them off. sometimes they make no sense or dont align at all, but fans send a message about the bands music whether or not people like to accept it. moran & dir en grey attract too much crazy for all they're worth, meanwhile im not surprised arlequin and meji fans get arrested for ticket drama and gazette fans are elitist crazies. meanwhile, on the flipside, bands with a quiet fan base who are serious about the music and aren't trolling on tanuki 24/7 reflect a certain image as well. this occasionally corresponds with reality, i guess no one can know for sure but i definitely sense it. don't get me started on pop stans i dont play with the devil.
