I know they're parodies, so they don't really count, but these PLC commercials always crack me up.
  2. A lot of these can be improved over time and I'm oblivious enough to put up with a lot, but neediness/jealousy and overly emotional behavior/a bad temper are huge dealbreakers for me. I absolutely cannot deal with someone who shouts at me over nothing, or that needs to know where I am and what I'm doing at all times. Excessive drinking, lying and messiness are the other major ones coming to mind. Things looking a little junky or dusty is fine, but when a person is leaving food out all day, covering the kitchen in spills and splatters and not cleaning it up, leaving sharp objects on the floor, etc., that's definitely not something I'm willing to look past.
  3. Here's another interview I translated a while ago. You can see how shoddy my Japanese is with this one because there are a few lines I just didn't get. I decided to highlight them in red rather than guess. ^ETA: hiroki kindly helped me out with the lines I was missing, so I've filled in those parts in highlighted in red. Thank you! <3 Original article: http://2youmag.com/2youmag_old/interview/2014/no41/pot.html -- A melodic punk band with Japanese lyrics coming out of Osaka, POT will release their first full album “ARCO IRIS” on TRUST RECORDS. TRUST RECORDS has signed a number of Nagoya bands such as BACK LIFT, THREE LIGHTS DOWN KINGS, ENTH, EVERLONG and more, but they are the only band from Osaka. This new release could be considered a compilation of five years of work, and it has twelve songs that show off the band’s distinctive triple vocal approach and plenty of variety. Disproving the idea that “TRUST = Nagoya”, POT have come from the west to take over the scene! Q: How was POT formed? Yoppy: Originally, me and Oda were in a band together, and Makoto and Yoshikun were in a different band. Then when both of our bands broke up the manager of the venue Kyobashi ism said “Guys, wouldn’t it be great if you started playing together?”. We weren’t really interested at first, though. Makoto: We knew of each other since both of our bands played at ism, but we weren’t really friends. I casually thought "I'll offer support for them", but when we entered the studio we decided to do a live. That's how we formed the band. Yoppy: At the time, I was starting another band, so I thought it would just be Oda going off to work with them, but in the end that band fizzled out as well and we ended up doing it together. Q: So you weren’t enthusiastically going “Let’s start a band!” when you got together… Makoto: It does sort of seem like we were forced into it. (laughs) Oda: That’s why we didn’t really talk about what kind of band we wanted to become either. Yoppy: It was only when Yoshikun said that he wanted to be the vocalist that we said “Doesn’t that seem a little off?” (laughs) But we never really discussed musicianship, we just jumped right into making original songs. Well, I guess that’s because the music we were listening to was similar. Q: What kind of bands make up your musical roots? Yoppy: MONGOL800. I think we all like them. Makoto: The band that got me interested in making music was 175R. I listened to “Happy Life” a lot. I think before that it was probably Yuzu? Yoshikun: Yeah, that’s right. I was listening to Yuzu and 19 (ジューク). Oda: Yeah, it was 19 (ジューク) for me too. Q: I see. So the reason POT has three vocalists is just because you all wanted to sing, then. (laughs) Yoppy: That’s right. (laughs) Since in our former band Oda and I used to do twin vocals and Yoshikun used to sing in his band as well, when we started POT we didn’t really think about who would be the main vocalist and it just spontaneously ended up with all of us singing. So we weren’t really aiming at having a triple vocal band, it just became this way naturally. Q: What kind of band is POT, in your eyes? Makoto: I think it’s a free band. Yoppy: A band where we’re free to do what we like to do…saying something like that is boring, isn’t it? (laughs) You see that kind of answer a lot in interviews. (laughs) Maybe I should change my answer. (they all laugh) Oda: Some older musicians have told us that we’re an “omnibus-like” band. Yoppy: I was really happy to hear that. The musical style of "POT" is entirely different, and with 3 people singing during the same song there isn't any sense of "unity"*. Since one of our senpai told us that we’re an omnibus-like band I’ve become especially conscious of that. (*Meaning that there is a varied sound they can only achieve with three vocalists. I think what he's getting at is that because they switch between vocalists and combine their voices in different ways over the course of each track their songs don't get monotonous.) Q: It’s kind of like the way The Beatles worked, then. You bring together songs from each member and you each sing them. Yoppy: That’s it. The Beatles, that’s us. (laughs) Q: We know that your first full album “ARCO IRIS” will be released by TRUST RECORDS, but how did you end up with them? Makoto: We played a lot of shows with bands like BACK LIFT, MISTY, ENTH and EVERLONG. But we’d never really talked to the owner Watatani-san much. Yoppy: We just sort of said amongst ourselves that we wanted to join TRUST, and it was just like we were suddenly pushed in. (laughs) Q: So you asked them directly? Yoppy: Yeah, we totally did. But us selfishly, or should I say stubbornly, going “Please let us join your label” and them deciding by going “Well, I guess you can” looks pretty bad. In the end, I wanted it to be the reverse with them asking us (laughs). Makoto: We had meetings for about a half a year. (laughs) Yoppy: Yeah, and in the end TRUST said “Do you want release something with us?” Q: So in the end they asked you (laughs). Yoppy: Yeah, and we were like “Well, since you asked, we’ll take you up on it.” (they all laugh) Makoto: And yet, we were so happy. (laughs) Q: From your view outside of Nagoya, what kind of label is TRUST RECORDS? Yoppy: It really does have a completely Nagoya image, doesn’t it. I would almost say that it’s like their Nagoya colours are so strong that it’s like “Aren’t all Nagoya bands on TRUST?”. That’s why I thought it would be interesting to have a band from Osaka on the label. Q: This album really seems like a compilation of everything you’ve done up till now. I also thought it’s kind of rare these days to debut with a full-length release. Makoto: Yeah, all the TRUST bands seem to lead off with a mini-album. But we wanted to release all our existing songs in this album and make a fresh start. That’s why it’s packed with everything we’ve released so far. And this is the first time we’ve really gotten a CD pressed. Now it’s easy to get something pressed, but some people told me they were really grateful that we’ve finally released something with nationwide distribution. I was so moved by that. This time, we were even deeply involved with the details of the jacket, so we’ve put a lot of strong feelings into the package. Yoppy: I really don’t want people to listen to it on random. I hope they’ll listen to the songs in order at least once. That’s the voice of my heart calling out to you. (laughs) Q: It seems like there are new meetings ahead of you. Yoppy: The reason we make CDs is to get people to come to the venues. If people think the CD is good, I hope they’ll come and get the 3D experience at one of our lives. Oda: Over the past five years POT has created a staggering amount of songs, but we chose the ones on this album out of all of those, so please enjoy listening to them. Yoshikun: There are some people we used to meet up with at the live houses all the time that we haven’t been able to see recently. I hope this CD will give us a chance to see them again. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people in regions that we haven’t been able to visit yet. Yoppy: Huh? Are you crying? (they all laugh) -- POT: Yoshikun (Vocals and guitar), Yoppy (Vocals and bass), Oda (Vocals and guitar), Makoto (Drums)
  4. I don't know, he's listed under artist/unit, not talent&model, so I'm thinking that he's probably going to stick with singing as his main talent? It seems like most of the female artists under the same category are also singers and idol groups. The profile does talk about him appealing to a variety of media while in BFN, so I could definitely see him trying to branch out into modelling, TV or acting, but I don't think he intends to stop making music.

Hello Goodbye is a lot better than I thought it would be from the previews. Hope the rest of the mini-album is too. The digest was really underwhelming.

I'm not particularly familiar with the label or any of the bands on it, but it looks like Ains is the main company, and MadWinK (Grieva's label) and 闇革命 (黒百合と影's label) are sublabels. http://ains-a.com/pc/artist.html It also says here (http://ains-a.com/pc/company.html) that the representative/managing director (?) is 藤岡祐一 (Fujioka Yuuichi), who apparently used to be a singer under the name 雪花 (Yukika).

Flower of life Reunion with Marr Haven't heard all of their releases, but I think these two songs are about as pop as they get?
  8. Oh that's good, I was worried when I found out they had already announced the January album. Seems like Daisuke is being a lot more careful after that last hospital trip, so hopefully his health holds up.

GIFT is the only release of theirs I really like. It's probably their most pop release. ^GIFT and Fourth wall are supposed to be paired together conceptually, with GIFT being written around the concept of birth/life and Fourth wall around death, so if you listen to one I would recommend also listening to the other.
  10. So I was bored and skim reading IRON ATTACK!'s Power Push interview from natalie.mu, and I ended up translating a few parts. Not much of what I translated is about music, but I think IRON-CHINO's weirdly upbeat, macho brand of nerdiness is super charming, so I thought I'd share anyway. Original article: http://natalie.mu/music/pp/ironattack ... Q: Aside from CHINO and minusiyon, your other vocalist Yuma is the member who has been in the circle the longest, right? Yuma: That's right. I joined about three years ago. But I've known CHINO-san for longer than that. CHINO: It started when I saw Yuma performing live and I thought "It's gotta be this person!". At the time, he was shirtless, singing enthusiastically. He was really macho, and his high range was also really powerful, so I thought he was an amazing vocalist. Yuma: That brings me back! The only time I used to take my clothes off while I was singing was when I first came to Tokyo, so we're talking about a really long time ago. CHINO: So at the time, I tried to invite him to join the other band that I play in, LIGHTNING, but... Yuma: At the time, I was in another band, so I had to say no. But when he asked me again around the same time that my band broke up, the timing was good so I joined LIGHTNING. CHINO: When he turned me down the first time I started to think that he might be a bit moody or difficult, but when I asked him again he gave me a cheerful "I'll do iiiiiit!". I remember sighing with relief and thinking "Ah, he's that kind of person. That's good." Q: So how did he join IRON ATTACK! ? CHINO: I was already working with Yuma in LIGHTNING, so I wanted to find a different person for IRON ATTACK!, but I really just couldn't find anyone else. Basically as a last resort, I asked him to try singing and he was perfect and fit right in. So he became a regular member of the band. ... minusiyon: You could say that, but as you would expect CHINO-san is like the father in the band. I think I'm probably like the mother. I think IRON ATTACK! is a circle that's bonded together like a family. Yuma: If they're the father and mother, I'm definitely the oldest son. And then Saka-than is the second son, calmly watching the rest of the family. And Kira☆ is the third son who acts like an idiot with me. ... Q: There are drawings of the military commanders from Romance of the Three Kingdoms on the cover of your new album "Tetsugeki sangokushi ~SANGOKU ATTACK!~", but they also represent the band members, right? CHINO: Yes. I thought about various things, but we ended up with the Five Tiger Generals (Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong, from the Shu Han state) drawn on the cover...(**something about how he decided that minusiyon would be Zhao Yun**) Q: You're very attentive to the details of the scene, aren't you? (laughs) CHINO: It seems like Zhao Yun was originally a very beautiful young man, so it seemed like he would work for a woman. But if you really pressed me, I'd say minusiyon is the strategist type. Since she's the band's brain and she's also on the front line as a vocalist... I think someone like Sanada Nobushige would be a good fit. minusiyon: And now we're not even talking about Romance of the Three Kingdoms anymore. (laughs) CHINO: Since Saka-than is always playing bass with his legs spread wide in these wide-leg pants, he has an imposing stance, so I think Guan Yu fits. Plus sometimes he plays seven string bass, and I think the size of that instrument fits the Green Dragon Crescent Blade. Q: The cast really does fit. CHINO: Yuma is totally Zhang Fei. Yuma: Even though I totally thought I was a perfect match for Ma Chao. (laughs) CHINO: But you're totally like the Zhang Fei that appears in the game Dynasty Warriors 8! Because he's so macho! Q: He certainly does seem to have that kind of image. CHINO: And, even though Gensui-kun is the youngest, he's the old veteran general Huang Zhong. It's basically just because the arrows kind of look like drumsticks. Q: Kira☆-san is Ma Chao, isn't he? CHINO: Inside I feel a little conflicted because I don't know if it's really a good fit, but of the Five Tiger Generals only Ma Chao was left. But I think the illustration of him on the album jacket looks the most accurate. Q: If you weren't restricted to the Five Tiger Generals, what kind of miliary commander would Kira☆-san be? Yuma: He'd be Guan Ping. CHINO: Since Saka-than is Guan Yu, because of where he stands on stage I think he should be someone like his son Guan Ping. Because sometimes he has to pay attention to Saka-than's rhythm while performing. But I think Guan Ping would have looked too plain on the jacket, so he became Ma Chao. Q: And so, CHINO-san is Liu Bei. CHINO: Yes. Because if I wasn't Liu Bei the story wouldn't be able to progress. (laughs) Q: If you weren't restricted to the Shu characters, which miliary commander from Romance of the Three Kingdoms would you say you're most like? CHINO: I think I would say Sun Jian from the first generation, or Sun Quan from the third one. I originally liked Wu. I thought the way that they were always fighting with their backs against the wall trying to take over more territory overlaps with my continuing obsession with metal. But it seemed like everyone was telling me "No, CHINO-san is Liu Bei." (laughs) Even though I don't really get it.

I wouldn't say I dislike the other songs I've heard from them, but the only releases of theirs I really like so far are the mini-album GIFT and the song Flower of Life, so I'd say I'm probably in the same boat.

So both of my favourite members of KAT-TUN are out now. Kind of happy Junno is jumping ship at this point, tbh. Surprised he's passing up some of that 10th anniversary tour money though.
  13. I'm guessing it means that they'll pray for the album to be a hit (on the charts) at the temple.

Seriously though, Fuse's singing voice is so cute.

I actually misread the title and thought it said "emotionally charged ballads", but I already wrote all this up, and it's still answering the question, so yeah... It's cheesy, but X Japan's "Tears" always hits me hard because because my father passed away right before I started high school and that was around the time that I was getting into X, so that song has a lot of very strong emotions tied to it for me - especially since it's also about Yoshiki's father. It's really Toshi's voice that sells that song for me though - it's just so gentle, yet so piercing. GLAY's "Koukai" is another really big one for me for the same reason. I've always loved the positive feel of the lyrics ( http://utau-inu.com/centj/translations/koukai_glay.htm) and the way Teru sings "Keep on, you've got to keep on walking" just has such a great mix of vulnerability and power throughout the song. I feel so motivated after listening to it. I think the way Takuro writes about loss in his lyrics in general is very sweet. They are still sad, but they tend to deal more with treasuring what you had and staying positive as you move forward, which is something that has always connected with me since my dad's big saying for us was "Think happy thoughts", and he actually told us one day that he didn't want a funeral when he died - he just wanted us to get together and have a party celebrating his life (which, thankfully, is what we did). You can still enjoy GLAY's music without understanding their lyrics, but when you realize what a song like "Hitohira no Jiyuu" is about it just hits so much harder. "Hitohira no Jiyuu" ( Lyrics: http://utau-inu.com/centj/translations/hitohiranojiyuu_glay.htm )

^Yes, I've got most of his work up to Angel Down as well. There are some decent songs on Angel Down, but I can't say it had anything on the same level as the classic Skid Row tracks. He really needs someone to help him with lyrics, because he just can't do it on his own. He's always been a great performer, but songwriting is really not his strength, and I think somewhere inside he must know that at this point. I actually liked the song Tunnel Vision from the album after it quite a bit, but that's about all I remember from it. He still sounds okay on some of his studio work (the cover he did of Dokken's Alone Again sounds pretty good, IMO), but some of the live footage I saw of him a few years ago was pretty brutal. It's weird that his speaking voice has changed so dramatically as well.

^Sebastian was one of my absolute favourite singers for years, but I've never seen him live either. I actually bought a ticket for one of his solo shows a few years back, but he cancelled it at the last minute, and pretty soon after that his voice started sounding really shot, so I've basically decided that I'm not going to bother unless there's a miraculous Skid Row reunion or something at this point. I still think his older work is great, and I admire his enthusiasm, but his immaturity is definitely off-putting. I've never seen any version of L.A. Guns live either. I love Phil's voice, but I just feel like it would be odd to see them without Tracii, and vice-versa. Plus I was most in love with the band around the release of Waking the Dead, so I got to enjoy watching everything fall apart for them just when it seemed like they were getting back on track. I used to post on both the L.A. Guns forum (well, briefly) and some general glam metal forums, and all the drama between both the fans and the band members in all of the threads about them really wore me down after a while.

I was born in '91, but I had a similar experience with glam metal bands because there was a show on the channel MuchMoreMusic called "Power Hour" that was geared towards 80s-early 90s rock and metal fans, and one day I saw Skid Row's "Youth Gone Wild" video and got hooked on it. I used to tape each episode of it so I could rewatch any videos I liked later. That Cinderella video was one of my favourites as well. The biggest bands for me were definitely Skid Row, L.A. Guns, Hanoi Rocks and Pantera though. I had such a crush on Phil Lewis because of this video: Cowboys from Hell-era Phil Anselmo was also absurdly dreamy.

Not VK, but: I was never really able to get into ROTTENGRAFFTY, but for some reason I really liked their new song "Life Is Beautiful" right away. Then I looked through some of the Japanese comments and saw tons of people going "This reminds me of BOOWY!" and "The hook is totally ripping off Cloudy Heart!". Which would explain a lot, since I love BOOWY. ROTTENGRAFFTY were on a BOOWY tribute album, and BOOWY is basically one of the worst bands to copy anything from since so many people in Japan know their songs, so I doubt it was intentional, but I can sort of hear it. They do sound oddly similar to Himuro at times. Life Is Beautiful https://youtu.be/dSN3dJIl5L8?t=3m34s Cloudy Heart https://youtu.be/1NNlYLNeRJM?t=1m32s
