Shmilly got a reaction from yakihiko in [Aferni's Reviews!] NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST - 銃創
Love this song so much. It's easily one of my favourite NB tracks now. So happy my friend was able to get me a copy from their live.

Shmilly got a reaction from Licio123 in #57: DOGMA by the GazettE
I'll admit that I too was a bit disappointed on my first listen to DOGMA; it's not a lie that on first impression a large chunk of the album seems to blur together, and through perhaps a combination of poor track ordering and little compositional and stylistic variation, a lot of these bland metalcore efforts are sadly forgettable. However, determined to give this album a chance and a fair judgment, I've been listening to it a lot lately and I have to say it's grown on me. There's still several tracks that are so average I decide to skip over them, but some of the mid-album haze begins to show redeeming qualities if you give it the time to.
First the songs I really like: the dramatic and atmospheric atmosphere of OMINOUS easily places it as my favourite track here (much like TO DAZZLING DARKNESS provided an awesome outro to BEAUTIFUL DEFORMITY before it). Certainly had this album followed up on the promise OMINOUS showed as a teaser with more moody, thematic compositions then this could have been one of the GazettE's best releases to date.
Next is probably DERACINE. Toning down the over the top chugging and focusing on powerful and memorable vocals (yes, this is Ruki) makes DERACINE a track well worth repeating in my opinion. Maybe it's partly an effect of this track dividing up other more forgettable songs, but personally I love this one.
While I'm unsure of its positioning in the overall album, BLEMISH is another great track for me. It's energetic with a catchy chorus and I'm sure this will work well towards the end of a concert. As it is, it's a very enjoyable listen in its own right without letting the metalcore influences weigh it down.
Finally honorable mentions go to the two promotional songs DOGMA and DEUX, which are both solid works, and INCUBUS has been growing on me too thanks to the blend of female vox and screams that leads into the chorus.
As for the other (more than) half of this album, unfortunately most of it is fairly average and sadly forgettable. Had the pacing been better considered, with more variety and at least a ballad or something to lighten up the oppressive chugging, this could have been a great release. Ultimately the most disappointing thing about DOGMA for me is that it didn't follow up on the promise the excellent marketing teased us with. I hope the GazettE take a moment now to pause and remember what's important in putting together an album made of entirely new material. If they can find a happy balance between the atmospheric tracks they do so well and more upbeat, energetic songs, I think their next effort will be awesome.

Shmilly got a reaction from nullmoon in 2015 so far
Albums
Aimer - DAWN | This woman has one of the most beautiful voices I've heard in recent memory. Powerful ballads, energetic rock riffs and haunting melodies combine in my favourite album from Aimer so far.
the GazettE - DOGMA | While not their greatest work, the GazettE have presented us with another great album that leans a lot on their heavier side. Thematic OMINOUS, powerful DERACINE and energetic BLEMISH are my top tracks.
MIYAVI - The Others | Expanding on his recent Western influence, MIYAVI's latest album is a stylish, catchy blend of slick guitar riffs and ever improving English vocals. Not to mention the title track is super catchy.
21g - GENORATION | The first full album from these guys (and gal) is a decent effort, with GENO's husky vocals really selling the new group for me. The two single tracks are still the best in my opinion though.
快進のICHIGEKI - The Period | While not as memorable as some of their past efforts, The Period is another solid release oozing with ICHIGEKI style.
Mini-Albums
DADAROMA - dadaism♯1 | One of my favourite releases so far this year. I love all the tracks, but I strongly believe that if these guys focused on the brutal side we get to hear in SEX! and ベルカとストレルカ (as well as the B-sides to their two singles) they would be stronger for it. The jazzy stuff is good but they don't really need that aspect in my opinion. That said, their newest PV is basically stylized porn to a visual kei song, so we can't complain too much. Yoshiatsu's impressive marketing skills have done wonders for bringing these guys to the forefront of indie VK in a matter of months from their foundation.
Minerva - HEAVENS | Another new band with a very promising start. Vocals and guitar work are strong on this release. I hope their next offering has some better mixing though.
「Story of Hope」 - Historia EP | While the clean female vocals struggle to push much further than average for me, what made this release memorable was some phenomenal djent-inspired composition and instrumental work to back them up. If that's your groove, check this one out.
グリーヴァ - 妄想主義者ノ背徳。 | What can I say? These guys incredibly seem to pump out release after release with little deterioration in quality. Another solid mini-album, which while not my favourite so far, has a super catchy and energetic opener and a cool music box interlude that emulates that track's memorable chorus. Their singles this year were also great.
ザアザア - コワイクライ | While their other mini was also good, this one for me is superior and one of my favourite releases of 2015 so far. Its short length is great for repeat listens and each track is memorable in its own right. I'm looking forward to their upcoming third mini-album now too.

Shmilly reacted to The Reverend in #49: 妄想主義者ノ背徳。(Mousou shugisha no haitoku.) by グリーヴァ (Grieva)
Good review! I'm one of those that didn't really love Shuuen; it certainly wasn't bad it just didn't grab me by the balls like oni to kage did.
Weird observation since jigsaw mentioned it; I'll pretty much always let Grieva's SE tracks actually play through. "SE" is usually another word for "skip" but I generally like to listen to theirs.
ETA: Also diggin' their new photos... 'everyone-touch-their-face' in a slightly different position is a bulletproof VK look.

Shmilly got a reaction from Jigsaw9 in #49: 妄想主義者ノ背徳。(Mousou shugisha no haitoku.) by グリーヴァ (Grieva)
Much the same as the above. Oni to Kage was a great album, Shuuen was lacklustre, but pretty much everything else Grieva have put out is great (which is a hell of a lot of material). This is a cool new entry into their extensive discography and I like the way they're experimenting a bit more across the selection of new tracks. I'll admit that it took me a couple of listens to really get into this one, and a couple of the tracks are still skippable for me, but this is another solid release. I also can't really comment too much on the homage aspect as I'm not a massive Diru fan, but despite the endless comparisons I've always been a Grieva supporter.
Here's (not) looking forward to another PV compilation DVD in the next couple of months - the three simultaneous singles, and two songs from this mini all seem to have had PVs made. (Kind of defeats the point of a 'promotional' video to only be viewable on purchase, but I digress.)

Among counting rhymes covered in smoke
I was looking for an answer
Where should I go?
The rope sways and people applaud
Is this the answer? I shout at the sun that bears down upon me
Black sheep, they jeer, a stage of intoxication where they perform without concealing their identity
A slanting ceiling and counting rhymes
Velka and Strelka
I came here
The dancing clown reflected in the mirror
Sings to engrave your tears upon his face
The apple hung upon me falls
I gazed at the moon with the thickening fog
To make sure you were breathing
Don’t cry any more, let your sadness become the heavy rain
I’ll be your umbrella
When I stare into the mirror
The dancing clown wishes he could take your tears away into the glass
When the sky clears without my noticing
I’ll be together again with you

My habit is looking up your name
Who are you, mysterious woman?
The word ‘love’
I love you more than that
‘You are mine’
Love that became dependence

Drowning Fish
In the transparent world of a fish tank
The spilled ink can no longer be extracted
The fish open their mouths
And are immersed in the ink
The truth that money can buy
Dolls lined up in a row
A stand* of conspiracy
Despite the lack of pain
The definition of the freedom to force
People who cannot notice manipulated
Stop talks. No, I am
The fish drowning in their tank
The caged bird in a confined sky
Unaware, we don’t even notice
Neither love nor hate
Fading…
It’s the dark reality
The beautiful things on television
Worsen our vision
Do we assign a price
To even the little warmth that remains?
Fading…
It’s the dark reality
The definition of the freedom to force
People who cannot notice manipulated
Stop talks. No, I am
The fish drowning in their tank
The dust gathering on the light
The suit looking proud about it
Calling himself a hero
Is this…
All there is?
A plane crashes and many die
The figures on television forgotten by tomorrow
A childhood friend I often played with
Committed suicide
It’s so pitiful
I can’t even remember their name
So try to sleep at night
Turn off the lights
The real world, people, desire
Squirm in the night “Goodnight”
*fumidai refers to a kind of step ladder, imagine that dolls are arranged on each step.

Shmilly got a reaction from Kaleidoscope in Music and sex
Do I sound weird if I say... none? Sex for me is about doing something intimate with someone you have intimate feelings for, not jumping on top of the next moving object, thrusting to completion, and changing the playlist.

I have a drawing thread.
I have a music thread.
I have a video thread.
One more couldn't hurt right?
Here's a recent photo I took/graphic I created.
I shoot with a Nikon D5000 (a decent hunk a' junk. I want to buy a new one)
and I used Adobe Illustrator for this.
It was a sunrise above Boston on my way down.

Shmilly reacted to NICKT in MIYAVI - The Others
I'm not the most adept at being knowledgeable when it comes to the makings of music, I can't tell a riff riff from a woof woof and all the doofs sound doofy to me, so just as someone who listens to music because it makes my dick tingle, I'm saying that this is probably the only Miyavi album/single that I would not be ashamed if I had purchased it.

Shmilly got a reaction from beni in MIYAVI - The Others
Not a proper review per se, just my thoughts as I'm listening for the first time. I always look forward to Miyavi's releases because he has such a diverse history. The man's a talented guitarist and musician, and his vocals have been steadily improving. Now I've finally gotten around to listening to this album, I thought I'd take some notes.
Cruel - Even for an artist with as varied a career as Miyavi, this is yet another step in a different direction. I'm getting a British Alternative scene vibe from this one, maybe some influence from Muse and Arctic Monkeys. It sets a tone and makes an intriguing opening track.
Into The Red - Back into the catchy if slightly repetitive chorus+riff style of pop-rock Miyavi has taken to recently. Synths make the chorus pop a little more than if it was just guitar like we're used to. Overall not particularly memorable though.
Come Alive - This immediately came across to me as a more lively follow up to 'Secret' from his last self-titled album. Driven again by that guitar motif. Female backing vocals and some corny trumpets shake it up a little, and the slower section breaks up what might otherwise be another quite repetitive song.
Mysterious Alien Girl - Funky track with another distorted guitar motif underlying the whole song. Miyavi returns to his favourite pastime of sticking the riff on a looper and playing around over the top of it. Sadly(?) the solo is the best part of this one.
Let Go - I always liked this one from the single release. It's a song that monopolizes on the catchy guitar riff and chorus to get your feet tapping. Some might criticise it for being so short, but I think that really helps this one from sticking around too long (ahem, most of Sadie's GANGSTA).
Odyssey - Panning the guitar in the intro immediately makes this one stand out from the rest so far. Then we hear some Japanese for the first time. The weird woah sample is odd at the beginning, but as it repeats through the song it earns its place. This is kind of a simple upbeat track but I enjoyed it.
All The Way - This song felt to me like an amalgamation of all of Miyavi's recent efforts. There's the guitar motif, the electronic elements, the repetitive chorus, the softer bridge, and the sweet solo. Pretty groovy. Also the ending is nice.
Unite - Immediately reminded me of the SAMURAI SESSIONS collab era. It's actually quite nice to let Miyavi's vocals take a back seat so he can get on with that slick guitar work he's so good at.
The Others - I'm surprised to find the title song of this album so late in the tracklist. There's not a lot for me to say other than, to me, this is one of the most catchy songs I've heard this year. I love it. Another fun solo too.
Calling - Some solid vocals here (especially by Miyavi's standards). Guitar is also great. In fact, this is in essence what Miyavi has been doing for years, just with a layer of English lyrics and synths mixed in. I enjoyed it.
Shangri-La - More Japanese! XD A little bit too repetitive for my liking but it's certainly an interesting way to close the album. At least the groove is catchy and there's some fun guitar work again, so I think this one will continue to grow on me with more listens.
Overall an interesting new turn since his last full album. It feels like Miyavi is modernising and westernising, but in a way that for the most part retains his personality, energy and style. Unlike ONE OK ROCK's recent release, I'm happy that Miyavi hasn't just completely changed his style to appeal to an English speaking audience. True, he's been using English for a while, but he's always in control of the music he makes, and that's something to be respected in such a lengthy and varied career.
