  1. Were CoЯe the Child popular here / in the Western fanbase at the time they were around? Sometimes it's hard to tell how people got into things. For example: a lot of people only tried Dué Le Quartz because Miyavi was in it, not the other way around. Trying to see if UnsraW's success was just a natural continuation of Yuuki's old band, or did he just happen to get lucky by doing the same thing but at the right place and time.

What prompted me to ask was that I was reading about how many of UnsraW's early songs were actually rerecordings of CtC songs, so I was wondering why they didn't make it big the first time. I guess better production, different people with different influences in the band, that style of music being desired in the scene, and YouTube helped take 2 go much better.

Since Yuuki was the main songwriter of both bands, he simply imported a lot of the material from CTC into UnsraW. Even their breakthrough track, -9-, was originally a CTC song, there's a teaser of it at the end of their last live sold single, and it was played live several times.

I think it was just the result of new band hype, a solid first single, and lucky exposure to the west early through YouTube which was just taking off for music. To be fair they never reached any heights in Japan beyond the average VK band, they played their onemans at Takadanobaba AREA and things like that.

CTC was a cult fave back in the West back then. They were present in every trader's catalogue and favorites list, but clearly that in itself was still very niche. I guess UnsraW's popularity, as @WhirlingBlacksaid, resulted from hype and a solid first single. Being associated with SPEEDDISK and playing in their events didn't hurt either - more money, better production/distribution, more exposure and popularity.
