  1. I assumed Toshiya wrote Devote My Life since he wrote Midwife. I knew he wrote Values of Madness since I listened to his radio interview the other day when he debuted it but I didn’t know the others (I mean I could guess the first track was Kaoru lol) so thanks for posting. Strange that there are no Shinya songs and only two Die songs. Shinya said in an interview recently that it was more collaborative and he couldn’t say for sure who the main songwriter for each song was.

I don’t. I listen to Converge quite often. But “done well” is the key phrase here. Listen, I’m exaggerating, but I mostly hate Shinya’s knee slappin’ ho down drum pattern and I’m getting tired of Kyo’s chaotic everything-but-the-kitchen-sink vocal freak outs. There are great elements in the song, but there are just as many bad ones.

Also, just like I thought, Followers is my jam.

That’s fair. I assumed you were taking about the dissonant chords since you had similar criticisms of midwife and some WtD songs iirc. The drum beat at the beginning is a bit goofy I’ll give you that, but at least he’s trying new stuff.

Mah boys that heavy chunky ass riff in 谿壑の欲 is the SHIT!

This was the song I was least looking forward to based on the samples but it actually turned out to be great. This song was definitely the biggest surprise for me. That and now heavy the first two songs were. And how beautiful Aka is.

Real talk, Devote My Life is borderline unlistenable.

Lol you would hate mathcore then (Converge, Botch, Vein, early Norma Jean, etc.) Personally I love it when it’s done well but it’s not for everyone.

  4. If there was one more ballad in the first half (maybe after Devote My Life) I think the balance would be better. I LOVE the heavy tracks on here but having like 5 in a row at the beginning of the album is kind of bizarre. It’s weird because with Arche I though there were too many ballads and really wanted another track like The Inferno. Still I think the album is more enjoyable to listen to all the way through than Arche, I just wish the production and track order was a bit more polished. Thankfully there’s nothing that I really feel like skipping like Sustain the Untruth or Magayasou or Soshaku (good chorus boring verses) this time. Right now this isn’t topping  DSS or Uroboros for me but it’s up there with their better albums in terms of aligning with my personal taste. Then again I love all of their different eras for different reasons so even my least favorite (Macabre/Kisou/Withering to Death) are still great albums.

  5. Aka to me is like the third part in a trilogy. Lotus, Rinkaku and Aka. They all have a similar feel. Instrumentally heavy but beautiful.

So far I’m loving the album. My only complaints would be the really compressed production (I really prefer the production and mixing on the last two albums), the weird crackly clipping that appears on some of the harsh vocals, and the lack of more long songs/progressive song structures. But overall it’s great. The lyrics to Devote My Life are pretty concerning to me though after a lot of high profile cases of musicians/celebrities committing suicide or overdosing recently. I usually like depressing lyrics but not when they are this straightforward. Hopefully he’s just trying to be grimdark and edgy.

  6. I can’t read the 2chan thread anymore because it’s become, as one user put it, a ネタバレ祭り.

I’m gonna try to sleep for a while and then check for leaks. I am so pumped though, people are saying that it contains elements of all of their albums plus both of sukekiyo’s albums. Apparently the first track 軽蔑と始まり is pretty nuts (Kyo said it’s his favorite song on the album) and Aka is very pretty.
