    I guess I'll be the first one to introduce myself? Thank you @togzfor starting this club btw! I have been thinking about creating one myself as well~ ^^ (it works a lot better than just having that one single thread)

    Name: plastic_rainbow
    Age: 23
    Years studied: 3 years of formal Japanese classes at University, the rest is self-taught so a total of 5 years probably
    Estimated level: I'd say moderate to advanced. I've gotten rusty ever since I left uni. :/
    Knowledge of Hiragana/Katakana: All
    Kanji: 1500-2000 characters I think? That doesn't mean I can write them all tho lol, but I will usually recognize them if I see them.
    What is your main goal with studying Japanese?: Be able to read faster and comprehend the contents cuz lawd that takes so much time. I want to reach at a level where I can read Japanese novels because even reading manga is still quite hard for me.
    What materials have you used before?: Genki Elementary + Intermediate, and a few other books which I can't remember the titles of. Some of them came with audio cds. I also tried Lang-8 for a while.

    Well, nice to meet you all!
    よろしく!^^/

    I've only listened it through twice so far, but I'm diggin it. I mean... Music is so subjective based on peoples emotions, how they connect, and what mood they're in and this is definitely an easy listening vibe for me. I do have to agree that some tracks feel like they're missing that small boost or spice. But overall I think it's a good move on their end. As long as they're having fun.

    Hey fellas, what's up?! any Shikari fans out there?

    Their new album just dropped today, and I'm still recollecting my thoughts on it.

    To start, I'd say this one is most definitely a grower, so this ain't my final opinion yet. This is a fundamentally different album, mainly because of the composition style. Rou himself said they were going for a simpler, "less is more" vibe, and I think they fully achieved that idea (since I liked so many tracks), even if I don't think it was the best course of action. Lyrically, this is the usual ES: clever (Undercover Agents), heartfelt (An Ode to Lost Jigsaw Pieces), always taking sides (Take My Country Back), sending relevant positive messages (Airfield), besides one or two less interesting ones (Rabble Rouser). Musically, we first gotta talk about the best track in the album IMHO. 'Take my Country Back' is the perfect mix of old and new Shikari. Tempo changes, Strong drums, catchy as fuck chorus... I BET you will keep shouting "GET UP GET UP AND FEEL THE RIIIIIISING TIDE" like crazy, it's tailor-made for arena concert. I can aready imagine those live edits the guys do so well making this one a staple on their concerts from now on. Brilliant track. That being said, I don't know if the decision to simplify the compositions was the best one. Most of the tracks are great, but they are missing some kind of kick. some kind of OMPH, a breakdown here and there, some of the usual craziness. You can see that clearly on 'Live Outside' and 'Rabble Rouser'. Both are great tracks, but they have a few verses that sound so empty, if you know what I mean. The album ver. of 'RR' is much better than the edit one, but I still feel it lacked a better guitarwork, it lacked the good mess Shikari is known for. But that's okay, the guys are experimenting, it's a special moment for them. This is a result of personal experiences and emotions. I think they are fully aware of what makes us tick, and if they somehow get what they've learned here and mix with their wild side, I'm positive it will only make a better future Shikari.

    Best track: Take my Country Back;
    Above average: Live Outside, Airfield, Rabble Rouser, Undercover Agents, An Ode to Lost Jigsaw Pieces;
    Average: The Sights, Shinrin-yoku;
    Below average: Revolt of the Atoms;

    I recommend looking up for a 320kbps rip tho, for full Shikari pleasure.

    Would love to hear some thoughts on it!

    I don't think it's amazing.... but it's not awful. I think with the right production and more practice they have potential to find a decent sound.

    Reviving cuz apparently I never wrote in this thread. The last REAL jrocker crush I had was Hitsugi of Nightmare lol but tbh I don't consider liking a musician for their talent while then also being attractive means I got a crush on them. My feels would actually hurt over tsugi. But now I'm generally apathetic towards celebrity/idol crushes and overly emotional about people I know in real life. Loooool

    togz reacted to CAT5 in Why do you still use last.fm?
    I always enjoyed having a visual representation of my music taste, and of course the stats are neat too. I much prefer the old library, though.

    And honestly, as much as last.fm has gone downhill, the site has become such an integral part of my online experience, that it would be next to impossible for me to unyoke myself from it. *sigh*

    Their output has been a bit hit & miss for me, but they've definitely got my attention, so I'm keeping an eye on them.

    I like LIQUID VAIN, but those harsh vocals kinda ruin it for me. Really diggin the melodic-punk vibes on 邪崩 tho,

    togz reacted to zaa_zaa in RAZOR
    Their first release was amazing. I could clearly hear how much Koryu and Tetsuya brought music-wise, Tsurugi added a lot as well on top of that.

    The other two.... The title songs are kinda weird, which is not the main problem. The b-sides are so vanilla, that a thought appeared that they do them purely to please their female fans.

    And there's zero-to-none of elements that made their first release to stand out in the world of visual-kei.
