fictioninhope reacted to CAT5 in CAT5's 2014 Favorites!
2014 has yielded yet another year of wonderful music, and here's my usual self-indulgent run-down of the albums and EPs I enjoyed most.
My tone this year is a bit more personal and subjective than I tried to be in 2013, and my list isn't as long either.
Thanks for checking it out nonetheless.

CAT5's Favorite Japanese Releases of 2014

    clepsydra by chouchou merged syrups.

    Sample: 橙鳴る

clepsydra took me by complete surprise after last year's thoroughly disappointing
debut "since". chouchou merged syrups. aren't just following cinema staff's
blueprint on how to play emo rooted indie-rock/pop anymore,
they're actually making it their own this time.

Passage of Time by Cloud nine(9)

    Sample: Passage of Time

lop abuse on somebody was, for me, one of the most promising young
post/math-rock bands out of Japan. But since they've disbanded their
guitarist has gone on to join Cloud nine(9), which has, again, become
one of the most promising young Japanese post/math-rock bands.
Surely this is fate. Oh, and it's completely free over @ bandcamp

    HEADACHE AND HEARTBURN by CONCERT

    Sample: 曖昧さ回避

This release took me completely off guard and would have completely slipped
under my radar if not for a good friend of mine. CONCERT's sound seems to
draw heavily off of 70's soft-rock and psychedelia while employing quirky and
forward-thinking production. I imagine this is what a collaboration between
lamp and cornelius might sound like.

    BRIGHT TIME by EGO-WRAPPIN'

    Sample: 太陽哀歌

EGO-WRAPPIN's last full-length album Steal a Person's Heart was an underwhelming
effort, fraught with various musical style except the one they do best. So it's great
to hear them return to their jazzy roots on the BRIGHT TIME EP. But with only
4 tracks and the entire thing recorded in mono, it's such a tease.

    JariBu by JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra

    Sample: Wild Pansy

I'm only aware of three different Afrobeat bands from Japan, and each year it
seems like these bands take turns outdoing each other - 2012 was the year
of KINGDOM☆AFROCKS, 2013 was REGGAELATION INDEPENDANCE,
and so 2014 inevitably falls back to the JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra. They've locked
the grooves down this year and delivered their finest album yet.

    homephone TE by macaroom

    Sample: Kingdom

Another obscure recommendation from a friend that would have surely slipped my
radar. macaroom creates dreamy ambient-pop and homephone TE is an
intoxicatingly immersive album from start to finish. There are, however, 2 tracks
sung entirely in Croatian that might raise an eyebrow at first.

    5 - 1 + 1 = by mothercoat

    Sample: trickster

mothercoat....consistently creative, and yet consistently underrated. They've
been around for over a decade and yet somehow their music seems to
    get lost amongst international Japanese-indie fans - old and new. 5 - 1 + 1 =
is a reference to the changes in their band lineup, and each track is a
distinct reflection of those changes (track 1 - with old guitarist, track 2
without guitarist, track 3 with new guitarist). But three tracks simply
isn't enough, so I can't wait to hear what else they've got in store.

    my letter by my letter

    Sample: ルーザー!

A friend of mine shared this band's demo with me back in 2011, and while
I remember diggin' it, I'd completely forgotten they existed by this year. I'm
glad they were finally able to get around to releasing an album, though.
Bands like シャムキャッツ and ミツメ released solid records this year, but
my letter takes the cake as my easy-going indie-rock album of the year.
Lots of great guitar interplay and you can't beat the combo of male/female vocals.

    Elephant by orcaorca

    Sample: Clockwork Lovers

orcaorca is the instrumental outing of 2 members from the electronic
group ChouChou (no, not chouchou merged syrups. ha) Glitchy, electro-acoustic
bliss that weaves itself seamlessly in and out of ambient soundscapes
    and minimal-tehcno pulsation.

    Koko by Satomimagae

    Sample: Mikkai

I don't often hear music like this out of the modern J-folk world, so
Satomimagae was an instant love for me. Her music has an exceedingly
dense melancholic atmosphere and conjures up images of both
depression and desolation. Fantastic album recorded with the perfect
    amount of intimate rawness.

Rhapsody in beauty by THE NOVEMBERS

    Sample: Blood Music.1985

Rhapsody in beauty is yet another testament to THE NOVEMBER's continued
growth and further accentuates their artistic proclivities. It's a dynamic album-
from abrasive shoegaze, dark grunge, to angelic acoustic numbers and more.
THE NOVEMBERS are clearly inspired and HAVE been for the past few
years. Even if it's taken them about 6 years, they've completely won me
over as a fan and are now one of my all-time favorites.

    CAO by アルカラ

    Sample: 愚痴ばっかりのローレロレロ

arukara have been on fire since 2009, but this is by far my favorite album
from them yet. The band's sound, which combines all of the hookiness and
buoyancy of pop music with the multifaceted indie-rock ingenuity of an
early 9mm parabellum bullet, has been refined to perfection.

    IMAGINARY MONO-FICTION by ヒトリエ

    Sample: 生きたがりの娘

I've long thought that some vocaloids had cool backing music, but being
that I can't stand vocaloids, it was always an unfortunate arrangement for me.
Thankfully, vocaloid producer wowaka took his colorful ideas and translated
them into an actual band. The results have been splendid thus far. For me,
the jury is still out on their first full-length, but this mini definitely delivers.

    ふつうのしあわせ by ふつうのしあわせ

    Sample: キャプテンにはなれない

I saw this band described somewhere as bloodthirsty butchers meets
PANICSMILE and thought that was an apt description. Especially the
comparison to the latter. ふつうのしあわせ or "Ordinary Happy" play
wonderfully spastic, disharmonic post-punk with a trumpet thrown in
for good measure, cuz why the hell not?

    攻撃的国民的音楽 by 八十八ヶ所巡礼

    Sample: -超感覚的宇宙-

If you've been following my "best-Of" lists over the past few years, then
you've probably noticed that 88kasyo junrei's albums have made an appearance
every time. I'm biased as fuck and I can't help it. Their formula is like a
nonstop barrage of endorphins on my musical pleasure zones - heaps of
melody, quirky and eccentric songwriting, unhinged yet groovy
instrumentation, just the right amount of excessive noodling...so, yeah. There ya go.

(not) NUCLEAR LOVE (or affection) by 印象派

    Sample: ライ! ライ! ライ!

There's nothing particularly outstanding about inshowha, but they make
extremely well produced and catchy jpop. It also helps that their image/gimmick
neither overshadows nor detracts from their actual music, so the duo exudes
a kind of earnest charm. I was also pretty surprised at how well crafted this
mini album was. It flows perfectly from one track to the next and you can
tell actual thought was put into the songwriting. This isn't a release of
sloppily glued together singles or filler tracks. Quality Jpop right here.

    NO UNDERGROUND by 撃鉄

    Sample: やっちゃおう

Gekitetsu's first full album expands on the sound they became known for on
their first 2 EPs - vivacious post-punk chock full of singy-shouty vocals,
discordant, angular guitar riffs, heady basslines, and nu-wave-y drumming.
These guys are always a blast to listen to and definitely worth a try if you're
into the coarser side of Japanese indie.

Hi there! Im Rin, im very happy to found this website and this community. I've been into the visual kei scene for 10 years now, and i love every bit of it, with it's flaws. My style is also influenced by the Host kei, gyaruo, visual and street goth styles... My musical taste is a very wide range, im really a sucker for everything that are candy for my ears, but here is a few example:
    Dir en Grey
    Mejibray
    AvelCain
    Diaura
    Deadman
    メリー
    D I V
    Nocturnal Bloodlust

not mentioning the western music.. hehe

Im from hungary btw, but i speak fluent english, and im also friendly but just a bit introvert!
Hopefully i will make some friend, that i we could talk about music and stuff!
    Thank you everyone

fictioninhope got a reaction from Visutox in #19: Dir en grey - ARCHE
I was so excited for Dir en grey’s release of ARCHE that it physically hurt me. After the disasters that were DUM SPIRO SPERO and Sustain the untruth my iTunes library was in dire need of something worth listening to. I was hoping ARCHE would satiate that need. My first listen through was fantastic. I was so crazy over it I couldn’t say a thing about it that wasn’t in all caps telling my limited number of uninterested Facebook friends about how they were missing out on a fantastic album. Then I listened to it again and the hype was gone. It wasn’t even a slow burn out; it was like everything I had imagined the album to be after the first listen came crashing down like a house of cards soaked in gasoline and lit on fire. As I replayed the album I kept asking myself what happened. I found I had to force myself to make it even halfway through many of the tracks.

I loved “Un deux” but I don’t feel like it’s placement at the start was the best decision. “咀嚼” was listenable but it would have sounded better without the Cookie Monster feature. In fact, the entire album could have done without it. I was not aware he was a member of Dir en grey so color me surprised at his frequent inclusion on this album. I enjoyed “Phenomenon” and the almost “Disabled Complexes” groove it had to it, especially in the beginning. “Cause of fickleness” is probably the worst excuse for a song that Dir en grey has ever released. The fact that the band put some fairly decent music on this album and then thought it would be a great idea to include it almost angers me. I would have been content if it had transitioned directly from “Phenomenon” into “濤声” which is a mellow easy-to-listen-to song that made me think of the unplugged version of “艶かしき安息、躊躇いに微笑み.” I can’t say “輪郭” is a favorite of mine but compared to a large chunk of ARCHE it is a quality song worth listening to.  “Chain Repulsion” was enjoyable except for the weird distortion on the guitars near the middle that hurt my ears.

The rest of the main album was more or less a blur of nope. Either it wasn’t memorable or it was just flat out horrible. I pretend “Sustain the untruth” doesn’t exist. “The Inferno” is nothing more than leftover trash from DSS and I can’t say “Revelation of Mankind” was much different. Going into the bonus disc, I sincerely believe “and Zero” should have been the album opening track. The word ‘gorgeous’ doesn’t even properly express what I think of it. I could listen to it on loop for days and never grow tired of it. “てふてふ” was another highlight overall. It gave me a lot of Withering to death./Marrow of a Bone feels. It boggles the mind why these two tracks weren't put on the main album instead of the rather replaceable tracks that somehow made the cut. The remix, acoustic and crossover tracks were not even worth the effort it took to make myself listen to them. I would even go so far as to say they weren’t even worth releasing to the public.

All in all, this album was disjointed and not deserving of any of the hype it received. Songs that should have been on it were reduced to bonus disc material. Song placement was thrown out the window. Most of the songs are lackluster and uninspired and it has me worried that maybe this brilliant band has run out of worthwhile creations to offer to the masses. The few good songs were not enough to keep me interested. Add this to the list of yet another painful miss in the collection.

fictioninhope got a reaction from ghost in #17: THE"420"THEATRICAL ROSES by MEJIBRAY
THE"420"THEATRICAL ROSES is the first thing by Mejibray that I have listened to that wasn't their cover of Dir en grey's "Cage." I figured that if their cover of Cage was so good, this album would be pretty good too. I was sincerely hoping I'd love the hell out of 420. Sad to say I was disappointed instead. The amount of Dir en fanboyism in pretty much every track was a letdown for me as I was hoping for something that would set Mejibray as its own entity in my mind instead of "that band that covered Cage." I got the feeling of a band that was still trying to find their footing but couldn't quite get the traction they were looking for.

My experience with 420 was a game of "do not push the next button, you need to listen to all of it." Each song seemed to bleed into the next, only letting me know the track was even switching with a small bit of silence between them. It went on forever and it definitely wasn't in a good way. Saying I had to force myself to give it a re-listen is a bit of an understatement. When I would think it was time to start the album over I'd look at iTunes and there would still be 10 tracks left. I don't feel like this band has enough in them yet for a 17-track album to not be completely exhausting for the listener. Based solely on 420, I don't feel like Mejibray is a good match-up with ballads, at least in terms of vocals. They were the worst part and only managed to make the album feel even longer.

I can tell this band has so much potential to be something awesome, it's right there at their fingertips. They just failed to fully reach out and grasp it with this album. I will say that this is going to be a band I will keep my eyes on in the future with hope that one day they'll surprise me.  "hatred × tangle red × hunger red" was the one track I did enjoy and would recommend to others. Rating this one is really hard for me as I didn't outright hate it but I wasn't in love either. It wasn't horrific but it's not an album I'd tell people they needed to listen to.

The Mamas and The Papas are my ultimate fave over just about everything. And who doesn't love rock music full of cellos courtesy of Apocalyptica?

Yay, Reavox! You posted an intro! CAT5 is definitely one you'll want to look through all of his uploads in the general forum. I think you'll have a blast.

I'm doing my best! I got another one to tempt into joining soon and I enlisted fictioninhope to help me too. *evil laughter*

7 years ago a buddy told me about a Japanese Post Rock band named downy. I was thoroughly impressed. It got me interested in Japanese music but I didn't yet start exploring. Mostly because I wasn't sure where to start.

A few months ago I found a Progressive House producer named Aran by accident. This was the first time I had heard House music come from that side of the world and if Aran was a reflection of House music in Japan then I definitely wanted to hear more.

Finally, I was stalking ender-ender's Last.fm the other day when I investigated a band called Told. This is the first time I've heard an Indie Rock band from Japan and they were good enough to make me realize that I couldn't ignore music from this country anymore. Ender-ender invited me to this forum to make some friends and learn about the music that's been eluding me for almost a decade.

I also want to mention a band called Muxu from Malaysia that was recommended to me along with downy. They made some the most chill, ambient music I've ever heard.

So that's my small history with music from Japan. It's a pleasure to meet you guys and I look forward to settling in here.

I'm Staci and ender-ender convinced me to join. I was on here forever ago but bailed and forgot my old un.

I'm a wannabe professional photographer getting ready to go back to school to finish a Japanese associate degree(that I started working on in 2007 oops) with the hope to go on for a bachelors and masters in anthropology cause it's just money, right? -silently cries forever- I enjoy anime and manga(ask to know, too many to list). TV shows about warrior princesses, clones, women in prison and WWI era England upperclass. Movies about wizards and dinosaurs are also high up on my list. Books of all kinds. Also enjoy video games with fighters, RPGs and pokémon being my faves. I am a music junkie and listen to just about everything from 1920s big band music to screamy angry metal. I got into the Japanese music scene what feels like eons ago with Ayumi Hamasaki which somehow turned into Dir en grey, Malice Mizer etc etc etc. I will forever be bitter about DELUHI disbanding. For all eternity. It was the worst April Fool's non-joke since a girl told me she got me Spice Girls concert tickets in elementary school.

My list of faves is vast so here's a clip of the Japanese variety:
    DELUHI
    NAINE
    exist trace
CROSSFAITH (assholes... all of them adorable assholes..)
    Kaya/Hora/Schwarz Stein
    DANGER GANG
Koda Kumi (non-vk/non-rock don't care try to fight me)
    girugamesh
    Aural Vampire
    LOST ASH
    Dir en grey

    I have a really bad habit of typing too much so if I do please just tell me to shut up. ;;

I previewed this post like 100 times to make sure it wasn't horrible but it's still horrible.
