I study Japanese, lol.

My friend just graduated with a major in Japanese. She said there's a clear cut off when the class suddenly gets too hard for the actual weeaboos who are only in it for the veekay, animu and kawaii bishonens. If you can get past that cut off, you have successfully proven yourself to not be a weeaboo. She said at her university they start dropping like flies and suddenly the people in the class are tolerable and you can hold normal conversations without it derailing into what is your favourite anime.

Either way, I plan to never take another Japanese class in my life. I'd end up like the Virginia Tech kid.

I majored in Japanese too. But I started before I even knew visual kei or heard a single jrock band, and the only anime I knew was Sailor Moon. And to be honest, when I was stuyding it at university, people who wanted to write their papers about manga and stuff like that barely existed, or were frowned upon/laughed at. As Arith said, the few people that maybe only took it up because they liked Naruto usually disappeared within the first 3 months. There's a high drop-out rate in the first weeks in general.

She has a point, we do have a cut off like that, 50% fail the first year, and thankfully I made it past that~. But I still think you do kind of qualify as a weeaboo if you study Japanese even if you don't care about anime, visual kei, etc.

@Champ213; Ugh i wish my uni was like that, we had a lecture about Pokémon today and we actually used to have a course (thankfully it was dropped when I started) called "Japanimation" where you'd watch anime and write a paper about the ~*deeper meaning*~

Plus Miyavi appeared in one of our lectures. I mean seriously.

Well, when I started studying the huge jrock/vk boom hadn't reached Europe yet. So that wasn't really an issue, I have no clue if the courses are now filled with pink-haired Ancafe fangirls.

(As a matter of fact, I only got into jrock because I thought it would be helpful for learning the language if I listened to some japanese music, and since I never was that much into pop, I searched the net for some heavier stuff.)

Anime was a fringe topic in some courses, but with its good right, there are a lot of Animes with a deeper meaning (Hotaru no haka, just to name one), and for better or worse, it is an important part of japanese pop culture (unlike visual kei, which is/was really just a fad). But our institute's emphasis was on cultural history, so popculture was only a minor topic. I did once visit a course though where we would translate japanese song lyrics (jpop lyrics that is), and it was actually a nice diversion from just reading news papers, Haruki Murakami or Murasaki Shikibu. My school has an anime class as well. A couple of my friends took it and talk about how much they enjoy it. They then took a graphic novel and manga class. One of the topics of the anime class is to watch hentai with tentacle rape: that falls under the "obscure" topic, apparently. Personally, I'd feel like I would need Pro-Activ or something as soon as I walked out of the class. That, along with having to watch porn for a grade doesn't sit well with me.

I dunno, I do actually watch Japanese cartoons, but I don't feel that makes me a gross weaboo. I guess that's kind of like saying smoking pot once or twice a month doesn't make you a pothead, but I think there's a difference between being knowledgeable about it and being obsessed with it. I also don't like talking about it in person, nor Jrock / VK for the matter, and feel uncomfortable when people actually do. Here, there are no social stigmas attached to talking about your home-made MMO when you meet someone, so I guess I'm one of the few people left on campus who see a problem with that (this has a\ back story unrelated to the topic, so I apologize if I'm being vague).

But whatever: I am content admitting that I play children's card games and blog about Japanese transvestites who sing out of tune for fun.

Well, I smoke pot, listen to jrock, and play video games (and since 99.9% of video games are of Japanese origin). Does that make me a weeaboo?

Am I weeaboo for contemplating about switching from a German car to a Japanese car? So much cheaper!

My family haz japanese dogs...

th_KL.jpg

I was considering getting one!!!!

(Actually I really want a German Shorthaired Pointer but they're super super energetic and I don't have the energy myself to commit to a dog like that and most importantly a home with a large yard for them to run and burn energy. Weimaraner is my current choice and found that it's easier to find Weimaraner breeders in my area then Shiba Inu breeders.)

My biggest fault is that even though I am part Japanese, I honestly don't think I inherited the Japanese hair. I mean, it has some qualities you find in Japanese hair (super thick and straight) but it won't style for shit. There is a few fail attempts at me trying to Vee-kay it and it just end up being a greasy nappy mess. :( Unfortunately I can confirm that I did go out in public on a few occasions with my hair being a total grease ball.

your hair looks awesome from what I've seen.

plain asian hair doesn't look omgwow either, it's the Japanese haircare being lightyears more advanced than western.

I generally use professional grade European stuff, but if I have extra money (or need some deep repair), I always spend it in Japanese cosmetic corners. :<

Their hairsprays are much better too - no sticky hair, no mess, but for a significantly higher price, compared to other stuff.

Maybe my problem was not me but the cheap crap I bought from the local grocery store then LOL? Well either way, I have no desire to style my hair like that anymore. :P I still have to flat iron it though or it's really frizzy :(

The thought of an anime club makes me cringe, just because most anime fans I've known have been the screaming, screeching, ADHD type girls . . .

I don't think eating Japanese food and snacks, in this case, Pocky is a weeaboo thing.

It's general, food is universal.

Would one get called an acting Mexican for enjoying nachos with guacamole,

when they're just eating it because they like it?

Besides, it's sold worldwide, not exclusively in Japan,

and in some countries like in the U.K have it in different name.

I don't think to prefer everything Japanese makes one a weeaboo,

that's just plain stupid + racist,

like the whole sentiment on Made In Japan things in the U.S.A after WW II.

They (peoples who have huge desires to understood all Japanese related, from pop culture to politic and history and sincerely attracted by the country) may just be called a Japanophile and it's not a weeaboo-ness.

I understood a weeaboo as someone who dress like particular VK bands or anime characters,

but feels so bad ass about it though they may truly doesn't know the whole thing about it.

And just like it because everyone they know doing it or because "it's so kawaii/sugoii/etcii"

Or somewhat a poseur/poser, you know.

example: someone who just added random Japanese like kawaii anytime they get chance,

without caring their talking partner understand what they are saying or not.

That just dumb + not cool, and when asked by someone who actually learn the language,

they just have no idea how to answer it.

Sorry for being serious, but i guess some people get the meaning of weeaboo wrongly :s

I live by a Japanese grocery store so I go there about once a week for my weekly grocery trips and always I leave with sashimi. I am probably gonna die from brain worms or something from eating so much raw fish.

Also I'm just being sarcastic about the Japanese car thing :P(Plus seriously they are so much cheaper to maintain)

I don't see really see how that makes one a weeaboo. Unless you're doing it for the sake of moving to Japan and acting Japanese. If it's just to understand then it doesn't differ from studying any other language. You can't fully understand people unless you have some understanding of their language, because it's such an integral part of culture. But then again I've always been studying various languages for fun. Japanese is just double the fun because you get to draw pictures!

^ mana-sama????

I followed a person around london for an hour in 2006 who I though was Hyde and it turned out to be an elderly chinese woman

best post ever, lol. though I could see how this mistake could be made, tbqh.

I don't really have any weaboo moments. I've never been to a con, never cosplayed or dressed ~veekay~. I used to watch anime occasionally, but haven't now for a few years. Have only ever read three manga series. I do know Japanese, but I started learning it long before any Japanese music interest, or anime for that matter. I'm not and never have been obsessed with pocky. I've never even had it, actually. It doesn't sound very appealing lol.

I guess I've just never bought into the ~scene~ as it were. =/
