Yuletide is the time from the 24th of December to the 6th of January. Yule was a pagan "festival" similar to christmas, but with time it evolved into what we know as christmas. So in 2014 it's basically christmas time. I think.

here it comes.
first single 'Élan' off the band's yet untitled new album will be released on February, 13th.

“Oh, while I live to be the ruler of life, Not a slave
To meet life as a powerful conqueror, and nothing exterior to me will ever take command of me.”
- Walt Whitman
Commented NIGHTWISH keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen: “This beautiful quote from my hero Uncle Walt was the starting point for writing 'Élan'. The underlying theme of the song is nothing less than the meaning of life, which can be something different for all of us. It´s important to surrender yourself to the occasional 'free fall' and not to fear the path less travelled by. 'Élan' is a wonderful teaser for the full-length album, giving out a little taste, but revealing very little of the actual Journey of Grandeur to come…”

CD:
01. Élan (Album Version)
02. Élan (Radio Edit)
03. Élan (Alternate Version)
04. Sagan (Non-Album Bonus Track)

I think there's a big chance she'll stay. By far the most talented vocalist they've had, and she can easily handle both Tarja and Anette's song perfectly well as well. And she's always come off as a great girl as well, ever since the begining of After Forever and till now.

Awful coverart and awful band picture. No expectations for the album whatsoever either. Don't even think I checked out the last one.

What do you mean? It capture's Nightwish's essence of "turn everything up to 11" mentality perfectly. After all, there have been some absolutely hideous photo shoots with Tarja. I think they have a quota of one ugly band picture per singer to meet. The wind over the green screen is the perfect example of doing too much. If you can't enjoy Nightwish for the massive amounts of cheese they provide, there's not much left to enjoy.

I'm not sure if you're joking or not. :P I've never liked a single photo of Nightwish, and aside from Angels Fall First I don't like any of their covers either. Nor do I care for their lyrics. The only thing I ever liked about Nightwish was their music. Never cared for anything else. Never seen 'em live, nor will I ever see them unless someone pays me decent money to come with them. So yeah, I'm not a huge fan, I just enjoy some of their albums, with Angels Fall First being my favourite. Best performance Tarja ever did despite being the technically worst.

And there's good cheese and there's bad cheese. Nightwish pictures are bad cheese, and I don't like bad cheese.

I'm being completely serious. I'm past the age where I would even think of taking Nightwish seriously and I enjoy them for the music they serve up. It's exactly the kind of cheese I'm looking for in symphonic gothic pop metal, with just enough edge to be taken semi-seriously and just enough pop to be commercially accessible. It's a very hard thing to balance right despite the result seeming easy, as evidenced by all the bands Nightwish has influenced that took their formula, altered it slightly, and ended up way worse off (example: Within Temptation).

But them trying too hard and being in excess in everything kinda is their thing. They're one of the few bands I can think of off the top of my head that rent out an entire orchestra every time they release an album.

A lot of their photos are absolutely terrible - including this one - so I stopped paying attention to them. They try to look epic but they come off goofy instead. The colors and saturation on their photo shoots can use some work too (generally speaking).

One can never forget the gem that is this photo. I won't spoil what's wrong with it for those that haven't seen it before, but this is what they used as their promotional pictures for Once, which was probably one of the biggest tours they've ever had.

LOL DID THEY JUST PASTE TARJA IN THERE BECAUSE PART OF MARCO'S FOOT IS MISSING.

Yes, that's exactly what they did. I expected no less from our master of photoshop.

To be honest, I don't think Nightwish are very cheesy as far as the music goes. There's only a few songs each on Once that I'd catogorize as cheesy. That's mainly Wish I Had an Angel, Nemo and Planet Hell. Dark Passion Play had a few more, but that's as expected considering they got a new vocalist who had a very regular, poppy voice. Need to be said it's a very long time since I heard DPP, but Once is not what I'd personally catogorize as cheesy at all. Songs like Creek Mary's Blood, The Siren, Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum and Last of the Wilds are songs that I just consider well-written, powerful, majestic and cinematic symphonic metal songs free of both good and bad cheese in my ear. So yeah, not what I really consider cheesy.

Also, THAT live performance of Creek Mary's Blood with John Two-Hawks is one of the best live performances ever, despite Tarja and the rest of the band on stage. John Two-Hawks is porno. Shows more emotion and joy during those 10 minutes than the rest of the band ever did combined.

As far as "Nightwishian metal" goes I think probably Epica did it best during their first 3-4 albums or something. Should probably revisist the band some day.

'Tis why I must have thought "gee, this looks familiar" when I first saw the cover. Not fond of the name but I'll wait for the first single before I make up my mind.

Also:

As previously reported, longtime NIGHTWISH drummer Jukka Nevalainen sat out the recording sessions for the group's new CD due to health issues; Kai Hahto (WINTERSUN, SWALLOW THE SUN, TREES OF ETERNITY) has replaced him.

Kai is a beast, so I can't wait to hear the drums on this.

NIGHTWISH recently revealed the famed evolutionary biologist and atheist writer/leader Richard Dawkins will appear as a guest on the band's eighth studio album.

Élan has leaked.

I was VERY disappointed with Anette's departure. at the time I didn't even feel like giving a new vocalist a try.

but somehow this band always manages to keep me interested.

well, I have to admit Élan is goddamn good. I love its folky, easy-to-listen sound.

will have to listen to the whole thing when it's out.

I'm listening Elan rn. It's not bad (it's still better than Storytime anw x'D), but hum....

You know, I follow Floor since 2001 (with Decipher) so I know what she's capable of (+ she's my favorite female vocalist), and it frustrates me a bit to see that her potiential isn't at its maximum on this song. I'm still hoping that Tuomas hasn't fucked up with that on the upcoming album. So, wait and see.

Elan would be good with Anette too tbh.

Élan is believed to be one of the weakest songs on album. meaning vocal-wise too. Floor is said to contribute a very massive range of vocals to the whole thing, so I assume you'll be able to hear your favorite female vocalist as you remember her.

also, just for the sake of it. track lengths:

01. Shudder Before The Beautiful (6:29)

02. Weak Fantasy (5:23)

03. Élan (4:45)

04. Yours Is An Empty Hope (5:34)

05. Our Decades In The Sun (6:37)

06. My Walden (4:38)

07. Endless Forms Most Beautiful (5:07)

08. Edema Ruh (5:15)

09. Alpenglow (4:45)

10. The Eyes Of Sharbat Gula (6:03)

11. The Greatest Show On Earth (24:00)

I don't get this. I can understand people being a bit sceptic before knowing who was gonna be the new vocalist, but as soon as it was revealed to be Floor Jansen I can't understand how people could be disappointed. By far the most talented vocalist of the three, and a vocalist who can pull off songs from both eras better than the previous vocalists themself.
