The hatred towards SCUMS is a tadddd bit exaggerated if you ask me. Even I was guilty of my harsh feelings towards that album before doing an open-minded re-listen recently. Its just hella different compared to the kickass-ness that was Libido, Majestical Parade, and Anima (only albums ive checked out so far). There's many albums in the entirety of VK that deserve the flack they get. SCUMS is def not one of em.

EDIT: Some of the best guitar work is on that album too, i noticed.

He's a monster behind the kit. Far from my favourite of course, but a beast anyway. Tight, fast and technical but not without feeling and groove when needed. Was very impressed with him live too.

this is the problem when people (from japan) do everything they can not to appear as full grown adult men... but more like (female) shoujo manga characters.. even when they do such music no one takes them seriously.

Whaat... You're taking this far too complicated I think. Stop thinking too much into it. His reasons for the things he plays are probably much simpler.

Hm.. it's just a demo right? I mean for the fact that the whole thing is recorded with computer, I can't really tell if your band pulls that off. The vocals are weak, the screams are modded, the band name has a grammar error.. it's like you wanted to pack every jrock/VK cliche there is into this band. I didn't like it, but you're just beginning, right? I'm sure you will improve soon

I'm really sorry dude I was wondering why you liked my comment and then this... (...). Yeah I actually knew where you were getting at with harmony, and I also wrote I agree with you on that. I just set up a poor analogy

DogManX, if I was specifically addressing anything you said, I would have quoted you and answered you directly. Unfortunately, I wasn't. I was speaking in a general sense because the conversation reminded me of the sentiment I addressed above.

BUT, I will answer one specific thing which I think you misinterpreted.

I'm not talking about genres of music, I'm talking about Harmony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmony), and Tonality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonality) as being the same across bands from different regions and genres throughout Popular Music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_music). My point was not  "oh, all these genres are really the same at the end of the day", no, genres are great at categorizing all different musical styles. It was that there is no inherent quality that musically distinguishes "American Metal / Western Metal" from "Japanese Metal" when in terms of their harmony, they are identical. The only thing that you can reliably use to distinguish them, is language.

I wouldn't really call it leftover, but more or less the band playing to the albums style before venturing forth into the new album. (If that makes sense.) Kind of like how Hageshisa has that UROBOROS sound mostly because of how the guitars were tuned at the time of recording the single.

Godammned people. The influence of american punk rock metalcore whatever is not a sole TMOAB-effort. I know most of you fucking love that WtD album for nostalgic reasons or whatever.. but hands down, until there there has never been such an american (...)-rock sounding album. They just set more genre-specific focus with TMOAB.

Give me any american-inspired song from TMOAB, and I will tell you The Final trumps it. Actually, I think that's also why this song is so popular. It's so easy to digest for people with radio rock AND/OR jrock background. In the way how fucking uninspired it really is, it is sort of a masterpiece/marketing genius.

    But that's of course speculation.

EDIT man I love Vulgar. Almost entirely.

Luckily Dir en grey fans are not dominated by weeaboos who are obsessed with emoticons and -chan endings. Usually those fangirls who go all the KAWAIIII way are not so kawaii in real life and approx. weigh about 200 kg. But that's of course speculation. Also when you have to grow up with RT... conspiracy theories are your daily news basically.

Uroboros indeed a masterpiece. And this is totally not a distraction move!

Because your comments are scattered in thought and largely disconnected, I tried to boil down what you said into one line (let me know if it's a misrepresentation so I may edit it in the future):

It appears the crux of your argument relies on the assumption: visual aesthetic = success. Basically saying: as Dir en grey revert back to greater visual presentation, that means they're getting "big" again...or something. Again, I'm assuming the argument with what you've given, so I apologize if this is at all inaccurate.

There's just one problem: it doesn't take into account the real issue of marketing. If I were hard pressed to find a solution, it wouldn't have anything to do with visuals or the lackthereof in the first place because in the grand scheme of things, that doesn't matter. So, if "visuals" aren't the reason for this, what is? Simply put: marketing the product.

At the end of the day these bands are products that are sold to consumers. "Dir en grey", for all intents and purposes, is a brand. It is literally no different than marketing a brand of beer on television; but the issue lies in the fact "Dir en grey" , the brand, doesn't receive the proper marketing to get that product out there. The issue isn't "Kyo-sama doesn't wear the cute kabuki make-up, therefore their sales will drop". No, it doesn't quite work like that. It's a lack of effort in building the fanbase through support tours, and a lack of marketing to get word out about North American tours. Dating back to 2008 (post-Deftones tour), Dir en grey has done ONE support tour: with "Apocalyptica" of all people. Even then, that was a co-headline tour, not as a support act. What bands have Dir en grey toured with since then? A bunch of nobodies. Some french groove metal band recently, and some band named "Preschool Teaparty Massacre", or some shit.

Why is this important? Because bands in the US, and across the rest of the world in Pop Music, largely work on support tours to gain new fans, and for some reason Dir en grey either refuses to do this, or no one wants them as a support act. The latter is highly in question, so if I were a betting man, I would go with the former. Going on headlining tours where there's 0 means to build the fanbase, and the lack of money put into North American marketing, is a far more significant factor than "they dress like teh cute womenz now, so they're totally hot right now".

Effectively, Dir en grey has been doing North American tours with the same fans from 2007 with no effort to expand it. Could this be because the band, or whoever acts as their main source of management, don't see it as worth it and would prefer to do a headlining tour for some quick cash and call it a day? That's very possible; but the issue isn't grounded in their aesthetic, it's grounded in their lack of marketing.
