Discovered them not too long ago on Spotify and my jaw physically dropped. I don't think I've ever heard indigenous Australian music, even a didgeridoo ever incorporated in J-music, let alone this masterfully. I implore people to watch their DRIP TOKYO performance because the amount of collective talent presented in that one video is astounding.

KLUE is currently my AOTY so far and GEZAN is really starting to gain popularity actually. And since I have seen almost nothing about GEZAN on MH, I thought it was a good idea to start this topic.

    GEZAN
    2009~

noise rock, alternative rock, neo-psychedelia, post-hardcore, art rock...

Mahito the People | vocals, guitar
    Eagle Taka | guitar
    Carlos Ozaki | bass
    Ishihara Loscal | drums | 2017~

    Shark Yasue | drums | 2009~2016

Formed at Osaka in 2009, GEZAN (下山 at the time) got its start in noise rock at Namba Bears, a famous underground livehouse in the Namba district of Osaka, and notably obtained the approval of the masters of Japanese psychedelia like Acid Mothers Temple. The band's reputation is mainly due to the vehement performances which the members demonstrate on stage. After a first album Katsute Uta to Iwareta Sore in 2012, which tries to synthesize this chaotic scenic energy, the band is offered the opportunity to play at the Fuji Rock on the Rookie A Go-Go stage, dedicated to emerging artists, showing the meteoric rise of the quartet. Around the same time, GEZAN gradually began to shift the center of its activities to Tokyo, until finally settling in the capital.

Gradually, the band changed its tone and composed songs that wanted to be more catchy, approaching somewhat the standards of the dominant music industry. The result, in 2014, was the release of the second album called 凸 -DECO- which turned out to be more consensual. However, the underground identity of GEZAN is not tainted, like with the concert the same year at Shinjuku Loft, a famous underground livehouse in the Kabukichō district of Tokyo, where the band shares the poster with Jun Togawa, iconic singer of 1980s and major figure of the Japanese avant-garde.

The release in 2016 of the third album NEVER END ROLL demonstrates that GEZAN is now akin to the punk scene and finds uniqueness through the easily recognizable voice of Mahito the People. Although the album is a little less popular with fans, songs like wasted youth or blue hour have become emblematic songs of the band.

After the release of a single Absolutely Imagination in 2017, GEZAN marks a new musical change, remembering its first album, with the release in October 2018 of Silence Will Speak. Besides the fact that this fourth album is recorded by the famous Steve Albini, Silence Will Speak maintains a strong relationship with the United States. The documentary Documentary of GEZAN: Tribe Called Discord released in June 2019 traces this link by following the members of GEZAN during their American tour where the band confronts the societal reality of the country through meetings with the differents people and classes living in the country. The result is therefore an album showing new maturity, moving away from punk and turning to more visceral sounds, while mixing various musical genres as evidenced by the songs NO GOD or BODY ODD.

This musical development is a first step leading to the release in January 2020 of the group's latest album KLUE. True mix between rock, punk, dub or even psychedelia, this fifth album mixes heavy riffs with hypnotic loops, tribal rhythms and guttural songs. Like the "We can’t stand, we need a change" lyrics concluding the song Tokyo shows, this fifth album by GEZAN is also characterized by the political scope of its lyrics. As all the lyrics of the album available in English on Bandcamp shows, GEZAN delivers a message of rebellion to its listeners, a notable fact in a overall depoliticized country.

In addition to his own career, GEZAN has also established itself as a major player on the underground scene through the creation of Jusangatsu Records, an independent label. Although the label is known for the production of the albums of NUUAM (project between Mahito the People and Ichiko Aoba) or those of the solo career of Mahito the People, the label has also produced bands like 5000, the hatch and VOGOS. Nevertheless, Jusangatsu Records' main feat for the underground scene remains the creation of Zenkankakusai in 2014, a do it yourself music festival where access to concerts and food is free. Held on two dates each year, the festival has become one of the major musical events bringing together the entire Japanese independent scene and demonstrates that a fringe of the music industry of the archipelago doesn't wish to follow the paths marked out by the majors and other mainstream institutions.

colorful人生 got a reaction from avaritonista in [Confirmed] Is Mikoto-sama (ZIGZAG) actually Daishi Uehara (WANDS)?
As the person who belatedly brought this to the foreign limelight and who as also spent a ridiculous amount of time listening to Ray C, Otoiroha, and ジグザグ, I'll see if I can clarify some of your points.

That being said, I'll prepend my further statements w/ additional fan-research done here:
    https://www.kokusai-singlemama.com/columns/wands-uehara1/
    https://sebunoda-goodjob.com/2020/01/04/wandsの上原大史は命様なの!?ていうか、ジグザグ/

I find them pretty much identical if you put them side by side with Otoiroha pics. The distance from the chin to the lower-lip, jawline, etc. He's put on a little more weight (healthy btw) since Otoiroha (which is why he might appear differently.) I had a good comparison image in my initial status write-up, but it appears to be broken right now. If you want something more definitive, his left lateral incisor tooth is identical (and the rest of his teeth.):
*Also jawline tape is also a possibility. Japanese makeup is a hell of a thing.
He uses a different vocal inflection with WANDS, which is a bit "safer" and more appropriate since it requires him to be more technically accurate. His highs, however, are a dead giveaway.

He's not actually "frustrated" but more aloof (in typical Japanese fashion) of the subject. I draw parallels with mafumafu (まふまふ) in my status update because they have similar scenarios. They're both guitarists, constantly conceal part of their face, in extremely popular bands/groups, and for mafumafu's case, he's the vocalist of "神様、僕は気づいてしまった" where all the members of the group are in full costume/masks. They want that separation, and in Mikoto's case, between his indie and WANDS presence, the latter of which is pretty much being a j-idol.

Trying to piece together what I wrote before, it is rumored in the time between Otoiroha and Zigzag that he was scouted by Daikō Nagato (former Being Group CEO and musician) for his indies-era voice. He's credited on a ZARD tribute album and participated in some music festival in 2018 prior to being inducted into WANDS (also from Being Group.)

Also attesting to this, since I've posted a large chunk of Zig Zag's earlier live-limited discography on YT, I'm able to view analytics and comments... There was an absolute flurry of viewership + comments in February indirectly mentioning WANDS which confused tf outta me. Comments ranging from older women who were 90's gya having rekindled interest in vk to how good his vocals are in Zig Zag. Other videos have comments stating how handsome he is and how he should stick with WANDS, etc.

In summation, they're absolutely the same person and he's just creating separation between his two careers.

Two at the moment, working on the third. I'm getting close to 150 GB of footage total.

Once I get the third link up, I'll start adding the individual links in the dropdown lists.

I've grabbed a few off these channels:
    Victor Entertainment: https://www.youtube.com/user/VictorMusicChannel
    Lantis: https://www.youtube.com/user/lantis

Avex has uploaded a metric ton of lives that'll be available until the end of the month: https://www.youtube.com/user/avexnetwork/videos

I'll be working on downloading those when I'm done w/ the other stuff.

    -

Also, putting search terms like "audience delivery", "no-audience delivery", "studio live", etc. (obv. in Japanese) will reveal a ton of livestream content on YouTube. I've had to pick & choose quite a bit, so I might miss on some people's favorites. If anyone has like a single video, feel free to shoot me a PM, but it would also be helpful if we could get a few more people to join in on the downloading.

For YouTube, I'm using youtube-dl (https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl). If anyone is uncomfortable with cli  for some reason, there is youtube-dlg (https://mrs0m30n3.github.io/youtube-dl-gui/) it's severely outdated, though. You could also use online downloaders, one of which is just prepending the url's "youtube.com" with "ss" to make "ssyoutube.com".

Minyami for Nico Lives (https://github.com/Last-Order/Minyami). You need to install Git for Windows and Node.js (LTS is fine) before attempting the instructions.

Certain Nico Lives that are under channel paywall, but not premium paywall usu. won't have added DRM/HLS encryption which segments the video. You can use something like HLS Downloader: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hls-downloader/apomkbibleomoihlhhdbeghnfioffbej?hl=en. Keep in mind you should set the video to the highest quality stream (usu 3MB) and then select the lowest (like scroll down to the bottom, lowest) option in the sniffer section.

I use Line Live Downloader (https://github.com/zyzsdy/linelive-downloader/releases) which is ultra straightforward. Download the latest release and launch the program. It's pretty straightforward/easy.

VK downloading can be accomplished through https://addoncrop.com/vk-video-and-music-downloader/. You need a vk account, but it's pretty painless. I don't plan on using my acc. for anything.

Finally, Twitcasting videos can be acquired via VLC using the "Network Stream" feature.
