"We've all indulged in the bulge of those no-no's No, you ain't solo, there's even lower levels you can go Take sun people, put 'em in a land of snow" Still one of the hardest verses by 3 stacks. And just an overall classic.

In my experience, it's usually the people who think they're "good" that are often the most fucked up. But here's a protip: we're all fucked up. So go easy on YOHIO's bitch-ass

  5. As the title says, what are your favorites? Off the top of my head, here are 3 of my favorites: "Television City" Originally by LOSTAGE (2006) - This was the first song that got me into LOSTAGE, and to a larger extent, one of the first songs to get me into the Japanese indie scene as a whole. It was songs like this that began to change my perspective of "indie-rock", which at the time I assumed was full of dull "salaryman-core" . The guitar riffs, the bassline, and the overall energy have kept this a favorite of mine to this day. covered by 8otto (2009) -as a band, I enjoy LOSTAGE wayyyyy more, but when it comes to this particular song, I can't decide who played it better. 8otto absolutely killed this. They replaced the original, high-energy of the song with a thick, funky groove, and Masaki's deadpan vocals almost gives the song a kind of sinister overtone. I fuckin' love it. "delayed brain" Originally by NUMBER GIRL (2002) -Despite NUMBER GIRL being J-indie pioneers (and legends), I only got around to properly listening to them a few years ago. This one was an instant favorite for me tho. The slow-burning funk, Mukai's trademark delivery that's more spoken-word than it is singing, that looping guitar riff, and the hazy tones in the background definitely set this one apart. covered by Natsuko Miyamoto (of MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS) (2017) -Doing basic acoustic covers is pretty typical, but Natsukon did a pretty wonderful job here. It's a simple, folksy rendition, but her emotive vocals do a great job of fleshing out the areas where Mukai couldn't go in the original. "5716" Originally by Clammbon (2003) -I actually heard downy's cover of this first, so admittedly, I don't have much of a history with this song, but it's pretty great nonetheless. It's a somber piano-pop song, with some cool, IDM-like electronics going on. Definitely one of the more emotional songs I've heard from Clammbon in general. covered by downy (2014) -I think it's safe to say that downy took this song and completely made it their own, as it barely resembles the original at all. It maintains a little bit of the melancholy of the original, but even that shifts to a lighter, more hopeful feeling during the chorus. So yeah, it may not sound anything like the original, but it's still a brilliant track on its own, and a testament to downy's enduring creativity. --------------------------------------- What are some of your favorite Japanese covers of other Japanese bands?

Diggin it! The production on this one is a little too raw and lo-fi for me tho.
  8. Yooooo, brotha jinsei. Are you familiar with beehype? I've been slowly making my way through their 2018 EOTY list and I always discover some cool stuff through them! I figured a fellow music-adventurer like yourself might find it resourceful (if you're not already familiar with it)! :D

Hoooooly shit, this is a fantastic resource... Especially compared to sites like "Every Noise at Once", which in many cases I find inaccurate or out-of date, they have a whole team of writers w/ actually relevant selection. Goes back to 2014, too!

Def. going to use this in conjunction w/ last.fm & Spotify. Thanks a bunch, Cat!

Hughley's analysis is on point. Imo feeble minds are too easily goaded into recreational outrage, but not only that - It's much easier to condemn others than it is to practice genuine empathy and understanding, as in doing so, you have to wrestle with the fact of your own flawed and fucked up human nature as well.

@Seimeisen - I think we may be opposites - I kinda really like this one! I like the feel of the artwork. Although it has a very "western indie" feel to it, if that makes any sense. With the two tracks they've released so far, it's difficult to tell what overall direction they're going for on this album. I'm pretty excited for it!

^ I honestly don't remember "Gabriel on the Gallows" or much of Division at all. That Reol song is dupe btw. I might get shot for this, but her voice reminds me of Koda Kumi, but more high pitched....Reol is much better tho. "Hope" by Develop One's Faculties is good too. I forgot all about that song as well! 01. LOSTAGE - RED 02. 澤野弘之 - MAD-NUG 03. 青葉市子 - 路標 04. SLEEP WALKER - AFLOAT feat.Yukimi Nagano 05. downy - 雨の犬 06. Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band - Best Bet 07. cinema staff - 革命の翌日 08. Orcaorca - Paradise 09. Little Dragon - Sway Daisy 10. アルカラ -半径30cmの中を知らない hmm...these are all good songs. That's one of my all-time favorite downy songs, too, but based on how I'm feeling atm, I gotta rock with LOSTAGE.

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I legit thought about this cover too!!! Something about it just really captures that raw essence of early TBH material. either that, or maybe I'm just nostalgic
