I'll get "divine error" next month if no one else gets it but even then it will be like 2-3 weeks before it arrives. But if no one else does I guess I'll have to fork out the cash. Hopefully someone is more generous before then though.

For some Japanese takes on the genre:
Coaltar of the Deepers' Yukari Telepath or No Thank You (COTD are not really the 'standard' gaze band tbh, there's elements of death metal, new wave, and other stuff there as well from time to time)
My Dead Girlfriend's material is stellar overall
    Kinoko Teikoku's Uzu ni Naru
    cruyff in the bedroom
    Tokyo Shoegazer
    Luminous Orange

    Mixing Japanese and Western:
    Asobi Seksu

Other bands worth checking out (maybe): Curve (sometimes have sort of an 'industrial' twist on things) The Depreciation Guild (shoegaze/dreampop + chiptune), The Angelic Process (shoegaze + .. drone metal i guess? basically sounds like I imagine drowning in a sand pit feels like) Catherine Wheel and Swervedriver (both alt. rock influenced shoegaze, so it's sort of more fastpaced than the usual)

Check out Kaki King I'm a huge fan of hers, shes amazing and that last album "Neck is the Bridge to the Body" is amazing but only 50% complete if you haven't seen it preformed live with all the visuals.

Everything Tokage's recommending is solid stuff.

Ringo Deathstarr is a really fun 'nu-gaze' band, if you're looking for a more modern take on the genre too. Fleeting Joys is also really killer for a post-2010 shoegaze act.

    +1 on everything tokage says;
shoegaze was originally affiliated with a particular regional scene, but its definitely more of a genre than say, visual kei. the more you listen to shoegaze, the greater of a feel you get for the sound, and the easier it is to say x is shoegaze or y isn't shoegaze. that said, shoegaze fans in general don't entirely care about whats shoegaze and whats not, LOL.

Also listen to My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Slowdive's Souvlaki, Ride's Nowhere and The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy if you want to get an impression of the scene, they're basically the biggest names you'll find out there.

Also check out A Place To Bury Strangers' album Exploding Head just because it's fucking awesome lol

You should give the documentary "Beautiful Noise" a try, it actually details the rise and ''fall'' of the biggest acts in the 'gaze scene. It's not entirely perfect for people who don't know what the fuck the scene is about, but you'll at least get an idea of the scene to some extent.

They're basically most likely either gazing at their shoes because a) they're kinda awkward in some sense or b ) they need to deal w/ their effect pedals

"gazing at your shoes" is the most popular theory of how shoegaze came to be.
Something about the setlists being taped on the ground, so it looks like they're looking at their feet.
Also because sometimes you tend to focus on one thing when you play an instrument, as it helps concentration.

    Is Shoegaze a genre?
No more than Grunge was in the nineties, or Indie music of today imo.
More like "an era" of music. Elements of that era that are still used today.

I read a book on it lol hold on. It was a long time ago (shoegaze has been around longer than you think).

    Here's the book I read.
I tried to find the chapter that spoke about shoegaze, so feel free to read that.

The genre is named after how the bands stared at their shoes, but shoegaze is basically a genre based around being loud with long, droning riffs, waves of distortion, loads of feedback, delay, and what not. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of effects pedals and stuff. Often resulting in a massive wall of sound where the guitars drowns most of the other instruments a lot of the time. And the overall atmosphere is often very dreamy.

Just listen to My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless" on repeat and you'll get it.
