there's no difference now, and japan has always been a bit different with the definitions; but in the vinyl days, a single would be 1/2 tracks (side A+B), or up to 3 tracks on a 7" vinyl; EP would be 3-4 songs on a slightly larger vinyl disk, and mini album is 5-6 tracks, all progressively going up in price. with CDs, same idea is p much used as a marketing gimmick because there's no difference in manufacturing costs, etc, inherent to vinyls. with VK we went from pierrot releasing 4-5 track singles like nbd to this 2004 dir en grey parody of a ~maxi single~
