Didn't Kyo admit in some interview that was quoted here that he for a long time didn't even listen to the songs he was going to remake? And just performed from memory or something. 

No, but he did say in an interview that he never chooses which songs are going to be remade.

So maybe he doesn't listen to the original first but I doubt it. I think they were just trying to separate themselves from their 1997-2001 era for the longest time and since Arche I think they're just finally embracing it.
