RANUNCULUS video. Wow.
A freak show, circus, a spooky spectacle, dark fairytale.

Envelion reacted to blacktooth in Dir en grey
When I was first getting into Dir en grey (and Mucc too for that matter), something that really appealed to me was that they don't stick to a single or genre in any of their works. Sure, each album tends to have its own tone but the tracks themselves are by no means homogenized.
If you're trying to tag and organize your music library, sure it sucks. But I'd rather not be able to categorize them so easily.

definitely hoping the weird cover art means they're trying something kinda different on this album
I liked the two singles just fine but they weren't exactly...... inspired

It took me a while to think of what it reminded me of, but I realized today that I also noticed the Tool vibe.
The album cover is definitely upsetting. Much like the pink monkey man, I'm not looking forward to it coming up on my phone's shuffle.
My girlfriend calls the new art "the pineapple man" tho, so that makes him a little more hilarious than scary.

Also, I guess that Renunculus music clip was a public event. They're not putting it online just yet? Seems like they're not doing much hype for this new album. It's a month away. 😫

It's actually post-progressive avant-garde experimental metal with death metal and j-rock influences.

See, that's the thing I was hinting at. I think that nobody really cares THAT someone does(n't) like it. That's not interesting, you can't really talk about that (except for that little passive aggressive "DEG SUCKS" circlejerk on every page of this thread). It's far more interesting to talk about WHY someone does(n't) like it.
I don't know how much thought or effort went into this image but it's full of symbols either way. And these symbols can be read and since they are thematically/semantically pretty consistent, they can be combined into a narrative or message. If that message is exactly what the dude(s) who made it had in mind doesn't really matter, does it? Things mean different things to different people. That's kinda the beauty of art, right?

I gotta say I love it and it’s way better than most of their other covers. Way less generic, totally unexpected. Really inspired I’d say. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like how the alternate version is “guy looks right instead of left”.

To be fair, you have to have a very high I.Q. to understand DIR EN GREY album art.

(Hi there, I've lurked on this board for like, 6 years)
The new clip is really promising! A friend of mine in JP said that this isn't Ranunculus but it sounds like it's going to be a good one too! I get why people hear the Sukekiyo vibe. I heard it when I first woke up and I thought, "Oh, kinda like DeG guitar and vocals from jyunboku, muku de arouga"
It makes sense though. While some people on this board have floated the idea of Sukekiyo being Kyo's main deal and him not caring about DEG, that's just not how artists typically work. Artists make side projects to explore different sounds and grow in their art form. Arche definitely showed that Kyo learned new sounds from his time in Sukekiyo, and I think that will continue as he creates. Same goes for any of the other band's side projects, it will influence who they are as an artist, because they can't really compartmentalize their different sounds, even if they try to. It's all going to bleed together.
But I'm stoked anyway! Gonna be a great album and amazing tour!

I was expecting people to not be so damn negative. This topic is six pages of snarky comments and it's exhausting to read. Dir en grey is not the world's most perfect band, but we could all do with more positivity.
