Pretsy got a reaction from paradoxal in The (most) influential releases in J-music scene
So, the point of this topic is that you'll bring up a few (let's limit it to ~2 RELEASES PER PERSON*) titles that have affected the sound in later generations. AND THIS TIME you don't need to rely on "facts" - unless you are willing to cause shitstorm here: before you post your title, discard the whole "influence fact" mess out of your head - and think how that certain title has influenced IN YOUR OPINION (I am not really looking forward to "opinions are for the weak"-ideology, btw).

I am not really sure whether this kind of idea has been cultivated much earlier here (as in topics with same ideas), but it's still interesting to see that what kind of titles pop up here.

You can format your posts your own way, BUT MAKE SURE it includes following details:

    1) artist title - album title (obviously)
    2) album cover
    3) release date (or release year)
    4) Explanation to your choice (Why? How?)
    5) Youtube link for certain song off the album, if possible (as a showcase/supporting element for your explanation, you can add a small description if you wish)

And definite rule of thumb here is of course: NO SPAM, NO SHITSTORM
*yup, I am quite harsh here.

    Thank you.

As a "firestarter", I will do this first:

AND THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO VK ONLY, GO AHEAD AND POST NON-VK TITLES TOO (that's actually something I'd appreciate too).

Kuroyume tribute album FUCK THE BORDER LINE -RETAKE-
    (much better sequel)

    1. BUCK-TICK feat. Morrie - Kaitou Jikken (解凍実験)
    - Not a bad idea for "senpais" to cover their "kouhais'" songs at all! The song is very post-punk-ish (in a way), and thanks to its manic Kiyoharu 3-vocal tracks, I can see Imai , Sakurai  and Morrie pulling this out well.

    2. the GazettE - Drug People
    - At least much better song choice than "C.Y. HEAD". Imagine if this were "Agony part. 2".

    3. Tommy Heavenly6 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY
    - The song is very cheery, despite quite sad-toned lyrics, and is easy for Tomoko to do.

    4. Mao (SID) feat. SOIL&"PIMP"SESSIONS - HELLO, CP ISOLATION
    -  Every good tribute album needs some wtf-ery, hey!

    5. Shiina Ringo x Seiji Kameda ( or Tokyo Jihen, short-lived reunion or w/e) - Jounetsu no Kage (情熱の影)
    - This calm, funky piece needs definitely Shiina's dramatic vocals in it, and Kameda to convey Hitoki's "Another One Bites the Dust"-influenced bassline. OR it might become a very jazz-heavy masterpiece too!

    6. lynch. - MIND BREAKER
    - It's quite obvious why I chose lynch. for this song - listen to it!

    7. Miyavi - NITE&DAY
    - Considering that Miyavi already "semi-covered" certain Kuroyume songs (with the band itself, lol), I might find this acoustic piece okay for him to do. It's also easy for him to convey that "raw" acoustic sound of the original.

    8. MUCC - Tell
    - I would've chosen more melancholic piece for them but considering Miya's strict "no more negativity"-policy, I had to find a laid-back song for them. Here ya go!

    9. DIR EN GREY - Shihainaru Deathmask (201X ver.) (親愛なるDeathmask)
    - These guys already covered the song back in 1997, but it would've been great to see them remake it - even if it ends up sounding in vein of Kiri to Mayu's 2012 ver. Also, this lets Toshiya and Die shine

    10. D'erlanger - Nakigara wo (亡骸を )
    - Tetsu can do some magic improvisation with that drumline loop and Cipher can make the guitarline sound so "airy". Very fitting for Kyo's vocal range too.

    11. PENICILLIN - DANCE 2 GARNET
    - Chisato riffing those Shintastic solos and Hakuei going back to his old-schooling, why not?

    12. Takanori Nishikawa feat. SEKAI NO OWARI - SEE YOU
    - Great finale for this tribute album (was used quite often as their "last song"), and Takanori makes wonders with this one (along with SNO ofc)

Bonus tracks (ironically, for the sake of cashing in lol):

    13. LIPHLICH - Love Me Do
    - For the sake of adding more Kiyoharu fanboys and WTF song choices

    14. Ling Tosite Sigure - ICE MY LIFE
    - More wtf-ery, more profit! I can see this ending up quite surprising.

    15. L'Arc~en~Ciel - For Dear
    - I can only hope, right? Also, guitar is very Ken-like here. PLUS quite essential song in Kuroyume's repertoire, lol.

    PLASTIC TREE TRIBUTE
    01. Mucc - Melancholic
    02. Shilfee & Tulipcorobockles - Zetsubou No Oka (I remember hearing Full cover this song before during his webstream lives, soooo....)
    03. Coaltar of the Deepers - Cell (I think Narasaki already contributed to this song)
    04. cali≠gari - consent. (Ishii's goatbed influences would fit this song hella well)
    05. the god and death stars - Wareta mado
    06. LIPHLICH - Tremolo (They'd probably totally change it into something unique)
    07. Moran - Utsusemi
    08. DOPPEL - Sink
    09. DIMMDIVISION - 13th friday
    10. Hollowgram - Kuchuu Buranko

Tokyo Jihen had a few interesting and highly entertaining PVs. The 女の子は誰でも one is inspired by old musicals. The ハンサム過ぎて PV looks like a 1950s/1960s black and white movie. The 今夜はから騒ぎ PV reminds you of China in the early 20th century. All of them have gorgeous and well-designed costumes and settings.

    Women:

Ringo Shiina - I adore her radical, but still mature changes, and admit already guys: she's such a cutie (Cat's "the milf of j-rock" is not an overstatement at all!)
Nocchi from Perfume - I don't personally get those who call her "the most un-feminine one", considering that she has some sort of "strong woman image" imho. Guess I am into tomboy-ish ones? Who knows.
Utada Hikaru - for the same reasons as Shiina tbqh, unf.

Men (I just look up to them - not gonna go on "over-obsessive, hypersexual and rabid fangirl" mode, yuck):

Toshiya (DEG) - obviously the best-looking (and the most tasteful style-wise) member in DEG- even nowadays, heh.
Hyde - even if he has that of "wasted"-like appearance, he still managed to save his "almost androgynous" looks back from the past.
Byou (Screw) - okay, this guy can't even sing. But hey, at least he's doing well in being "more-than-decent" looking both with makeup and without makeup (not that many post-millennium vksters have a chance to appear in various fashion-related events/magazines more than once, hey)

J would have been in my list too, only if it wasn't for his apparent, sweaty "hyuk-hyuk"-ness back in the 90s.
Oh, and I adored Ayu's/Kuu's looks back in the day but eww what did happen to them now tho...

Pretsy reacted to Zeus in The history behind visual kei
I answered this question a while ago. It's neither, although it leans closer to being a scene. It may have started out as a genre at one point but it's long since surpassed those boundaries. It cannot be a genre because not every visual kei band plays the same type of music. For any genre you name, someone else can find a band that considers themselves visual kei that don't play that genre. Visual kei is simply music with a focus on visuals (hence visual style). Visual kei can't be pigeonholed into a scene or a genre without losing some of the picture.
And in case you missed my answer from before:

Now the history behind visual kei is something else altogether. I don't think there is one person on this forum with a vast knowledge of the history of visual kei because even by the 90s much of that was lost. If we come together as a forum we may be able to piece enough together.

Yes, the bands you mentioned have had their own influence in earlier vk music, but when we take the influences most old vkei artists cited in their interviews into account - Bauhaus and Japan (band) are more often mentioned than say, The Cure or Duran Duran (and much more influencing that way)

For example: Sylvian has influenced many old vk singers (Morrie, Kiyoharu, Atsushi, Hyde...even Kyo himself) and come to think of this tho, the vibe of this song is somewhat similar to Kuroyume's pop song "Kuchizuke" - you could call him, say, "the father of typical vk vocals"

you can hear this kind of vocal/instrumental work (listen to those chords) in many, many post-punk-y vk songs...also: the bass.

Back to the topic tho, bands that remind me of vk as I knew it and loved it would be above - I mentioned reasons above.
