I think I'm one of the few people to actually say this is a good thing. Not specifically for the reason they say it is, but have you ever stood in a pit with people dancing and moshing around while a whole bunch of people are trying to film things and take pictures? You know how many times they look at you like you've murdered someone just because "oh no, my picture got ruined thanks to you". Then when they drop their phones and the screens crack, it's also your fault because you bumped into them. First few rows or balcony places are totally something else but don't take pics when you're in the middle of a moving crowd :/ (it's also annoying when other people who aren't filming are trying to look at what's happening on stage. You just get arms flinging around trying to take the perfect shot of their idols)

I'm also not really sure on what's so fun about watching a full gig through your phone/camera's screen while the people are playing right in front of you.

I have such a weak spot for V6. I'm not ashamed of liking songs like "Darling" and "Honey Beat" because they're obviously meant to be fun and silly (and they're absurdly catchy), but songs like this and Coming Century's "Rock The House" can get a little hard to justify to myself sometimes...

Malice Mizer is overrated and boring. Moi Dix Mois is better. I get that Malice was a HUGE influence on VK and lauched Gackt’s career… but they bore me to death.
People moaning over MM’s disbandment and Hide’s death, when they’ve been listening to VK since 2004, are soooo stupid. You didn’t live it. Quit crying over a band you didn’t even follow while they were active.

Everything The GazettE released before Nil (or was Dim first) is crappy. Even half of Nil and Dim are crappy. Their mini albums are terrible, Ruki couldn’t sing and more than songs it was a jumble of sensless noise. I have gotten actual headaches listening to their earlier stuff and not even Deathgaze and Nocturnal Bloodlust combined have made my head hurt yet with their heavyness.
I’m judging quality solely on sound, not even going to touch lyrics or looks because I simply not care about a band looking edgy but sounding crappy. The new GazettE sounds way better, at least to my ears.

People who whine about VK being expensive and being “too poor” to buy a CD but spend a shitload of money on expensive VK-like clothing are cringe-worthy. “Yass, The GazettE is my favorite band in the world. I mean, I LOVE them. I WORSHIP them. I’d rape Ruki and if they disband I’ll suicide. What? Buy a CD? Nooo I download everything, I’m too poor” Says the fangirl who is wearing a $150 Sexpot Revenge shirt.
In my country (Chile, that long noodle in the South American map) there actually is a VK “scene”, for lack of a better English word in my mind, outside of the internet. There’s places for VK fans to hangout, you can even go to Blondie club and “dance” (headbang) to VK one or two nights a month. I’ve seen a shitload of fans who claim to be “the number one fan” of band x or y, wear expensive clothing, have money to get drunk once a week and smoke pot more often than not, yet are too poor to even consider buying their favorite album from the band they claim to worship so much. Are they on the scene because they enjoy the music or just to become popular for wearing Black Moral?

I don’t like Dir En Grey. I never liked Kyo’s singing. I’ve heard some of their albums twice in an attempt of giving them another shot… there’s no use.
I like Miyavi as a person waaay more than his music. XD I love what he does to bring Japanese rock to a more western audience, how he manages his personal life with his work, I follow him on social media and his daughters are the cutest thing out there. I just don’t listen to him

Someone mentioned types of voice and there was some sort of debate… I won’t get into compositions, but many bands sound similar because the vocalists have the same type of voice. When I first heard ViViD they sounded exactly like Alice Nine to me, same with the Lotus. Listening to more of their discography one comes to realize that they have indeed different sounds, but their vocalists do have the same type of generic voice you hear in so many other VK bands… Singers like Asagi, Juka and Sono do stand out because they have different voices from the average Japanese male. Another unpopular opinion: Kamijo’s voice in Lareine sounded like crap. And I’ve heard that in Versailles he got it… what’s the music equivalent of photoshop? Thing is, he doesn’t sound that great to me as he does for everyone else, though he does make good music XD

And I’ll rant a bit now.
Some people who claim everywhere they love a band but actually only like specific releases also get on my nerves. This one is a personal one. The Vice-president of the (unnoficial) D fanclub in Chile goes around spreading her undying love for Asagi, fangirling, running a fanpage and nagging me to translate every single interview and ameba post for her… and every release I ask her if she wants to buy the new CD with me and share shipping expenses and every single time she refuses and goes on and on about D’s musical quality decline (something I’ll not get into now) and how nothing will ever be at Tafel Anatomie’s level… and everybody on the community wonders why on earth she is going out of her way to keep a community active for a band she no longer likes instead of letting fans who actually are into the band’s current work step in for her. I know there are other people like that and I wonder if they are still on it because x bandmember is hot af or because they enjoy having a “position of power” over the rest of the fans.

ATTENTION: THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR BUTTHURT WEEABOOS. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS. AND IF YOU ARE BUTTHURT AT ANYTIME, I WILL LAUGH.

I hate X Japan solely because they're a band that has received soo much adoration from people because of Hide's love for sexual asphyxiation. They sounded like every other metal band in the 80's, and had nothing to offer. Now, they're back and trying to get successful in the states. And why are they doing this? Well according to Yoshiki:
    "Hide would have wanted this"
    lol. gtfo.

I really dislike LIPHLICH. I just can't get a grasp of their music, it doesn't stick, it doesn't grow any sort of remembrance with which I can recognize the music. Also, I think a lot of people just like this band for Wataru — I actually find his look to be perverse most of the time and quite repelling.

Being a bit brave and coming back here with a different opinion (and having really wanted to catch up with the other new posts here).
I remember reading possibly on here or on last.fm about unknown VK bands, the indie ones, which only have released a couple of tracks and even disbanded. I get told a lot that there's always a reason a band is popular, and that I agree on of course. What I don't agree with is these small indie bands being called insignificant or bad. They should all be given a chance and since they're just starting out, they haven't even shown what they're all made of. Of course I'm guessing why most wouldn't bother with these little groups is because they probably all sound/look the same. But to me, (another unpopular opinion maybe?), the majority of bands which are major do not sound as inspiring and individual as these smaller groups. I really can't say I'm absolutely certain of this one to be honest, since I don't listen to a load of indie ones (and I'm like 99% wrong all the time), I feel like I'm letting out some steam or ranting after reading some negative responses to small bands. I mean, they were just starting out, every band becomes better over time. (ANOTHER unpopular opinion? xD) This is totally not aimed at anyone by the way, even if you disagree.

Oh yeah, I just remembered another one after looking through the thread again. And this one I'm not too worried or scared about saying because I totally stand by this and maybe it's not that unpopular. About when and how a band changes their style/music direction, I think that's always a good thing. Even if it's executed badly. This is because I think the band are showing that they're really trying to do their best, trying different styles, trying to be individual and out there. It's a breath of fresh air and also could even bring in more fans with a different style, and make comparing their old and new work interesting. To me, it's got a lot of pluses even if they're not as good as before. I'm sure everyone who's still reading have a couple of bands in mind about this one. xD

In all fairness though, most vk bands drop the vk image long before just getting too old. Actually most vk bands disband before they get to the point of dropping vk imagery, lol. I can fully understand though that after a few years of needing more time to prepare your makeup for a concert than actually spending time on stage, you want to tone down your visuals. And, since being in a vk band typically doesn't pay your bills, some people may just drop the pink hair in favor of getting a decent job. XD

That's the case with almost all genres, I would say. For every good band in each given genre, there are 10 mediocre bands that only have 2 or 3 good songs, and 20 more bands that are just plain bad.

Also, and this may be a bit of an unpopular opinion, I think that originality is overrated. There isn't really that much in music that hasn't been done before. You can mix things up, change a bit here and there, but in essence there is very little stuff that is truly original (and much of that is just plain weird in their attempts to create something new).

But I don't think music always has to be original. There is a good amount of bands I enjoy that are completely unoriginal - but they just do it damn well. And sometimes that's just enough.

Everything that Arithmetica said is pretty much what I was trying to convey. I'm not trying to be elitist or say anyone that purchases cds is better than other fans, I'm just saying it is still the only way to support when you can't go see live bands and saying that it doesn't support the musicians directly is bullshit. Like Arithmetica said, even if the label eats the profits it's still part of the music industry I enjoy. Especially when the bands from America just can't pull off the visual styles as well as the Japanese bands do. (Look at those tacky cookie cutter paste emo/scene bands like Black Gay Brides and Semen on the Disco Floor.) Sharing shit is fine and dandy and that's how I got into this to begin with but I still wish more fans made an effort to at least buy a release every once in a while is all I'm saying. Hell I buy MP3 albums of bands I don't even enjoy that much just so there is more support in the foreign digital market as well, so hopefully more stuff gets added in the future. Don't understand how it's elitist to want and like spending money on VK. This morning I even pre-ordered The GazettE's new single off Amazon even though I doubt I'll appreciate it after those lackluster previews of yawning.

Exactly, so if I'm the only white person to bother buying something from some trashy no name indie band. I shouldn't talk about it because someone might get upset. Fuck those people and their butthurt. I know there's a difference between flaunting but I don't ever recall seeing anything like that on MH.

For the most part the only nasty responses I've received from people where on Last.fm and at one point good old Livejournal. MH most people aren't that bad and I'm fine with trading.

Basically my stance on downloading is, I do download but almost rarely these days but I still grab something here and there. I wouldn't even be a fan of the music I like today if it wasn't for downloading. However I am mature enough to know that music isn't free and I should do my part as a fan to support not just the artist but the industry as a whole. Sure label eats up a lot of the profit but that profit is usually then turn around into covering studio time, touring costs and so forth. If VK bands came to my city I would do what I do now with metal bands and just wait until they come through on a tour and buy their release then when they'll get the most back from my purchase, but since I can't do that with VK bands. At least my support helps keep the label, producers, distributors afloat so that they can sign and produce more artist.

With that said, my second stance on downloading is if it's a super duper poor man indies band, I don't feel comfortable sharing the material since it'll effect them the most as oppose to some major band or even successful indies artist like something from PS Company or even formerly UCP. Someone else will post that stuff anyway, so I don't bother sharing from those artists.

I prefer sharing music from inactive bands anyway, especially lesser known acts since their stuff is mostly long forgotten.

Anyway, I'm posting from the most annoying keyboard ever so if Im not clear on something, how about you try typing on this piece of shit tablet keyboard.

I know purchasing music doesn't make me more or less of a fan. And for fans that don't/are unable to purchase music are no less or more of a fan either. I apologize for not expanding or articulating my thought process better. I see it has been misunderstood due to my own fault and no one else's.

I used to download illegally. Without it I wouldn't have known about visual kei. Without Internet most of us fans wouldn't know about visual kei and without sharing music or music videos on youtube etc. I wouldn't have discovered the bands I've come to love. I know that... I'm not dumb.

I know that a lot of artists (if not most) make their money from lives as opposed to CD sales; being that I don't live in Japan, the only way I personally feel I can support my favorite bands is purchasing their music. Yes, it sucks that it is expensive and overpriced and that my "contribution" most likely doesn't help boost their profits. I like to have the CDs for the lyrics, having been studying Japanese for a few years and wanting to improve and understand my favorite songs. And I've also just been the type of person that prefers physical copies--the same for me goes for books--and this addiction, one could call it, has developed over the years greatly. Probably unhealthy for my wallet, to be honest.

I appreciate you for pointing out my unwise actions in sharing information on forums (i.e. "I just preordered so-and-so release" etc.) I honestly just get into fangirl mode, because I get excited to listen to new music and so on and want to tell someone. Where I live there are no other fans that I know of. I only interact with fans online. I've realized as much as I may want to fangirl over such things, it is not wise. I don't do it on purpose to cause a ruckus. I am just an idiot. It is my fault for any way I react when I reveal such information and fellow fans would like me to share the music. It is my fault for feeling angry and/or upset towards fellow fans that do not purchase music etc. for whatever reason. Maybe to a certain degree (or a lot) I have subconscious elitism that says, "Well, why don't you buy it instead of begging me to upload it?" And that's something I need to work on.

At least buying a few forever ago is better than never buying any and then bitching about the state of things or when a band disbands. I've been seeing a lot of posts from members where they criticize bands for being money hungry when everyone in any modern society is money hungry. I didn't mean criticize or praise a band artistically, that is everyone's right and of course artistic opinion matters very little since it is very subjective. But when a band has CDs or DVDs or lives that are expensive or the band fails or proclaims their money troubles in the form of conditional disbands with the need of attracting enough fans to a concert so the band can at least break even and someone says "OH HEY THEY R SO GREEDY CAN'T STAND IT," is just ridiculous. We all live off money and we all need it to live and I just get disgusted when people act like its wrong for the musicians to actually need money. I'm sure most of the people here understand that the bands need money to keep going and that in most cases, especially VK, there are a lot more different aspects to being in a band such as  design professionals from artwork to makeup and other production costs. A lot of VK fans on the net are spoiled rotten from all the free tunes, they get bitchy when things aren't shared for free in a timely manner if it is known someone has a release not uploaded yet.  The same people that don't understand why a band would disband for monetary reasons or why a band has to charge so much for their services. Sorry for not making myself more clear~. I just think that if everyone at least bought even just one CD for every so many they download then maybe things would change. A lot of Japanese media was doing well here in the states. Anime and manga and Jrock used to be very popular but it has since dwindled. Some caused by bad decisions on the part of companies bringing the stuff over (like Tokyopop trying to become a multimedia power house that produced music by Courtny Love's daughter and tried to make live action anime movies but ran out of money when they should have just stuck to manga, which is what caused a major leap to pirating manga on manga reader websites) to how Adult Swim and Cartoon Network periodically taking down their anime scheduled programmings due to the high amount of fansubbing and pirating. It's all rather connected. Most of the people here probably came across japanese music from anime. I'm not sure how well Adult Swim's current reanimation of Toonami is doing ratings wise but that market directly affects the music one as well in terms of exposure and other factors and since everyone is just downloading everything all the numbers aren't really matching. Pirating is just a problem in general is all I'm saying and it's causing little ripples in the ocean of content that are causing bigger problems for the intellectually created content. Yeah I've downloaded some stuff for free but I buy things and support with cash munny when I can but there are some people that don't even make that much of an effort and just go tra-la-la-la-ing down this path that causes the creative individual to wonder if they will be able to afford cheese sandwiches to live off of if people just keep stealing things for free. Yes I understand that most of the members here are drawn by that elusive downloads section and its all fine and dandy that that stuff is available right at your fingertips but it's the same essentially as robbing a CD shop. Yes there are some good things from sharing this stuff for free with everyone and it creates more exposure but at the same time how is there going to be any support at all? How are these bands going to keep going? It's hard for the little bands just starting out to last and the whole state of VK right now isn't doing that well. (Bands disbanding left and right, magazines ending publication, collapse of management companies.) And then people whine about that stuff and don't realize is that it's because the pirating fans are causing there to be no money in it on a scale that it should be compared to how often these things are downloaded. But this is the same for all bands worldwide and all creative content and I don't believe that my stance is wrong at all Dispo. Creative content is a service like anything else and we live in a world that runs on money, a world where everyone HAS to be greedy in at least one small way. And I'm in no way saying that people do creative things JUST for money. I'm saying that if someone has done something creative and it's being sold that it should be paid for more than it's stolen.

UNPOPULAR OPINION NUMERO ICHI: I don't think people that don't buy any VK albums should be allowed to criticize or complain about band qualities when they aren't doing anything to help the genre economically. Money is a voting system for bands and the bands that get more money will live longer and disband less. (Look at how often bands disband.) Also don't think people should criticize a band for disbanding conditionally if they can't get a minimum number of people to a live. Yes it sucks. Yes the economy is bad for all. Yes Japanese cds are expensive and it's difficult to go see bands perform but I also think it's bullshit to refer to conditional disbandment as a trend or blackmail. Being in a band is a job for these people and they need the money to keep the band going and if they can't afford to buy outfits and make up and equipment and rent live houses for a night then they aren't going to be able to keep being a band. Everything costs money and being a greedy spoiled gaijin getting shit for free and bitching about the state of the scene (that you aren't even a part of locally in the country of Japan) is just redundant.
    Which leads to:

UNPOPULAR OPINION DOS: THE VISUAL KEI SCENE FOR PEOPLE NOT IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF JAPAN IS THE INTERNET AND THE RANDOM TOURS. VK scene for us is THE INTERNET. With out we'd be screwed. The only way you can bitch about the scene is if you've been to concerts in Japan and have experienced what the scene is like in it's native home land. Here in America the scene is American's laughing at Dir en Grey because they went to see Korn and Deftones and don't understand how the band got on stage or the random acts at lame ass anime conventions. Maybe if us foreigners support the bands then we'd have better lives and more incentive for bands to tour this country more. So if you really love save up your pennies to buy cds and dvds. I can't tell you how many Girugamesh, Dir en Grey, LM.C, etc CDs and DVDs onsale at American CD shops for 3-6 bucks a CD and 10 for a DVD. Which just proves how much isn't being bought.

UNPOPULAR OPINION SURII: Don't request high level rips if you rip your own shit in low quality bullshit.

Unpopular opinion FOAA: Tacky bands that recycle boring sounds and don't keep it fresh (The GazettE being the first to jump to mind,) aren't trying hard enough and need to step it the fuck up before I track them down and throw excrement in their faces. Blending slipknot riffs with luna sea sounds isn't innovative or interesting. It's lazy.

^ I agree to you, but then say that I can totally understand the people who dislike people like Justin Bieber. Yeah, hating on him with an obsessive passion, stating in every discussion, forum and under every youtube video that he sucks is really shitty and stupid behaviour. But I can totally understand everyone who is seeing him and any "artists" in his vein negatively. Why? Because this guy is a rude, attention seeking fuck who doesn't even give a single shit about his fans. He treats his own fans like trash or objects and yet expects every 11 old girl to love him unconditionally. He is marketed to be a nice guy, a dreamboy, which he isn't. You can transfer this basically to all popstars and groups created or supported by the industry.

Also I guess it's also the fear of adult people that young girls and boys are manipulated by musicians to become machines whose only purpose is to give the music industry more and more money. I don't know how much truth this actually holds... but if you look at some really rabid fans than I'd still start to worry. I believe this is one of the main reasons the Kpop fandom is so highly disliked, because some of their fans stick out as they are just batshit crazy.

But then, in my opinion, Visual kei isn't so different from Kpop. Vk guys too wear make up, are fashionable, well dressed and cute, beautiful boys. They might play different types of music, but a lot of vk music too is your standard pop music.

What annoys me the most about fans of any "oh so exotic because asian" music is, that they feel like the most unique, hip and anti-mainstream shit. And no, you are not cooler than the average Lady Gaga listener because you like Kpop. You are not more individual because you think "all western music sux" and you listen to oh so brutal Visual kei Metalcore. You are just really not having a better music taste in general just because you listen to any asian music.
There is really nothing more asshole-y than stupid music hipster pretending to be cool because "hey look, I like Bischual Keeeh. That msuic is so much more better and creative than all western muzic and the artists also look fucking sexey (omg hot azns) and not like ugly hairy europeans!! I am so cool, rite?"

I have another unpopular opinion. Expect rant.

Mainstream music marketed towards pubescent girls isn't any worse than other music you don't like.

There is a whole culture (especially on the internet, but also in other media and in real life) devoted to and putting lots of time and appearently research into hating on anything made for female teenagers and it highly irritates me.
I mean solo artists like Justin Bieber or boygroups like One Direction and even certain visual kei bands. Movies like twilight and many Boys love manga belong into the same category and also get the same treatment!
Things that work because 13 year old girl's romantic and/or sexual fantasies about 'pretty boys', essentially.

There is no other demographic which is nearly as bashed as them. Not even a tiny bit.

As I'm no 13 year old girl I find no appeal in those things either but I don't have the need to judge it's fans at all. Because of my different enviroment I never get in touch with their music taste, except for people bitching about it. I don't get this: if you don't like it, don't spend time on it. Like you do with every other genre that isn't made for you but doesn't threaten you either.

I'm also not interested in things marketed towards 60+ ladys or 4 year old boys and still don't think I should spend my day with hating on it and the people who enjoy it. It's also not a common thing to do. So why do it with teenage girls?

Teenage girls freak out and scream and throw their underwear (?) during some boyband concert where it doesn't bother anyone because only other teenage girls are present?  -People declare the girls hysteric and out of their mind and the band horrible.
Grown men freak out and scream and throw beerbottles after some sports event in public where outsiders will be bothered?-
People are like 'boys will be boys' and still take the sport very serious.

I'd even go as far as to say that when some artist has many young girls as fans it kind of devalues his work to many. This is sad!
Young girls aren't all stupid. Actually many are already more mature and educated then their male counterparts.

Maybe it's because of our cultures sick obsession with young girls sexuality and that it's frightening for us to see them directing it at something we don't like...?

Either way. I just don't get this.
