I go with bands I like, and look up their live sets and see who else they've played with, then I check them out. I also just pick random bands I've read about and try them out.

I'm super vain and pick usually based on how they look. The kind of music I like generally has a tangible aesthetic to it, so I usually know what I'm in for before I try them.

Other times I just try sample vids in the news section and am often introduced to things that I normally wouldn't have tried on my own.

Last method is that I try bands related to bandmen of groups I already like. It's surprising at how different some people's careers are in 10 years

For new bands, I note down the names/twitters/OHP of bands I want to keep an eye on in a text file so I can check back later. Like what Jig said, usually the initial look is enough to give you a vague sense of what they /might/ sound like (there are exceptions ofc). As for existing/disbanded bands, it's more of a case of looking up past bands of members still in the scene, stumbling on random videos/mp3s, talking to the right people, and a lot of luck + patience.

I started listening  to japanese music in order to improve my language skill. Even though I'm currently studying Japanese at university, I still find difficult to translate song lyrics, but at the same time I feel guilty for listening to certain songs without having a clue about the meaning. I feel like I can fully appreciate artists' effort. Regarding screamers, in my experience at a certain point you can understand what they are saying - at least, some lines - but, yeah, maybe you are right saying that in this genre you are more focus on other things that on the song content. As far as I'm concerned, I must admit that, while I'm listening to Japanese music, I'm usually more focused on the sound and the visual than on the meaning.

I think most of us, who have been listening to Japanese music for a while should understand some phrases.

I agree, with bands that focus more on screams, growls and other hellish noises lyrics are hardly relevant. But calmer bands such as Merry, or MUCC, or 12012,  for example, put a lot more emphasis on the lyrics in varying levels of depth. Unfortunately most of us do have to rely on the translator to get the gist of what the song is about, and even then it can be hard to understand/lose somewhat from the original meaning. But I think there's still room for interpretation.  I wish so many wouldn't just follow the herd.

I find it depends on the kind of heavy/brutal. You can have heavy/brutal without screaming, in which you can make out the lyrics. To some people, it might matter if the lyrics are in a language they can't understand, because if they could understand the language, they could make out the lyrics. But I personally find that when you don't know what they're saying, you can focus on other important parts of the song, because there is so much more to making music than just lyrics.
Then there are the screamers. Regardless of language, you can't understand what they're saying. You'll need to search up the lyrics if you're curious, unless you're a master at understanding screams. I'll admit it's hard to stay immersed in the lyrics while listening to that kind of music, though. That's just how it is.
